Sacramento 5 (OAK + 3), Tacoma 2
Blarg. Last time around, I was talking about how LHP Luke French (0.71, PO) was striking out guys, and even if he wasn't inducing many groundouts, that at least was good. This time, he pitched well enough, but the trend flipped, just one strikeout in six and two-thirds innings, and a 11/7 ground/fly. What. He also allowed a run to score on six hits and only needed eighty-eight pitches to get as far as he did. The Rainiers had the lead until RHP Levale Speigner (7.20, L) came in, which is the source of the earlier blarg as he let four runs score on six hits and two Ks in an inning and a third, which consequently means that the Rainiers risk getting swept tonight. RHP Chad Cordero (0.00) struck out one in the ninth, and that's something, I guess.
1B Mike Carp (2B, R, .269) had two hits and a walk in this one after starting out a bit slow to open the season. DH Ryan Langerhans (R, .000) added a couple of walks and 2B Chris Woodward (.250) had a single and a walk.
Mississippi 7 (ATL - 3), West Tenn 5
Ugh. So, RHP Dan Cortes (8.10), through five and a third innings, gave up five runs on eight hits, two walks, and six Ks. And if he hadn't pitched that one part of the sixth, he would have lost one K, but also three singles, and three runs, as LHP Edward Paredes (3.86) gave up a single, and then a triple to clear what was left on the bases. Those were his only two hits, and he managed to strike out three in an inning and two-thirds. I'm upset, but maybe more so at Cortes not getting the hook earlier. RHP Josh Fields (1.69) pitched two innings in this one and led one run score on two hits, a walk, and two Ks.
I want to find something positive in this one considering the last two games, so I'll highlight 3B Alex Liddi (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .292), who had two extra-base hits on the night. Liddi brought his bat with him to the Southern League and is presently slugging .625. He hasn't walked though, and has struck out in a quarter of his at-bats. (sigh) I'm doing it again... DH Mike Wilson (2B, 2 RBI, SB, .263) doubled, 2B Dustin Ackley (R, CS, .083) walked twice, and LF Joe Dunigan (RBI, SB, .176) had a single and a walk, and a stolen base in the ninth after drawing that walk, which was super gritty.
High Desert 1, Inland Empire 2 (LA + 1)
The Mavs couldn't quite make this one a sweep. RHP Kenn Kasparek (0.00) did his part, though, going five and a third innings and allowing three hits, two wild pitches, a hit batter, and two walks while striking out three. I've voiced this concern with other Mavericks pitchers, but being somewhat wild and giving up a majority of flyballs (with relatively few Ks) is not something that's going to fly in Adelanto, or more precisely, it will fly, but out of the park. LHP Travis Mortimore (2.45) struck out two over the next inning and two-thirds, which is good, I would say. RHP Cheyne Hann (1.42, BS) got into a spot of trouble over the next two frames, letting a run score on three hits and a walk, and then RHP Steven Richard (11.57, L) went further with that, his decisive run scoring on a hit, a wild pitch, and a K. First, there was the double, then the K, then someone reached on a fielding error, and the wild pitch scored the runner from third.
2B Kyle Seager (.357) had two hits leading off and RF Johermyn Chavez (.227) logged a hit and a walk.
Quad Cities 4 (STL + 5), Clinton 2
Coming off a pretty successful series against Wisconsin, the Lumberkings struggled a bit against division-leading Quad Cities. LHP Anthony Vasquez (1.69, PO, E, L) gave up two runs on four hits, two walks, and six Ks in five and two-thirds innings. LHP Jose Jimenez (1.93) pitched the two and a third innings and let an unearned run score after two hits, a walk, and two Ks. In the ninth, RHP Chris Kirkland (2.25) had another unearned run score against him on two hits. So the earned runs gave the River Bandits an early lead, but the unearned ones did Clinton in, which always sucks.
There were five errors total by the defense, two again by Baron, and I honestly don't know what's wrong with him right now. On the plus side, the outfield managed to throw two guys out. Getting to the offense, there were two more hits from SS Nick Franklin (RBI, .310), a single and a walk by CF Daniel Carroll (A, .192), and a double by 2B Gabriel Noriega (2B, R, E, .176).
