Sacramento 1 (OAK + 2), Tacoma 2
A win! One! Singular! RHP Steven Shell (4.00) pitched four innings and let a run score on four hits, a hit batter, three walks, and five Ks. Nice end results, but still, a little wild. RHP Steve Bray (2.57, W) rebounded from his last outing and allowed just a hit and a walk while striking out three in the same number of innings. RHP Mike Koplove (3.38) had a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and a K in two-thirds of an inning, and then RHP Chad Cordero (0.00, S) allowed a hit in the final inning and a third.
The Rainiers had four hits and a pair of walks. No one had an extra-base hit, no one reached twice. And yet they won. I'm baffled. The basic story of it is that, with one out in the fifth, Mangini walked, Woodward singled, and Carrera was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought up Halman, who grounded into what would have been a 6-4-3 double play, except on the relay, the second baseman threw the ball away, Halman was safe, and two runs scored. Deal with that knowledge however you can.
Mississippi 10 (ATL - 2), West Tenn 7
This start by LHP Nick Hill (15.88, L) wasn't quite as bad as the first, but he still gave up seven runs (four earned) on six hits, a hit batter, and four Ks in four+ innings. He was pulled at 70 pitches, but isn't injured, near as I can figure. RHP Wes Littleton (8.44) pitched the next two frames and gave the Braves their other three runs after five hits (HR) and a K. The pitching calmed down after that, as you can imagine. RHP Aaron Jensen (0.00) had a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks in the next inning and a third, RHP Mumba Rivera (5.06) had a K pitching through the eighth, and RHP Anthony Varvaro (0.00) allowed one hit and struck out the side in the ninth, which makes me smile.
The D-Jaxx hit five home runs on the night, which is awesome, but still lost, which is not. Special props go to RF Carlos Peguero (2 HR, 3 RBI, E, .385), who had two jacks. He's slugging .808 now and has struck out in less than a quarter of his at-bats. He could still stand to walk more, but DINGERS. 1B Johan Limonta (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .269), DH Mike Wilson (HR, .261), and LF Joe Dunigan (HR, A, .191) each had one, with Limonta adding a single. As to the non-home-run-hitting part of the lineup, 2B Dustin Ackley (.107) had a single and a walk and C Guillermo Quiroz (2B, PB, .348) had a double. Liddi struck out all four times at the plate, and made an error, which is unfortunate.
Lake Elsinore 6 (SD + 2), High Desert 5 (ten innings)
*sadface* RHP Maikel Cleto (2.08) only lasted three and two-thirds innings, letting three runs (one earned) score after six hits (HR), a hit batter, two walks, and two Ks. RHP Ryan Moorer (3.86) pitched the next two and a third innings and let a run score on two hits, a wild pitch, four walks, and one K, so that could have been several times worse than it was. Alas, the tying run came on a hit, a walk, and three Ks for RHP Blake Nation (1.50, BS) over the two frames he pitched, and that run wasn't even earned. RHP Stephen Penney (2.25, L) took the loss on a solo home run in the tenth, and also had three other hits and three Ks in two innings of work. I suspect the M's have more Stevens/Stephens than any other team in baseball. Someone look into this.
Playing in their home park for the first time this season, the Mavs took advantage, clubbing three home runs total, one each for 2B Kyle Seager (HR, 2 R, E, 1-4, BB, .344), C Travis Scott (HR, 2 RBI, PB, 1-5, .263), and 1B Rich Poythress (HR, 2-5, .242). We'll probably see more at some point, though of course there is the risk this provides for pitchers, as seen in the tenth. Other major contributors included RF Johermyn Chavez (2B, R, .296), who had three hits, and 3B Nate Tenbrink (2B, E, .367) and DH Jake Shaffer (2B, CS, .292), who both had two hits. Mendez was indeed moved up to the leadoff spot (perhaps Jim Horner is a reader), but it didn't go so well for him, as he went 0-for-4 with a walk.
Quad Cities 16 (STL + 6), Clinton 6
Mercy. Well, some part of me irrationally hoped that RHP Tyler Blandford (9.95, L) would be able to do all right at least in terms of ERA despite the lack of command, but the River Bandits had other ideas and jumped on him for eight runs (five earned) on six hits (2 HR!), four walks, and three Ks. All that in just two innings. RHP John Housey (6.00) suffered a similar fate, with six runs (four earned) scoring on him in two and a third innings on five hits, five walks, and four Ks. He also scored three of Blandford's runs, which sucks. RHP Daniel Cooper (3.00) took over for the next three and a third innings, scoring a run by Housey and two more of his own on five hits and a walk. RHP Brandon Josselyn (0.00), the steady guy, had to wade into the disaster zone, and he allowed one hit in the last inning and a third.
2B Shaver Hansen (3 2B, R, RBI, .286), who hasn't gotten all that much playing time considering he was a fairly high draft pick, logged three doubles on the night. He might work his way into more playing time, but there's the middle infield duo of Franklin/Noriega that's hard to break up and he's less than ideal at the corners. CF Daniel Carroll (2 R, RBI, .214) had a hit and two walks leading off, SS Nick Franklin (RBI, 2 E, .333) had two singles and a walk batting second, RF James Jones (3B, R, .125) had triple, and 3B Mario Martinez (2B, R, RBI, .167) and C Steven Baron (2B, PB .174) both had doubles.
