So, Mavericks manager Jim Horner stepped down on Friday to pursue a job at Texas Tech. This is odd because he had the best managerial record in Mavericks history and was the league’s Manager of the Year last season. Also because I remember his playing days. Oh well, I can always be weirded out by Eddie Menchaca leading Pulaski, and Andrew Lorraine serving as their pitching coach, and Rich Dorman being the PC in Everett. Also, Pineda made the Hot Sheet. He himself is hot... oh wait, I can't do that here can I?

Tacoma 3, Fresno 9 (SF + 13)
RHP Ian Snell (5.80, L) was left in for five and two-thirds innings, which was long enough to give up nine runs on twelve hits (2 HR!) and three walks against four Ks. I’d be surprised except that I’m not. LHP Edward Paredes (6.14) struck out a pair in the next inning and a third and then RHP Mumba Rivera (3.00) pitched the ninth without incident.
3B Matt Tuiasosopo (R, .252) had three walks in the game. That was another positive thing that happened. 2B Dustin Ackley (3B, R, .296) had two hits and a walk too and that’s exciting. C Adam Moore (2B, .315) doubled and SS Chris Woodward (.234) and CF Gregory halman (RBI, .259) both had a hit and a walk. Halman has thirty walks now. That’s one more than he had all of last season in West Tenn, though he also had two in Peoria. He’s two away from tying his single season high. I think he’s going to do it.

West Tenn 4, Tennessee 5 (CHC + 6)
This could be going better. The results were bad for LHP Mauricio Robles (4.24, L), though the pitching was not really. He gave up five runs (four earned), sure, but it was on eight hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against nine Ks in seven innings. RHP Dan Cortes (5.63), who can really pitch in relief, struck out a pair in the eighth.
2B Matt Lawson (RBI, SB, .426) had three more hits out of the leadoff spot. He’s just really excited to be here. CF Leury Bonilla (R, PO, .253) had a hit and two walks in the game, 1B Nate Tenbrink (2B, R, RBI, .271) had two hits, and DH Johan Limonta (R, .298) and 3B Alex Liddi (3B, R, RBI, .274) both had a hit and a walk.

Rancho Cucamonga 7 (ANA + 5), High Desert 11
LHP Jonathan Hesketh (4.23, W) gave up six runs through the same number of innings (and a little more) after ten hits (2 HR!), four walks, and four Ks. The main consolation there is that the other guy was worse. Also they made Mike Trout go 0-for-5. That’s kind of amazing. RHP Blake Nation (4.90, W) had two hits, a wild pitch, and two Ks in the next two frames. RHP Wes Littleton (3.86) had a few too many runs to work with to save it and ended up allowing a run to score on two hits and a walk in the ninth.
Offense! 3B-1B Rich Poythress (2B, HR, 4 R, 3 RBI, .301) had the best night, I think, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. His OPS for July is over 1.100 I think. 2B Kyle Seager (2B, RBI, .342) had another three hits in the leadoff spot and batting ahead of Poythress, DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2 R, RBI, .346) had two hits and a walk. RF Johermyn Chavez (2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, .311) and C Ralph Henriquez (CS, .297) had two hits apiece and LF Kuo-hui Lo (2B, 2 RBI, .258) doubled. Chavez has twenty-six home runs now, and Poythress, twenty-two.

Cedar Rapids 4 (ANA + 8), Clinton 10
Yes, I think I prefer this. LHP Nick Czyz (3.95, E, W) gave up a pair of runs (one earned) after four hits, a wild pitch, and five Ks in the six innings he worked. RHP John Housey (4.35) let two more plate on a hit, two walks, and a K in the following inning and a third, and then RHP Jorden Merry (6.14) walked one, threw a wild pitch, and struck out one in the final two outs of the eighth, scoring both of housey’s runs in the process. RHP Forrest Snow (3.00) had a hit and two Ks in the ninth.
SS Nick Franklin (2B, 2 R, .287) had three hits in the game and RF James Jones (R, .247) also reached three times with a hit and two walks. 2B Luis Nunez (R, 2 RBI, SB, .286), 1B Vinnie Catricala (R, .269), C Blake Ochoa (2B, R, 3 RBI, PB, .308), 3B Mario Martinez (R, RBI, .251), and CF Daniel Carroll (2B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .271) all reached twice, most of them with two hits, but Catricala had two walks and Carroll had a hit and a walk.

Everett 3, Tri-City 0 (COL + 1) (fourteen innings)
LHP Edlando Seco (2.52, PO) had what seems to be a pretty typical outing for him, in that he went six innings, allowed two hits, and had four each of walks and Ks. RHP Willy Kesler (2.05) walked two and struck out three in the next two and a third innings. RHP Stephen Pryor (0.49) turned int two and two-thirds perfect innings after that, ringing up four along the way. This brought on RHP Ogui Diaz (8.10, W), not the likeliest hero, but hero he was as he pitched three perfect innings while striking out two. So everyone in the lineup struck out at least twice, most of the lineup three times, Rivers four, and we still won in spite of twenty-four Ks. In the fourteenth, 2B Terry Serrano (R, 1-4, 2 BB, .290) walked, Anston singled, and after a wild pitch moved up both runners, 3B Kevin Mailloux (3B, R, 2 RBI, 2-6, .262) tripled them in and scored on a throwing error. That’s about all you need to know.

Kingsport 6 (NYM - 2), Pulaski 4 (ten innings)
The M’s can’t seem to win consistently against bad teams. RHP George Mieses (2.79) did okay, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits, a walk, a wild pitch, a balk, and three Ks. That’s a lot of balls in play. RHP Bryan Leigh (1.35) let another run score on two hits, a balk, and a couple of Ks in the final two innings. RHP Matt Bischoff (2.18, L) ended up with his first pro loss as he scored two runs on two hits, a free pass and a pair of Ks in the tenth.
3B Jorge Agudelo (2B, RBI, CS, .298) was the one batter with three hits in the game, but a bunch of others had two, including DH Andrew Giobbi (HR, .294), who hit his first pro home run, C Hassiel Jimenez (2 2B, R, PB, .263), and LF Derek Poppert (RBI, SB, .233). SS Jake Schlander (2B, .297) doubled and 2B Jetsy Extrano (SB, R, .247) had a single and a walk. I think that fifteen Ks by the M’s in the game was probably an issue.

Peoria Mariners 0, AZL Giants 2
LHP Cesar Jimenez (0.00) pitched the first inning and struck out one. This was a name I didn’t really expect to ever see again. Fortunately, the Paniagua who took the mound for the Giants was not Jose or I might have lost it. RHP Eric Valdez (4.20, E, L) took a loss he didn’t deserve, his one run being unearned and coming on three hits and two walks against nine Ks in five innings of work. Similarly, RHP Steve Landazuri (0.00) debuted with an unearned run scoring against him on two hits and a walk in the seventh. RHP Michael Aviles (9.49) gave up a hit and struck out a pair in the eighth.
3B Jose Martinez (2 E, .145), in spite of two errors, is the only one I have to talk about because he had a hit and two walks and no one else really did much of anything.

VSL Phillies 2, Aguirre Mariners 3
RHP Angel Aga (2.96) had a weird looking eight-inning stint where a run scored on ten hits and three Ks. By contrast, LHP Oscar Bravo (2.45, S) gave up a run in one inning on two hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk.
DH Miguel Brito (R, RBI, .289) and 3B Yidid Batista (RBI, .252) both had a couple of hits and 1B Ivan Ramirez (2B, R, .343) and C Ricardo Gonzalez (2B, R, .153) both doubled.

The DSL isn’t reporting the Mariners game. I don’t know what’s up with that. I may just end up having to write about two on Saturday.

Game Recaps (7/29/10)

Friday, 30 July 2010 13:27
Tacoma 4, Fresno 6 (SF + 12)
RHP Andy Baldwin (5.22, L) took the loss after he let five runs score on seven hits (HR), a plunked batter, five walks, and three Ks in five innings. That may be the most he’s walked in a single outing this year. RHP Sean White (0.00) let an unearned run score on a hit, a wild pitch, walk, and two Ks in two frames, and scored one of Baldwin’s runs. RHP Scott Paterson (2.41) then struck out one in the ninth.
There were two hits apiece from SS Chris Woodward (HR, 3 RBI, .233), CF Gregory Halman (R, .258), and RF Mike Wilson (2 R, .295), that home run being Woodward’s sixth. DH Mike Sweeney (RBI, .303) was 1-for-2 with a walk in his stint. 2B Dustin Ackley (CS, E, .275) had two walks at the plate, but on the field, things were a little rough.

West Tenn 3, Tennessee 9 (CHC + 5)
RHP Steve Bray (4.21, L) gave up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits (2 HR!), three walks, and a K. I liked him better last year. RHP Aaron Jensen (4.22) pitched the next two and a third innings and let a run score on three hits and a strikeout. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (3.30) allowed a hit and struck out a pair in the ninth.
1B Johan Limonta (2B, 2 RBI, .298) had three hits in the game. Perhaps he has entered oe of his good phases. 2B Matt Lawson (2B, 2 R, .405) had two more hits. He is hitting a lot these days!

Inland Empire 6 (LA - 2), High Desert 12
RHP Maikel Cleto (5.73) pitched three innings and let four runs score on eight hits (HR), three walks, and five Ks. So that was bad, and could have been worse. RHP Cheyne Hann (6.66, W) gave up a hit in the next two innings and got the win. The downside of that is that he has The ERA of the Beast. RHP Jake Wild (5.81) gave up two solo home runs and struck out three in the next inning and two-thirds and still got a hold because BASEBALL! LHP Brian Moran (1.88) then allowed a hit and struck out four in two and a third innings. He seems to have adjusted to the league/climate.
1B Dennis Raben (2B, HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, .358) had four hits in the game, which is pretty cool. It would be cooler if any of those came against a left-hander, hold on let me check… Hey, what do you know, the double did! Well done, sir. LF Jake Shaffer (2B, 4 RBI, .331) had three hits in the game, and 3B (yes, 3B) Rich Poythress (R, RBI, .298) also reached three times with a hit and two walks for him, while DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve (R, .342) just walked three times. That covers your three through six hitters, ladies and gents. Moving outside of that, leadoff and nine 2B Kyle Seager (HR, 2 RBI, .339) and RF Maximo Mendez (3 R, SB, .219) both had a hit and a walk. Seager now has nine home runs for the season. SS Edilio Colina (2B, 2 R, .289) added a double.

Cedar Rapids 2 (ANA + 9), Clinton 1
LHP Jimmy Gillheeney (2.83, PO, L) had a pretty good start with a bad result, as he let two runs score on six hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against five Ks and ended up with the loss. RHP Daniel Cooper (4.44, PO) had two hits and two Ks in the final two innings. Both pitchers had a pickoff? That’s certainly weird.
C Henry Contreras (2B, .395) had a double and two walks. He’s the only one I’ll be mentioning.

Everett 2, Tri-City 5 (COL + 2)
RHP Chris Sorce (4.30, L) gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits (HR), a couple of wild pitches, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks through five and a third innings to get the loss. RHP Fray Martinez (1.42) let two unearned runs score on two hits, a hit batter, a walk, and three strikeouts while going the rest of the distance.
RF Kevin Rivers (2B, .348) and DH Ryan Royster (2B, R, .280) both had two hits, and 3B Kevin Mailloux (2B, R, CS, E, .259) and 1B Evan Sharpley (2B, .255) both had doubles. Doubles all around, but only if you bat third through sixth.

Kingsport 3 (NYM - 3), Pulaski 11
RHP Jesse Nava (5.67, E, W) gave up three runs on nine hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against one K in five innings. He still won. LHP Michael Vitale (2.00) rung up four through the next three innings and then RHP Lance Abbott (3.38) allowed a hit and struck out one in the ninth.
LF Jose Rivero (2B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .354) again led the offense with three hits and a walk. SS Jetsy Extrano (2B, 3 R, RBI, .247) also reached four times with two hits and two walks. After that, you have to go down to the nine hitter to get three times reached, that being 2B Derek Poppert (2 R, 2 SB, .221) who had a hit and two walks. C Larry Gonzalez (RBI, CS, .286) had two hits and DH Jorge Agudelo (R, RBI, .286) and 1B Matt Browning (.267) both had a hit and a walk.

There was rain in Arizona again. This is as strange as anything.

Aguirre Mariners 3, VSL Tigers 2 (seven innings)
We swept the DH. Swish. RHP Maikel Ynfantes (3.97, W) pitched six and a third innings and gave up two runs on nine hits and two Ks. I imagine that could have gone differently. RHP Maikol Guaipe (3.16, S) struck out one in the final two-thirds.
C Franklin Diaz (R, SB, .258) collected two singles and SS Roberto Velasquez (RBI, .279) had a hit and a walk.

Aguirre Mariners 1, VSL Tigers 0 (seven innings)
RHP Reynaldo Sabala (2.84, W) allowed four hits and a walk and struck out five in six innings of work. RHP Daniel Mata (5.77, S) had a hit, a walk, and a K in the final inning.
The offense featured two hits apiece from LF Jesus Ugueto (2 2B, RBI, SB, .318) and SS Roberto Velasquez (2B, R, .284) and two walks by DH Felipe Burin (.342). Ugueto also walked once.

Yamasa Mariners 8, DSL Brewers 4
RHP Oliver Garcia (2.53) gave up a run through two innings on three hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against two Ks. I don’t know what that was all about, but RHP Ambioris Hidalgo (3.86, W) followed, allowing a run to score on four hits, two walk, and four Ks. RHP Joan Vizcaino (3.64) let a couple of runs score on three hits and two Ks in the ninth. He hadn’t pitched in two weeks.
3B Jordy Lara (HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, E, .182) had the best day of anyone, going 3-for-4 with a walk.2B Luis Matias (2 R, .227) might be close behind, with a hit and three walks. It was a good day for walks, with fourteen walks in all, two each to LF-RF Janelfry Zorilla (.267), DH Axel Wel (RBI, .169), C Miguel Sanchez (2 RBI, .149), and CF Randy Perez (R, SB, .250), who also had a single. RF Efrain Nunez (3B, SB, .167) added two hits.

Game Recaps (7/28/10)
Written by Jay Yencich
Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:17
Tacoma 1, Fresno 2 (SF + 11) (ten innings)
RHP Michael Pineda (3.38), again held to about 85 pitches, went six innings and gave up a run on four hits (HR), a hit batter, a walk, and four Ks. Let’s see… one of the top teams in the league, hot day, 10/3 ground fly, favorable park for offense… It’s not sexy, but I’ll take it. RHP Anthony Varvaro (1.86) pitched the next three innings, allowing a hit and a couple of walks while striking out three. RHP Levale Speigner (5.08, L) again was troubled by hits and a lack of defensive backing, giving up an unearned run on three hits without recording an out. Thus ended the game.
Offense included CF Gregory Halman (R, SB, .255) collecting two hits (no one had an extra-base knock) and 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (.259) getting a hit and a walk. Sweendog was also in the lineup, going 1-for-4 before being replaced after hitting his at-bat quota, one would suppose. Carp had an outfield assist. Yep.

West Tenn 8, Tennessee 5 (CHC + 4)
RHP Blake Beavan (5.00, PO, W) gave up five runs (four earned) through seven innings after seven hits and a hit batter while striking out five. Pass? RHP Luis Munoz (4.15), back in town, struck out one in the next inning before giving way to RHP Josh Lueke (0.00, S), who gave up a hit and rung up two in the ninth.
2B Matt Lawson (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .395) returned to the scene in a big way, going 4-for-5 after a few nights sitting on the bench. 1B Johan Limonta (RBI, .292) had two singles and a walk. DH Carlos Peguero (HR, 2 RBI, .265) hit his eighteenth home run and struck out his other three times up.

Inland Empire 7 (LA - 1), High Desert 5
LHP Anthony Vasquez (3.07) allowed four runs (three earned) to score after seven hits, a hit batter, and three walks against three Ks in six frames of work. RHP Blake Nation (5.06) allowed a hit and a walk in an inning and a third and LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.06) walked one while wrapping up the eighth. RHP Stephen Penney (3.38, BS, L) then let three runs score on three hits (HR) and a hit batter in the ninth. Whoops.
CF Denny Almonte (HR, A, .264) and 3B Shaver Hansen (HR, 2 RBI, SB, .220) both hit home runs. An unlikely pairing, as one has eighteen and the other, three. C Ralph Henriquez (R, RBI, PB, .283) had two singles and 1B Rich Poythress (2B, R, .298) doubled. Seager's hit streak ended, so that kind of sucks.

Cedar Rapids 5 (ANA + 8), Clinton 3
RHP Taylor Stanton (4.05) gave up one run on five hits and a hit batter while striking out over six innings, which was his best start in months. RHP Forrest Snow (4.50) then gave up a run on a solo shot in two innings and rung up five. These were both for naught. RHP Brandon Josselyn (3.43, BS, L) let three runs score on four hits in a third of an inning before LHP Jose Jimenez (2.54) had to be called in for the final two outs.
CF Daniel Carroll (3B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .275) had two extra-base knocks of the long distance variety. LF Kalian Sams (CS, A, .184) just had two singles. Sams’ isolated slugging is a hundred and fifty points lower in the second half than it was in the first. DH Tim Morris (2B, RBI, .304), 3B Mario Martinez (2B, .252), and 2B Gabriel Noriega (2B, R, E, .215) all had doubles.

Everett 0, Tri-City 7 (COL)
RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (3.68) had just a hit, a wild pitch, and a hit batter in five innings while striking out six. Which means he didn’t get the loss. RHP Eric Thomas (5.03, E, L) did after letting all seven runs (two earned) score on five hits, a couple of hit batters, two walks, and two Ks in two and two-thirds innings. RHP Ogui Diaz (9.88) hit one before striking out the final batter. Four hit batters is going to be just amazing for the relations between the two teams.
RF Kevin Rivers (.344) had a hit and two walks. I think this might be a little late, but FREE KEVIN RIVERS. CF Robbie Anston (CS, .290) had two singles and a walk and LF Ryan Royster (2B, .269) and C Steve Baron (2B, .217) both doubled.

Pulaski 4, Bluefield 5 (BAL - 12)
It could have been worse but this is still dumb. RHP Nolan Diaz (7.88) gave up four runs on four hits (HR), a balk, a hit batter, and two walks against two Ks in three and two-thirds innings. RHP Tim Griffin (6.35) walked one and struck out six in the next three and a third innings. Perhaps a move to the rotation is imminent. Nah, he’s too inconsistent. RHP Preston Vancil (6.75) gave up a run on a hit in the ninth. It was triple. Mark that down on your scorecards.
3B Ramon Morla (R, .299) had two hits that didn’t leave the park and a walk. CF Mario Yepez (R, RBI, SB, .201), SS Jake Schlander (R, .302), LF Jose Rivero (.333), and 1B Matt Browning (.245) all had a hit and a walk and DH Ethan Paquette (2B, CS, .231) doubled and was caught stealing home. This could have made the difference between it being a shutout and not.

Yamasa Mariners 0, DSL Athletics 1 (seven innings)
Doubleheader. RHP Domingo Brazoban (4.19, L) took the loss, though the outing itself was not bad, as he went five frames and allowed one run to score on three hits, a wild pitch, a balk, a hit batter, a walk, and four Ks. RHP Noel de la Cruz (4.22) had an uneventful sixth.
RF Janelfry Zorilla (2B, SB, .273) and C Miguel Sanchez (.171) both had a couple of hits. The team was 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, which is not a good place to be.

Yamasa Mariners 4, DSL Athletics 2 (seven innings)
So game two was better. RHP Enrique Rosario (4.66) let two runs score after five hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against eight Ks in five and a third innings. LHP Leoncio Munoz (3.70) recorded the last two outs of the sixth before RHP Yunior de Jesus (1.65, S) came one for the seventh, when he struck out one. Munoz also scored one of Rosario’s runs, apparently.
2b-3B Jordy Lara (2B, .168), 3B-1B Rudy van Heydoorn (2B, .307), and SS Bertin Sanon (2B, R, 2 RBI, .193) all had doubles in the game, with van Heydoorn drawing a walk. The offense was quite a bit more efficient.

Game Recaps (7/27/10)
Written by Jay Yencich
Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:15
Abbreviated sweep?

Tacoma 9. Fresno 3 (SF + 10)
RHP Yusmeiro Petit (5.63, W) was given the spot and went five innings with it, allowing two runs to score after six hits, a walk, and three Ks. Will French be called up? Is other mischief afoot? Stay tuned! LHP Edward Paredes (7.50) gave up two hits and struck out one in the next two innings. RHP Mumba Rivera (3.38) turned in an uneventful eighth, and then RHP Scott Patterson (2.55) gave up a solo home run and struck out one in the ninth. Patterson has given up home runs in three of his last four outings.
I got word in the middle of the game that CF Gregory Halman (3B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .251) was having one of his outings. Not knowing exactly what was meant by this, I was quite pleased to discover it mean two extra-base hits. 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (R, 2 RBI, .257), LF Mike Carp (.264), C Adam Moore (R, PB, .328), and 2B Dustin Ackley (2 R, .289) all had two hits as well, with Tui and Carp adding walks. 1B Matt Mangini (HR, .307) hit his twelfth home run and SS Chris Woodward (2B, R, .234) added a double.

Inland Empire 5 (LA - 2), High Desert 6 (eleven innings)
RHP Andrew Carraway (5.23) started this one out and threw seven innings with a couple of runs scoring on six hits, a walk, and five Ks. Not bad at all. RHP Stephen Penney (2.87) then had two unearned runs score against him on two hits and two Ks, and RHP Wes Littleton (3.52) gave up another after three hits and a walk against one K in an inning and a third. LHP Brian Moran
So, runs right? 2B Kyle Seager (2 2B, 2 R, 2-5, BB, .343) doubled, then Colina bunted him over to third. RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, 2 RBI, 4-5, BB, .310) was walked, obviously, then Shaffer struck out with Chavez advancing and 1B Rich Poythress (2 2B, R, RBI, E, 4-6, .298) singled to drive in Seager and end it. DH Dennis Raben (2B, R, .353) also had two hits and a walk, and LF Kuo-hui Lo (2B, 2 RBI, .269) doubled. Seager has a thirty-two game hit streak now. This doesn’t really surprise me since he’s been batting .400 for a while now.

Pulaski 9, Bluefield 1 (BAL - 13)
This seems more reasonable. RHP Timothy Boyce (3.25, W) gave up three hits and two walks in six and two-thirds innings while striking out six. RHP Steve Kohlscheen (0.00) allowed two hits in the next inning anda third and then RHP Yao Wen Chang (14.29) allowed a home run in the ninth, ending the shutout, and struck out one.
CF Mario Yepez (2 RBI, .200) had three singles in the game, bringing him to the Mendoza line. LF Jose Rivero (2 R, .333), 2B Jorge Agudelo (2B, 3B, 2 R, .294), 1B Matt Browning (2B, 2 R, RBI, CS, .250), C Larry Gonzalez (2 RBI, .267), and SS Jake Schlander (2B, R, 3 RBI, E, .304) all had two hits, with Browning drawing a walk. RF Jabari Blash (2 R, .100) had the other two walks for the team. A little unexpected, but he’s also struck out five times thus far, soo….

The AZL game appears to have been suspended. I see the weather was calling for 99 and overcast, which is different, so perhaps it rained or something.

VSL Rays 0, Aguirre Mariners 5
LHP Cruz Pereira (3.03) pitched not quite enough for the victory, going four and a third innings and allowing two hits, a wild pitch, and five walks while striking out three. RHP Isliexel Gonzalez (3.63, W) then took over and did his part to earn the win, allowing a hit and a couple of walks in four innings while striking out six. RHP Maikol Guaipe (3.21) walked one in the last two-thirds.
The big hit, which is to say the only extra-base hit, was the third home run for RF Jesus Ugueto (HR, .312). 3B-1B Yidid Batista (2 RBI, SB, .252) had two hits and 2B Felipe Burin (2 R, .344) and 1B Ivan Ramirez (R, RBI, .351) both had a hit and a walk.

DSL Cardinals 0, Yamasa Mariners 1
The Mariners pitchers allowed five hits and walked six. The Cardinals pitcher, for he threw a complete game, had four hits and a walk, but one of those hits was a home run. Yep. LHP Wander Marte (6.75) had his command get away from him, walking five and balking in three innings of work as he struck out four. RHP Junior Nunez (0.71, W) then pitched four innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three. LHP Martin Abad (0.99) got one out and allowed two hits, and then RHP Yunior de Jesus (1.71, S) gave up two hits and struck out one in the final inning and two-thirds. I am so pleased that they are back to having Junior and Yunior pitch in the same games. So very pleased.
1B Rudy van Heydoorn (HR, CS, .304) had that home run as one of two hits. That was probably one that you could have guessed if you tried.

Game Recaps (7/26/10)
Written by Jay Yencich

Alex Liddi and Rich Poythress were hitters of the week.

Sacramento 4 (OAK + 11), Tacoma 5 (ten innings)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.92) gave up a run on seven hits and two walks against two Ks in five+ innings of work. Not a lot of Ks for him this season. RHP Yusmeiro Petit (5.91) gave up two runs on a hit and a walk while striking out one in the next inning and two-thirds, though RHP Sean White (0.00) would score both on two hits, a hit batter, and two Ks in the following inning and a third. RHP Levale Speigner (5.08, BS, W) gave up a solo home run along with another hit and two walks in two innings, but somehow got the win. Maybe he’s turning bad again?
Let’s talk about more positive things such as walk-off victories. Matt Mangini (2B, 2 R, 2-4, BB, .309) doubled and the moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on a single by Wilson. Awesome. 1B Brad Nelson (2B, HR, .291) had three hits, and like Mangini, RF David Winfree (2 2B, R, .333) also had two hits. SS Matt Tuiasosopo (HR, 2 RBI, .250) hit his fifth home run while leading off. There are a number of things that seem wrong about that statement. LF Mike Carp (2B, CS, .261) had a double and a walk. In sad news for Sweeney fans, he was held up limping after grounding into a double play and was replaced by Wilson at DH.

Birmingham 4 (CHW - 11), West Tenn 9
RHP Jarrett Grube (2.44) was not so good this time, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits (HR), two walks, and four Ks through five innings. The Barons’ bullpen just happened to be worse, as LHP Nick Hill (5.87, W) held their offense to a hit and two Ks while the Jaxx offense secured the lead, and RHP Dan Cortes (5.71), who allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one on the final two innings, didn’t even have a save opportunity.
C Brandon Bantz (2B, R, RBI, PB, .276) had three hits in the game as the #8 hitter, and the one through four of CF Brandon Haveman (RBI, .295), RF Nate Tenbrink (3 R, .270), 3B Alex Liddi (2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .277), and 1B Johan Limonta (R, RBI, .290) all had two, with Tenrbink adding a walk. DH Carlos Peguero (RBI, CS, .266) and 2B Leury Bonilla (2 R, RBI, .251) both had a hit and a walk.

Clinton 5, Lansing 9 (TOR + 4)
RHP Nolan Gallagher (4.18) gave up four runs on nine hits (HR), a walk, and four Ks in five and two-thirds innings. Not good? LHP Jose Jimenez (2.58) then gave up two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning, which is worse. RHP Daniel Cooper (4.63) walked one taking it through the seventh, and then RHP Jorden Merry (6.43) gave up three runs on two hits, a wild pitch, two walks, and three Ks in the eighth.
Nearly everyone in the lineup had a hit. 1B Vinnie Catricala (HR, 2 R, .277), C Henry Contrares (2B, R, RBI, .390), RF James Jones (2B, .247), and LF Matt Cerione (.230) all had two hits, with Contreras adding a walk, and 3B Mario Martinez (HR, 3 RBI, .251) hit a home run and a walk. Catricala and Martinez both had nine home runs.

Salem-Keizer 1 (SF - 4), Everett 4
LHP Anthony Fernandez (3.22, W) allowed a lone run to score on four hits and a walk against six Ks in six and two-thirds innings. It’s quite nice to see him get back on track. RHP Austin Hudson (2.61, S) pitched the final two and a third and allowed a hit while striking out two.
RF Kevin Rivers (SB, .341) walked three times. Things such as these have stopped fazing me as much. I just want to see him promoted. 3B Terry Serrano (R, SB, .300), DH Jimmy Jacquot (2B, 2 RBI, .234), 1B Evan Sharpley (HR, .262), and CF Dwight Britton (R, SB, .232) all had two hits, with Serrano and Jacquot adding walks. SS Anthony Phillips (2B, R, .244) doubled. LF Ryan Royster (.267) had two walks.

Pulaski 1, Bluefield 11 (BAL - 12)
And back to this? RHP Yovanny Olivero (6.63, L) gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against two Ks in five innings of work. This was not nearly as bad as LHP Bennett Whitmore (7.24), who surrendered seven runs (four earned) on seven hits, a walk, and four Ks in tow and two-thirds inning. But RHP Lance Abbott (3.72) let two of those score on a hit before recording the final K.
2B Jetsy Extrano (2B, R, 3 SB, .250) doubled and CF Jose Rivero (SB, A, .329) had a hit and a walk. There were six stolen bases in all by the M’s in this one. Since they really weren’t getting the hits strung together to score runs, I’d say this was a solid maneuver by manager Eddie Menchaca.

Peoria Mariners 3, AZL Dodgers 1
LHP Nate Reed (3.94, W, E) let a run score after four hits and a wild pitch in five innings, but hey, he struck out nine! RHP Jandy Sena (3.38, S) got a four-inning save, allowing two hits and striking out three. It may be time to add him to the collection of AZL stats at the end of the wrap.
3B Patrick Brady (R, .133) had three hits in the game, RF Robert Rodriguez (R, RBI, .231) and SS Carlos Ramirez (2B, RBI, CS, .284) both had two, and C Jose Hernandez (2B, R, RBI, .205) doubled. A lot of summer league representation there.

VSL Pirates 11, Aguirre Mariners 2
Pirates. Mariners. It sounds like an uneven matchup, and very often, it is. RHP Ricardo Pereira (3.75, 2 E, L) gave up six runs (five earned) after five hits (HR), three walks, and three Ks in five innings. RHP Rafael Carrera (8.64) let five more runs (four earned) score on five hits, a couple of wild pitches, two walks, and a K in the next three and a third innings, but RHP Jesus Pirela (14.85) scored one of those with a hit and a walk to wrap up the game.
2B Diego Mina (2B, R, .190), C Franklin Diaz (2B, R, RBI, .237), and CF-RF Alexy Palma (2B, .280) all had a double, with Palma adding a walk. In the cases of Mina and Diaz, they did it with only one at-bat. C Ivan Ramirez (.351) had two hits before Mina came on.

DSL Brewers 1, Yamasa Mariners 3 (seven innings)
Getting our games in post-storm… LHP Brandol Perez (0.35, W) pitched seven complete and gave up a run on four hits and four Ks. Strange that he should get the start, but whatever. It may have been the other Perez too, who knows.
SS Noe Berro (2B, RBI, .229) doubled. Yep.

Yamasa Mariners 6, DSL Brewers 4 (seven innings)
LHP Leonel Cortoreal (6.93) gave up four runs on three hits (2 HR!) and three walks in two and a third innings. RHP Gregorio Aquino (4.12, W) allowedgave up two hits and struck out four going the rest of the way.
There was more offense worth writing about in this one. 2B George Soto (2 RBI, .201) and 3B Rudy van Heydoorn (.294) both had two hits, RF Efrain Nunez (2 R, 2 SB, .160) and SS-2B Luis Matias (SB, .237) had two walks apiece, and DH Axel Wel (2 R, .180) had a single and a walk. There were seven stolen bases in the game, one of which was of home.

Game Recaps (7/25/10)
Written by Jay Yencich
Sunday, 25 July 2010 23:41
Sacramento 2 (OAK + 12), Tacoma 3
This is promising if we end up facing them in the playoffs. RHP Ian Snell (4.58) pitched six innings and gave up a run on four hits and four Ks. You can read that again if you like to see what’s missing. RHP Joe Nelson (6.75) gave up a walk and struck out three in the seventh, RHP Anthony Varvaro (2.70, BS) let a run score on a hit, a walk, and a K in the eighth, and RHP Scott Patterson (2.16, W) walked one and struck out one in the ninth.
That’s a walk-off, of course. RF David Winfree (2 R, 1-3, .327) and C Adam Moore (HR, 2 RBI, 4-4, .327) both singled, and after a strikeout (guess), LF Mike Wilson (1-3, BB, .294) walked and Ackley hit a sac fly with the bases loaded. DH Mike Carp (2B, .260) also had a hit and a walk.

Birmingham 4 (CHW - 10), West Tenn 1
There goes the six-game win streak. And the hit streak for Liddi. Anyway, RHP Steven Hensley (3.39, PO, L) gave up all four runs on seven hits, a wild pitch, and a hit batter against two KS in seven innings. RHP Steven Richard (6.97) had an uneventful eighth, and then RHP Josh Lueke (0.00) struck out two in the ninth again.
Two hits were had by 2B Scott Savastano (.309), 1B Nate Tenbrink (2B, R, .262), and CF Leury Bonilla (2B, .250). The rest of the lineup only reached twice, with two walks total.

High Desert 8, San Jose 3 (SF - 7)
RHP Kenn Kasparek (3.13, W) seems to be back to good, but somewhat baffling performances. It was eight innings this time, with three runs scoring on seven hits (HR) and a hit batter and only two strikeouts. RHP Jake Wild (5.72) walked one and struck out one on the ninth.
I was all prepared to get excited about the offense because San Jose is a legit pitcher’s park, except then I looked up the factors and saw that it’s favorable to right-handed home runs. I wish I didn’t have to know stuff. Well, anyways, 2B Kyle Seager (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .342) and RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .303) both had three hits and SS Edilio Colina (2B, 2 R, .297) and 1B Rich Poythress (2B, HR, .292) both had two hits. It is a hard park for left-handers to hit it out, so Seager is totally legit. DH Jake Shaffer (2B, RBI, .326) added a double and LF Kuo-hui Lo (SB, .286) had a single and a walk. Lo has cooled down since arriving in the league.

Clinton 3, Lansing 0 (TOR + 3)
RHP Erasmo Ramirez (2.67, W) made it look easy, throwing eight shutout innings and giving up five hits and a walk in that span while striking out three. RHP Brandon Josselyn (2.77, S) struck out a pair in the ninth for the save.
RF James Jones (2B, R, .244), SS Nick Franklin (2B, R, RBI, .286), and 3B Mario Martinez (2B, RBI, .250) all had doubles that were involved with driving in or scoring runs. 1B Vinnie Catricala (R, SB, .275) drew the team’s only two walks.

Salem-Keizer 5 (SF - 3), Everett 7
RHP Yoervis Medina (4.20, W) gave up five runs on eight hits, a hit batter, two walks, and six Ks in five innings, which falls somewhere between “meh” and “bleh”. RHP Forrest Snow (0.00) held it in place for three innings after that, with a hit, a hit batter, and a couple of Ks, then RHP Stephen Pryor (0.57, S) got the last three outs and a save.
RF Kevin Rivers (2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .344) reached all five times up, recording four hits and a walk. 2B Hawkins Gebbers (2B, R, .230), 3B Kevin Mailloux (2 2B, R, RBI, .268), LF Ryan Royster (3B, R, 2 RBI, .274), and C Steve Baron (2B, .222) all had two hits, with Mailloux drawing a walk. 1B Evan Sharpley (R, RBI, E, .254) had a single and a walk.

Pulaski 5, Bristol 1 (CHW - 7)
That’s more like it! RHP George Mieses (2.82, W) got his third win, pitching seven innings and let a run score on three hits, a plunked batter, and a walk while striking out five. RHP Matthew Bischoff (1.37, S) got the save with a two-inning stint where he allowed two hits and rung up four.
1B Matt Browning (2B, RBI, SB, .190) had a double and a couple of walks, and 2B Jorge Agudelo (2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 SB, PO, .295) also reached three times with two hits and a walk. That covers walks and basepaths for the evening. 3B Ramon Morla (2 RBI, .306) had two singles. Blash made his debut as well, going 1-for-4 with a couple of Ks and an assist.

AZL Brewers 8, Peoria Mariners 3
RHP Dylan Unsworth (3.38, L) gave up five runs on nine hits and six Ks in five innings. On the plus side, it’s 32.0 innings and Sharkie still hasn’t walked anyone. RHP Luke Taylor (7.94) let another three runs score on four hits (HR), a wild pitch, and two Ks in the next two innings. LHP Kody Kurowski (9.00) had a hit, a walk, and a K in the last two frames.
LF Michael Acevedo (RBI, .377) had two singles and SS Carlos Ramirez (2B, R, .273) and 1B Ji-man Choi (R, .429) both had a hit and a walk.

VSL Reds 7, Aguirre Mariners 8
RHP Ivan Julio (2.13, E) gave up five unearned runs through four innings after six hits, a couple of wild pitches, and two walks against a K. RHP Daniel Mata (5.94) then took over for three and two-thirds innings with a couple of runs scoring on four hits, a wild pitch, a couple of hit batters, a walk, and four Ks. LHP Oscar Bravo (1.98, W) ended up with the win after a hit, a walk, and a K in the last inning and a third.
Two runs in the eighth to get the win? Yeah, sure let’s do this. With one out, 2B-3B Ramon Coronel (2 R, .235) singled to right, and then DH Felipe Burin (R, RBI, 3-5, .347) singled to center, which got Coronel to third on an error. 1B-C Ivan Ramirez (2B, R, 2 RBI, E, 3-5, .346) singled to drive one in, and then an out later, Lampe drove in Burin on another single. CF Jesus Ugueto (R, .320) was the out to open that inning, though he had three hits just like Burin and Ramirez. Similarly, the out between Ivan and Lampe was 3B-1B Miguel Brito (2B, 2 R, .291), who had a double and a walk, and the final out was by RF Alexy Palma (R, 2 RBI, .279), who had a single and two walks. They all helped, just not in that inning.

Game Recaps (7/24/10)
Written by Jay Yencich
Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:38
Sacramento 4 (OAK + 13), Tacoma 6
Hey we won. RHP Andy Baldwin (5.00, W) actually had a very fine start, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out eight in six and a third innings. RHP Sean White (0.00) scored one of those and had two hits, a walk, and two Ks in an inning and two-thirds. For the ninth, RHP Levale Speigner (5.10) gave up two runs on four hits, a walk, and a K, but it didn’t really matter anyway.
SS Chris Woodward (2B, R, .237), 3B Matt Mangini (2B, 2 R, RBI, .306), and CF Gregory Halman (2B, RBI, SB, .255) all had two hits with Halman adding a walk? 1B Brad Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, .288) and RF Mike Wilson (.294) both had home runs, the tenth and fourteenth for them, respectively. DH Mike Sweeney (2B, R, RBI, .320) added a double and 2B Dustin Ackley (.289) had a single and a walk. The walk was intentional. I find this funny.

Birmingham 3 (CHW - 11), West Tenn 4
LHP Mauricio Robles (4.17) pitched five and a third innings, with a couple of runs(one earned) scoring on three hits, a walk, and five Ks. Hooray, he’s not hurt (98 pitches)! Double hooray, competent start. RHP Dan Cortes (5.86) gave up two hits and struck out three in the next inning and two-thirds and LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (3.36, W) allowed a final run to score on three hits and a strikeout in the final two innings.
So the HR/two-hit streak broke yesterday, and 1B Alex Liddi (2 HR, .277) redeems himself by going and hitting two home runs, one of which is the game-winner. From the 18th of July, Liddi has doubled his home run output for the season. Holy crap. I find this particular revelation capable of overshadowing RF Johan Limonta (HR, 2 R, .291) going 4-for-4 with his eleventh home run. But only a little.

High Desert 2, San Jose 3 (SF - 6)
Oh no. LHP Jonathan Hesketh (2.91, L) gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits (HR), three walks, and six Ks in six innings. Why, he doesn’t have a win since getting to the Cal League! RHP Cheyne Hann (6.94) gave up a solo home run along with one other hit and struck out one in the remaining two innings.
1B Rich Poythress (HR, .291) and RF Johermyn Chavez (RBI, .299) both had a hit and a walk, but Poythress had his twentieth home run! ROUND NUMBERS! DH Jake Shaffer (2B, R, .327) added a double.

Clinton 7, Lansing 12 (TOR + 4)
Nuts. Lugnuts. Ha. LHP Nick Czyz (4.34, L) left after four innings, having given up five runs on nine hits, a couple wild pitches, a walk, and a couple Ks. RHP Ryan Moorer (10.00) was quite a bit worse as he let six runs score on four hits, a hit batter, and a walk, but RHP Taylor Lewis (6.37) scored one of those and one of his own on two hits and a walk in the next inning. RHP Daniel Cooper (4.70) struck out the last two batters of the sixth, and then gave way to RHP Brandon Josselyn (2.84), who gave up a hit, and RHP Jorden Merry (4.85), who followed Joss and struck out one in the eighth.
C Blake Ochoa (2 HR, 7 RBI, .333) hit two home runs and drove in literally all of the Lumberkings’ runs , and one of those was a grand slam. Now do you see why I’m frustrated that he’s playing at this level? SS Nick Franklin (2B, .287) had a double and a walk and 3B Mario Martinez (2 R, .250) had two singles.

Salem-Keizer 0 (SF - 2), Everett 2
LHP Edlando Seco (2.97) had another one-hitter through five innings. In Seco terms, this also means three walks and six Ks. RHP Willy Kesler (2.29, W) allowed three hits and struck out five in the next three and a third innings for the win, and LHP Jason Markovitz (4.61, S) got the last two outs for the save.
C Jimmy Jacquot (HR, E, .232) had his third home run as one of two hits. Jimmy jacks! Actually now that I’ve heard that annoying broadcasters use the same term, I feel disinclined towards using it. RF Kevin Rivers (2B, .323) and SS Terry Serrano (R, E, .295) also had two hits

Pulaski 2, Bristol 6 (CHW - 6)
Didn’t see this coming. RHP Jesse Nava (5.71) gave up two runs on nine hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against five Ks in seven innings. That was all right at least. Then LHP Ryan Kiel (5.40) let four runs (three earned) score on three hits, a walk, and a K in the eighth. That was less cool.
C Larry Gonzalez (2B, R, E, .255) had a couple of hits in the game and DH Derek Poppert (2B, R, RBI, .228) doubled.

Peoria Mariners 5, AZL Royals 2
RHP Eric Valdez (6.30) let two runs score on three hits and three walks while striking out seven in five innings. Eh. RHP Jeroen de Haas (3.60, W) then allowed a hit and a walk while striking out four in three innings. That’s pretty cool. RHP Jarett Attard (4.15, S) allowed a hit in the ninth.
The difference in the game was the first career grand slam for LF-CF Guillermo Pimentel (HR, 4 RBI, .241). May we see many more? 3B-LF Michael Acevedo (2B, .367) also had a couple of hits.

VSL Cardinals 3, Aguirre Mariners 7
RHP Vicente Campos (3.67, W) had one of his good starts, going five innings and allowing two hits while striking out seven. You know what that means for next time? Catastrophe. RHP Maikol Guaipe (3.27) gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits, a plunked batter, and a walk in the next inning and a third, and then RHP Isliexel Gonzalez (3.98, S) had two hits and two Ks in the final two and two-thirds to notch his third save.
3B Felipe Burin (2B, 2 R, RBI, E, .338), 1B Ivan Ramirez (RBI, .339), and DH Miguel Brito (3B, 3 RBI, .290) all had two hits in the game, and C Franklin Diaz (2 R, E, .224) had two walks. LF Reginald Lampe (2B, RBI, .322) added a double.

DSL Brewers 4, Yamasa Mariners 0 (seven innings)
Finally, some DSL baseball! Am I right? RHP Ambioris Hidalgo (4.19, L) gave up three runs on five hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against six Ks. Actually that was kind of weak for a three-inning stint. RHP Domingo Brazoban (5.02) let another run score on two hits and two Ks in the last four innings.
PH-DH Westlonder Marcelino (.278) walked in his only plate appearance.

Yamasa Mariners 7, DSL Brewers 6 (seven innings)
RHP Jochi Ogando (3.49) gave up a couple of unearned runs on a hit, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and three walks against three Ks in three innings. That wasn’t good. Nor was LHP Leoncio Munoz (3.80), as he let four plate on four hits and a walk in the fourth. Things calmed down from there and LHP Martin Abad (1.00, W) had a hit and a couple Ks through the next two frames and RHP Yunior de Jesus (1.82, S) had a hit, a wild pitch, and a K in the seventh.
C Ivan Brea (2B, R, 3 RBI, CS, .215) had two hits in the game, and was caught stealing home, 2B George Soto (.197) had a couple of walks, and LF Estarlyn Morales (2B, 2 R, RBI, .182) and SS Luis Matias (SB, E, .237) both had a hit and a walk.

Game Recaps (7/23/10)

Sacramento 2 (OAK + 14), Tacoma 1
I hope you listened to me about going to Tacoma because RHP Michael Pineda (3.71, L) closed out his five innings by striking out eleven in a row. He also gave up a run on a hit and a hit batter and that was enough to get him the loss because the offense was stupid. RHP Yusmeiro Petit (3.11) added another run on a hit, a walk, and two Ks in the next two innings and then LHP Edward Paredes (11.25) allowed two hits and a hit batter and struck out three in the last two.
LF Mike Carp (RBI, .259) had a single and a walk. Yep.

Birmingham 3 (CHW - 10), West Tenn 4
RHP Steve Bray (3.75) gave up three unearned runs on five hits, two walks, and four Ks through six and a third. RHP Aaron Jensen (4.24) scored two of those with a hit as he was wrapping up the seventh. Then LHP Nick Hill (6.43, W) got the win with a hit, a walk, and a K in the eighth and RHP Josh Lueke (0.00, S) allowed a hit and struck out the side in the ninth. That’s what he does.
1B Johan Limonta (2B, R, RBI, .283), LF Joe Dunigan (HR, 3 RBI, .205), and C Brandon Bantz (.200) all had two hits, with Bantz adding a walk. DH Carlos Peguero (2B, R, .269) added a double and a walk, which is pretty cool. Liddi unfortunately had his multi-hit and home run streak come to an end, but he singled at least.

High Desert 5, San Jose 3 (SF - 7)
Woot? LHP Maikel Cleto (5.43, PO, W) pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on nine hits (HR) and a wild pitch while striking out six. The opposing pitcher’s surname was Verdugo. I wish we had a Verdugo. RHP Wes Littleton (3.21, S) saved it with a hit, a walk, and two Ks in the ninth.
RF Johermyn Chavez (RBI, .299) had three hits in the game, but all were singles, so perhaps tis bst to look at 3B Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2B, 3 RBI, .370), who at least had a double as one of two hits. 2B Kyle Seager (R, CS, .339) and 1B Dennis Raben (2B, 2 R, RBI, .359) both had a hit and a walk.

Clinton 3, Great Lakes 6 (LA + 16) (seven innings)
So the DH was not so good. RHP Taylor Stanton (4.21, L), through five+ innings gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits, three of which left the park, along with two hit batters and a walk. No Ks. Bad news. RHP John Housey (4.10) had a hit and a K in the last two.
The upside was that RF James Jones (HR, .246) and 3B Mario Martinez (HR, 2 RBI, .245) both hit their eighth home run, and Jones drew a walk. DH Tim Morris (R, .311) had a couple of singles.

Clinton 2, Great Lakes 3 (+ 17) (seven innings)
LHP Jimmy Gilheeney (2.85, L) gave up three runs on seven hits, a couple walks, and four Ks. Not was I was hoping for, but eh. LHP Jose Jimenez (2.22) gave up a hit and struck out a pair in the sixth.
There was a home run in the second game too, going to CF Daniel Carroll (HR, A, .273). 2B Luis Nunez (R, CS, .301), DH Vinnie Catricala (.277), and 3B Mario Martinez (RBI, .246) all had a hit and a walk and LF Kalian Sams (3B, .183) had two hits, which is the first time I’ve mentioned him in some time.

Everett 4, Salem-Keizer 6 (SF - 1)
RHP Chris Sorce (4.42, L) gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits, five walks, and five Ks in three innings. Oops. RHP Jonathan Arias (3.25) let another run score on two hits, four walks, a wild pitch, and two Ks in the next four frames and then RHP Fray Martinez (1.65) blew away everyone he faced in the ninth on Ks.
CF Dwight Britton (R, .220), DH Ryan Royster (2B, R, .277), and 2B Terry Serrano (R, CS, .283) all had two hits in the game. C Steve Baron (2B, RBI, .208) and SS Anthony Phillips (2B, R, .241) both had doubles.

Pulaski 7, Bristol 4 (CHW - 7)
We won, though the pitching by RHP Nolan Diaz (7.68) was nothing special as he let four runs score on seven hits, four walks, and four Ks in five and two-thirds innings. RHP Preston Vancil (6.23, W) did get the win, with a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk against four Ks in two and a third innings, then RHP Bryan Leigh (0.79, S) walked one and struck out a pair in the last inning.
3B Ramon Morla (2B, HR, 2 R, SB, .312) LF James Wood (2B, R, 2 SB, .291), and SS Jake Schlander (2B, RBI, .298) all had three hits in the game, but Morla also walked. Tenth home run for Morla! Huzzah! 2B Jetsy Extrano (.265) had a couple of hits and 1B Matt Browning (2B, R, RBI, .188) doubled.

Aguirre Mariners 3, VSL Phillies 9
RHP Maikel Ynfantes (4.15) pitched two innings in the first game, which I think was the actual game they meant to play and not the completion. At any rate, he gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, a walk, and a K, seeping over into the third when RHP Reynaldo Sabala (3.29) scored two of his runs. Sabala had a couple of runs, one earned, score against him on four hits and a K in the last four innings.
So, offense. Two walks by CF Jesus Ugueto (.319), and a hit and a walk by DH Felipe Burin (RBI, .331) and RF Alexy Palma (2B, R, .279). There were also five errors and three double plays. What.

Aguirre Mariners 3, VSL Phillies 1 (seven innings)
The suspended game had RHP Ricardo Pereira (2.20) for two innings, with a hit and a wild pitch in that span. RHP Angel Raga (3.23, W) gave up a run on four hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and five Ks in the remaining five innings.
The opposing starter went six innings and had eight walks and eleven Ks. I can’t decide on what reaction I’m having to that. 3B Felipe Burin (.346) had three walks in the game. He is so good. C Ricardo Gonzalez (.171) and LF Jesus Ugueto (RBI, .333) both had two with Uggie adding a hit. 1B Ivan Ramirez (R, .316) and RF Reginald Lampe (.333) both had a hit and a walk.

The DSL shut down again. Freaking tropical depressions, I keep telling ya.

Game Recaps (7/22/10)
Written by Jay Yencich
Friday, 23 July 2010 01:20
Go to Tacoma Friday night. No questions, no excuses, just do it.

Tacoma 8, Las Vegas 4 (TOR - 5)
Pitching in Vegas can’t be much better than Reno. They need to go to Albuquerque and complete the trifecta. Anyway, LHP Luke French (2.94, PO, W) gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits, a walk, and four Ks in seven and a third innings. RHP Anthony Varvaro (1.59) then let a run score on three hits, a walk and a K before RHP Levale Speigner (4.79, S) was called in for the final out.
RF David Winfree (HR, 3 RBI, .337) had a 3-for-3 night and hit his sixth home run. A bunch of others reached twice, including SS Chris Woodward (.234), DH Brad Nelson (2B, R, .289), C Adam Moore (R, RBI, .311), CF Gregory Halman (2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, .253), and LF Mike Wilson (RBI, 2 SB, A, .295). Most of those were a hit and a walk, except Ackley and Wilson, who had two hits. 1B Matt Mangini (2B, .304) had a double.

Birmingham 1 (CHW - 9), West Tenn 4
RHP Blake Beavan (4.91, W) fared far better in his second start in the org, giving up a run on five hits (HR) and three Ks. RHP Luis Munoz (4.22) pitched the eighth and RHP Josh Lueke (0.00, S) struck out one in the ninth for the save.
CF Brandon Haveman (SB, .309) and 3B Alex Liddi (HR, 2 RBI, .275) both had two home runs, that being the tenth home run for Liddi. Liddi has home runs in four consecutive games. Mind: blown. As Liddi was hitting his dingers, so was LF Joe Dunigan (HR, 2 RBI, SB, .197), his fifth, to go with a walk. 2B Matt Lawson (.333) had a single and a walk.

High Desert 5, Modesto 1 (COL 0)
LHP Anthony Vasquez (2.96, PO, W) was back to normal, more or less, as he gave up a run on five hits and a walk while striking out six in six and a third innings. RHP Blake Nation (5.18) gave up a couple of hits and struck out one in an inning and a third, and LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.09, S) had a walk and a K over the course of four outs.
LF Jake Shaffer (HR, 3 RBI, .328) had the big hit, a three-run shot in the fourth. 1B Rich Poythress (2B, R, 2 RBI, .293) added two and RF Johermyn Chavez (R, .294) had a hit and a walk.

Thursday’s match-up of the Lumberkings and the Great Lakes Loons was postponed due to “unrelenting rain”.

Everett 5, Salem-Keizer 4 (SF - 2) (fourteen innings)
This game went on roughly as long as the Mariners one did. RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (5.59) gave up three runs on seven hits (HR), a wild pitch, two walks, and three Ks through four and two-thirds innings. He was followed by RHP Eric Thomas (4.88), who allowed a run to score on three hits, two walks, and four Ks. RHP Stephen Pryor ( 0.61) was also awesome, walking one and striking out four in the next inning and two-thirds. RHP Forrest Snow (0.00) was not a friend of the strike zone over the next three innings, allowing a hit, throwing a wild pitch, walking four and striking out one, but hey, no runs. RHP Ogui Diazz (10.13, W) had a hit and three Ks in the last two innings.
The fourteenth inning run scored when 3B Terry Serrano (3 R, 2-5, BB, .273) and SS Anthony Phillips (2 RBI, 2-5, .235) had back-to-back singles and, after a K, CF Robbie Anston (R, RBI, SB, 3-6, BB, .291) singled as well. It was all singles and all Ks in that inning. LF Dwight Britton (2B, R, .209) and RF Kevin Rivers (.325) both had two hits, with Rivers adding a walk.

Pulaski 1, Danville 4 (ATL + 2)
Unfortunate. RHP Timothy Boyce (4.29, L) got a second start and gave up four runs (one earned) on nine hits, a wild pitch, and two hit batters. LHP Michael Vitale (3.00) allowed one hit in the last four. In other news, the M’s got through eight innings of pitching without walking or striking out anyone. The Danville pitchers didn’t walk anyone either.
Offense? CF Mario Yepez (2B, R, .194) and SS Jetsy Extrano (2B, .254) both had doubles.

Peoria Mariners 6, AZL Brewers 11
RHP Seon Gi Kim (6.89) had trouble with the whole strike-throwing thing in this one as he let three runs (two earned) score on two hits, a wild pitch, and four walks against six Ks. Or maybe the strike zone was messed up. Heck if I know. Both managers were ejected though. LHP Matt Petiton (6.00, BS, L) let three runs score on two hits (HR), a walk, and a K in the sixth, and that, effectively, was that. RHP Danny Cruz Ayala (4.05) got to follow up with his worst outing of the year with five runs scoring on four hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, three walks, and a K in the last two innings. Lame.
I guess I can’t complain about the dearth of power anymore because 2B Michael Acevedo (2 2B, R, RBI, 2 SB, .356) had two doubles and two walks in the game. DH Danny Lopez (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .245) also hit his first pro home run and drew a pair of walks. 1B Jose Flores (2B, 2 RBI, .261) and RF Robert Rodriguez (2 R, RBI, .217) both had a couple of hits.

VSL Tigers 4, Aguirre Mariners 16
LHP Cruz Pereira (3.45, W) got a rare start and went five innings with it, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out a pair. RHP Jesus Pirela (16.50) then walked four and hit one in two-thirds of an inning, with four runs coming around to score against him, two under the watch of LHP Oscar Bravo (2.19), who allowed two hits and struck out three in two and a third innings. I hope he does well in the future because, hey, Bravo, but also we need some good pitcher from Managua in the system now that J.C. Ramirez is gone. RHP Rafael Carrera (7.20) allowed a hit in the ninth.
C Ivan Ramirez (2B, 2 R, 4 RBI, .339) had a 4-for-4 night. He’d better be in the States next year or I will be angry. Actually his OPS is pretty much the same as it was last year except he’s showing better plate discipline now. RF Alexy Palma (3 R, .275) and LF Reginald Lampe (2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, .325) also reached four times with three hits and a walk. Palma has two fewer walks than Ks. CF Jesus Ugueto (2 R< RBI, .319), 1B Miguel Brito (R, .283), and 2B-3B Yidid Batista (R, 3 RBI, CS, .244) all had two hits in the game. DH Felipe Burin (2 R, .331) had a single and a walk. I’ll be madder if he doesn’t get called up but hey everyone knows that.

The DSL was shut down. Tropical depressions and the like.

Game Recaps (7/21/10)
Written by Jay Yencich
Thursday, 22 July 2010 12:29
Tacoma 10, Las Vegas 5 (TOR - 4)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (5.25, PO, W) picked up his third win. That’s about as exciting as the start was, as he allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits (HR), a walk, and three Ks in six and a third innings. LHP Edward Paredes (22.50) let a run score on two hits and a K in the next inning. It seems like he’s taking a bit of time to adjust to the league. RHP Sean White (0.00) walked one in the final inning and two-thirds. White has a 4/6 K/BB in eight minor league innings thus far. Eep.
SS Chris Woodward (2B, 2 R, RBI, .233) had three hits leading off. Most of the other contributors had two, those being DH Mike Sweeney (2 R, 2 RBI, .413), 1B Brad Nelson (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, .289), LF Mike Carp (HR, 3 RBI, .258), 2B Dustin Ackley (R, .250), CF Gregory Halman (2B, R, .252), and RF David Winfree (2B, RBI, .320). Sweeney, Halman, and Winfree all drew walks too. Carp has six home runs this month which is a season high.

High Desert 7, Modesto 4 (COL + 1)
RHP Andrew Carraway (5.42, W) picked up another win, this time going six innings and allowing two runs to score on seven hits (HR) while striking out four. Another solid outing for him. LHP Brian Moran (2.70) allowed a hit and struck out three over the next two innings, but RHP Stephen Penney (2.91) gave up two runs on three hits, a hit batter, and two Ks in the ninth.
LF Jake Shaffer (2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, .329) was a single shy of cycling, which is cool. 2B Kyle Seager (R, .340) and 3B Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2B, RBI, .366) both had two hits, and DH Dennis Raben (HR, .363) and 1B Rich Poythress (HR, 2 RBI, .289) both had home runs. Poythress’ home run was against a left-handed pitcher and Raben’s was against a right-hander. Buzzkill!

Clinton 1, Great Lakes 3 (LA + 15)
RHP Nolan Gallagher (3.63, L) had a good start, just not good enough, as he gave up three runs on five hits (HR), a walk, and eight Ks through seven innings. That home run accounted for the difference in the game. RHP Jorden Merry (5.25) walked one and struck out one in the eighth.
1B Vinnie Catricala (2B, .279) had a double and two walks. That’s good. SS Nick Franklin (HR, .291) had one of his two hits leave the park. You can make an argument that this is better, especially considering that it came against the starter, who has only allowed three all season.

Everett 6, Salem-Keizer 11 (SF - 1)
LHP Anthony Fernandez (3.55, PO, L) gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, three walks, and three Ks in four and a third innings. Probably his worst outing in recent memory. LHP Jason Markovitz (4.85) gave up two runs on five hits and five Ks in the next two and a third innings and RHP Austin Hudson (2.95) gave up four unearned runs on two hits, two walks, and two Ks going the rest of the way. It was really just piling on at that point.
3B Terry Serrano (2B, 2 R, CS, .265) had three hits in the game, CF Robbie Anston (2B, RBI, SB, .279), 2B Hawkins Gebbers (2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI, SB, 2 E, .244) and 1B Evan Sharpley (3B, 2 RBI, PO, .257) all had two hits, with Gebbers and Sharpley adding walks, LF Kevin Rivers (2 R, .324) walked twice, and SS Anthony Phillips (SB, .224) and C Jimmy Jacquot (RBI, .215) both had a hit and a walk. Everyone in the lineup reached safely, so that’s something.

Pulaski 1, Danville 8 (ATL + 1)
Reversal! RHP Yovanny Olivero (6.82, PO, L) gave up three runs on ten hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and one lonesome K through five innings. The opposing pitcher had ten of something too: strikeouts, in seven innings. RHP Yao Wen Chang (14.81) gave up five runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, and a hit batter in the last three frames.
It’s reach offense night, as you might have expected, so DH Ethan Paquette (SB, .247) had a single and a stolen base. There were four other hits. No one walked.

AZL Royals 7, Peoria Mariners 1
LHP Nate Reed (4.33, L) ended up with his fourth loss, except this one might have actually been earned as he gave up four runs on eight hits (HR), a wild pitch, and two Ks through five innings. RHP Jandy Sena (4.30) pitched about the same, with three runs scoring on seven hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk against four Ks in the same number of innings.
RF Guillermo Pimentel (HR, .256) didn’t need much time to get his second home run, which is certainly a good sign. CF Alfredo Morales (3B, A, .235) added hit second triple, SS Carlos Ramirez (2B, .271) and C Ji-man Choi (2B, .432) both had doubles, with Choi adding a walk as he is wont to do, and LF Michael Acevedo (.333) had two singles. He’s not slugging yet, but Acevedo seems to have gotten the hang of this whole playing baseball in the States thing.

The DSL Mariners were rained out again. This may mean a horrible string of doubleheaders down the road. Or it may mean nothing at all.
