Where the previous game featured an outburst from both sides on the offense, this was instead quiet, hardly eventful. RHP David Pauley (3.27, L) pitched six innings and let two runs score after five hits, two walks, and six Ks, a nice, solid bit of pitching on the part of the right-hander, not really exceptional, but enough to keep the team in the game. Perhaps more interesting was how LHP Garrett Olson (0.00) struck out four over the next three innings, but again, he allowed three more hits, so it wasn't really complete dominance, just an above-average stint. I may be feeling a bit disenchanted at the moment. It was fairly similar to his previous outing, which is all right I think, the fewer walks, the better.
The offense, as you might be able to tell, wasn't up to much. DH Tommy Everidge (.353) reached twice with a hit and a walk, but he was the only one to do that or even draw a walk for that matter, and the only others worth noting were CF Gregory Halman (2B, .143) and RF Brad Nelson (2B, A, .250) for their doubles. We're still waiting on Halman to hit his first single. I find it interesting that he's morphed into a three-outcome hitter, even if it's skewed particularly to one of those outcomes.
High Desert 4, Inland Empire 3 (LA 0)
Second verse, same as the first. RHP Jake Wild (3.72, W) picked up his first win of the season, pitching five innings and allowing two runs to score on six hits, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks. I find the lack of strikeouts a bit distressing this time around, as most of the balls against him were hit into the air and San Bernardino is about the only place in the Cal League you can really get away with that. RHP Marwin Vega (4.50) gave up a run on two hits and a walk in the next inning, and then RHP Blake Nation (0.00) allowed one hit and one walk over the following two frames. RHP Stephen Penney (0.00, S) struck out one in the ninth to notch his first save.
There wasn't much power from the Mavericks offense in this one, but there was a nice blend of hits (10) and walks (6). RF Johermyn Chavez (R, .211) got on three times, with a single and two walks, and 2B Kyle Seager (R, .348), C Travis Scott (RBI, .286), 1B Rich Poythress (2B, .208), 3B Nate Tenbrink (R, .348), DH Scott Savastano (RBI, CS, .286), and LF Jake Shaffer (RBI, .278) all reached twice, everyone but Scott and Shaffer with a hit and a walk, where those two got in with a pair of singles. There were assorted other things that happened of some interest, like a two-run error and a questionable double play at home, but you can read about that here, if you want.
Clinton 4, Wisconsin 2 (MIL 0)
LHP James Gilheeney (5.19, PO, W) fared slightly better in his second outing than he did in his first, giving up two runs and lasting a full five innings, those runs scoring on four hits (HR), three walks, and three Ks. I'm a bit surprised to see him struggling this much with the walks early on, as command was supposedly one of his better suits. LHP Brian Moran (0.00) pitched the next three innings and struggled not at all with the extended work, allowing only a single (to a right-handed hitter at that) and striking out five, three of which came against right-handers. RHP Brandon Josselyn (0.00, S) struck out the side in the ninth.
The Lumberkings were a paltry 1-for-11 with men in scoring position in this one, so it's almost a wonder that they managed to score as much as they did. 1B Vinnie Catricala (2B, 2 R, .409) was one of the bigger contributors for the offense, logging three hits in the game. He was also playing first, like I originally thought he would before Raben came in to take over that job. Speaking of which, DH Dennis Raben (3B, RBI, .261) had a triple and a walk, as did SS Nick Franklin (3B, .280). Franklin, I can see with the triple, but Raben? With his legs? Regardless, neither of them scored, which was a recurring theme of the evening, as I said. Not to be overlooked at this point, LF Kalian Sams (2B, R, RBI, .409) added two hits and a walk.
