Colorado Springs 3 (COL 0), Tacoma 4
LHP Chris Seddon (3.38, E, W) started game four of the Rainiers schedule and did all right, giving up three runs through five and a third innings after six hits and three Ks. RHP Levale Speigner (0.00) came on next, with one runner on, and kept what would have been the tying run from scoring, allowing a hit and striking out one in two and two-thirds innings. RHP Chad Cordero (0.00, S) struck out one in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Most of the Rainiers in the lineup on Sunday ended up with at least a hit. 1B Mike Carp (R, RBI, .286) and C Josh Bard (.222) both had two singles, LF Ezequiel Carrera (R, SB, .267) and 3B Matt Mangini (.214) both had a hit and a walk, and RF Gregory Halman (3B, R, RBI, .077), DH Brad Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, .250), and 2B Travis Denker (2B, .143) supplied the power with a triple, a home run, and a double, respectively. The Rainiers did have a bit of a strikeout problem, though, as the team collectively K'd eleven times.
West Tenn 6, Jacksonville 0 (FLA - 2)
Picking up his first double-A start, LHP Mauricio Robles (0.00) pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up a hit, hitting a batter, and walking two while striking out five. He also recorded six grounders to one fly, so I'd say the only reason he wasn't the pitcher of record was due to a strict pitch count, where they pulled him at eight-two. It all sounds good, right? Well, here's the funny thing: the hit Robles allowed was the only hit by anyone in the Jacksonville lineup today, and even then it was just a measly single up the middle. Mike Stanton? Who cares. The D-Jaxx pitchers obviously didn't. RHP Josh Fields (0.00, W) somehow ended up pitching the next three and two-thirds innings, throwing fifty-two pitches in all, and did all right for himself, with just a walk, a wild pitch, and three Ks. RHP Anthony Varvaro (0.00) walked one in the ninth and then that was the end of it.
The D-Jaxx didn't have an extraordinary amount of offense either, though anything is pretty much more than what the Suns could muster. C Guillermo Quiroz (RBI, .538) and DH Mike Wilson (3 R, .338) both reached three times, Quiroz with three singles, Wilson with a single and two walks. SS Carlos Triunfel (.211) and RF Carlos Peguero (2B, 2 RBI, .467) both had two hits, Peguero with the only extra-base hit of the night, and 1B Johan Limonta (R, SB, .263) had a single and a walk, and even a somewhat rare stolen base. Ackley, however, has been scuffling out of the gate and is only 2-for-18 out of the leadoff spot. He'll come around, we all know, as I seem to remember him also starting out a little slow in the AFL this past winter.
High Desert 2, Lake Elsinore 3 (SD 0)
RHP Andrew Carraway (3.60) let two runs score on six hits and five Ks through five innings. That looks a bit worse than it actually was, though, as the Storm only had a single to their name through four innings, and then pounced on Carraway in the fifth. I'd suggest that he was beginning to tire by then, but it's kind of hard to imagine when the numbers seemed to have him rolling, because he couldn't have thrown that many pitches. RHP Cheyne Hann (0.00, E, L) ended up with the loss after allowing an unearned run to score on an error (his own) and a walk. Basically, there was a walk, then a bunt, a pop up in foul territory, then some kind of missed catch error where the batter reached and the runner scored from second. Your guess is as good as mine. You might call the game a kind of arms race too, not only for the fact that each team allowed just six hits total (the Mavs with that one, damning walk, the Storm with four), but because there were three plays at the plate, two for the Mavs defense and one for the Storm, which could have decided the game quite differently.
There wasn't much going on for the offense, though, as 3B Kyle Seager (R, .375) had two singles, 1B Rich Poythress (2B, 2 RBI, .250) and RF Scott Savastano (R, A, .200) both had a hit and a walk, and CF Maximo Mendez (R, SB, A, .200) walked twice.
Clinton 2, Wisconsin 8 (MIL + 2)
LHP Jonathan Hesketh (9.64, L) had a pretty awful '10 debut, giving up seven runs (five earned) on ten hits, a walk, and two Ks in four and two-thirds innings. The only positive was that he had eight grounders to one fly, but since some of the infielders were playing off their usual positions to start the year, that led to some mistakes. More on that later. RHP Daniel Cooper (0.00) scored one of those and let an unearned run of his own score on two hits, a walk, and a K. RHP Brandon Josselyn (0.00) would strike out one in the ninth.
So, regarding that defense, Noriega was playing short today and Franklin was playing second, and each made an error, but on top of that, the two guys at the corners, Martinez and Raben, also flubbed plays. The entire infield, outside of the catcher (who had a hit), contributed little (Raben had a walk) and only really made things worse, but the outfield and DH were just fine. From that group, LF Kalian Sams (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .400) had three hits in the game and RF James Jones (2B, R, .125) doubled.
