LHP Garrett Olson (0.00) gave up a hit and two walks while striking out four in five innings of work starting out. I was beginning to like him in the 'pen, but I'm willing to take it. RHP Brian Sweeney (6.75), back stateside after three years pitching for Nippon Ham, threw the next two and two-thirds frames and let two runs score on two hits, a hit batter, a walk, and three Ks. Here's an article about it. If you're now thinking "hey, didn't he play with us in 2003", and then subsequently realizing that was seven years ago, and feeling old, you're not alone. It's slightly better than Denny Stark at least. RHP Mike Koplove (2.25) actually scored both of Sweeney's runs, with two hits and a K in an inning and a third.
SS Josh Wilson (2B, R, .343), who is still on fire or something, and 3B Matt Mangini (3B, HR, 2 RBI, .259) both had three hits. Mangini could have doubled for the cycle. I would prefer that Ichiro had homered for it, of course. RF Ryan Langerhans (2B, 2 R, RBI, .222) and LF Michael Saunders (R, RBI, .156) both had two hits in the game, with Langerhans drawing a walk. Hannahan didn't get a hit while DHing, but did have a walk. I don't know what's with the DHing though. It would seem to be most productive to have him playing the field and hitting.
Mississippi 8 (ATL - 2), West Tenn 5
RHP Michael Pineda (1.93) pitched all right, I guess, going six innings and giving up two runs on six hits (HR), a walk, and six Ks. I hold him to pretty high standard. LHP Edward Paredes (4.26) then gave up a run on three hits, a wild pitch, and two Ks in the next inning and two-thirds, but after that, RHP Mumba Rivera (9.45, BS, L) came in, signaling the start of Sad Times, as he let five runs (four earned) score in an inning and a third after two hits (HR), two walks, and three Ks, picking up his third loss of the year. Which means he's responsible for 60% of the D-Jaxx losses this year. I'm kind of tired of seeing you in double-A, sir.
The offense was pretty decent, overall outcome aside. 2B Dustin Ackley (2B, 2 RBI, .121), RF Mike Wilson (2B, R, .241), and LF Joe Dunigan (2B, R, 2 RBI, .179) all had doubles, SS Carlos Triunfel (.216) walked twice, and C Guillermo Quiroz (RBI, .346) and DH Carlos Peguero (R, .375) both had a single and a walk. Triunfel now has five walks, which is as many as he had in his 43-game tenure in Wisconsin in 2007. Progress!
Lake Elsinore 8 (SD + 2), High Desert 7
LHP Bobby LaFromboise (3.60) let three runs score in four innings after five hits, two walks, and four Ks. LHP Travis Mortimore (10.80, L) then let five runs score on six hits, two balks, a hit batter, and a K in the next inning and a third. This is obviously his worst outing so far this season, but at this point, I'm getting to the point where I think his clearest way out of High Desert, and all its obvious unfairness, is to be released. I hope nobody takes that as a dig on him, or Wild, or any of the other guys who seem to have gotten stuck in that purgatory. RHP Cheyne Hann (0.90) pitched the final three and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.
The Mavs ninth went like this: 1B Rich Poythress (R, RBI, 2-5, .268) singled, then DH Travis Scott (2B, 3 RBI, 2-5, .292) flew out, SS Juan Diaz (R, 2-5, .205) singled to move Poythress up (I would have called for a pinch-runner earlier), and RF Denny Almonte (3B, R, 2 RBI, A, 2-5, .256) drove Poythress in and moved Diaz to third before Coleman grounded into a fielder's choice that got Diaz out at home. After that, Shaffer grounded out and that ended it. All this ignores that the top three actually did some damage, as leadoff man CF Maximo Mendez (R, SB, .263) had a single and walk, 2B Kyle Seager (2B, 3 R, RBI, .350) had three hits and a walk, and 3B Nate Tenbrink (.395) walked twice. At the rate Seager and Tenbrink are going, they'd be looking at possible mid-season promotions, if not for the fact that both are pretty well blocked for the time being.
Clinton 3, Beloit 4 (MIN 0) (eleven innings)
Back-to-back eleven inning games. I'd be happy if it weren't for the loss here. RHP Taylor Stanton (4.91) gave up three runs on five hits (2 HR!) and five Ks in five innings and yes, all those runs came on the meatballs he served up. Other than that, he was good, eight grounders, two flies. RHP Erasmo Ramirez (0.00) made his stateside debut after that, allowing a hit and striking out one. He did not show his trademark groundball tendencies. LHP Brian Moran (0.00), who has been surprisingly dynamite in the longer stints this year, pitched three frames and allowed two hits while striking out five. LHP Jose Jimenez (1.69, L), however, gave up the winning, unearned run on a walk, a wild pitch, and two Ks in the eleventh, with the wild pitch scoring the decisive run. It's always that much more upsetting that way.
3B Mario Martinez (RBI, .242) and C Steve Baron (2B, 2 RBI, E, .222) both had two hits in the game, with Baron adding a walk. It's a shame that a good night at the plate for him will probably be overlooked in favor of a bad one behind it. RF James Jones (R, A, .125) drew two walks and logged an assist on the field, and 1B Vinnie Catricala (.317) and DH Dennis Raben (R, .244) both had a hit and a walk.
