Edit: It looks like Nick Hill has landed on the DL. Boo to that too. Luis Munoz will get the start.
Tacoma 5, Salt Lake City 4 (ANA - 4)
LHP Luke French (1.47) gave up four runs (two earned) on nine hits, a walk, and four Ks in five and two-thirds innings. Clearly, not his best. The relievers were perfect though, as RHP Andy Baldwin (4.38, W) struck out one in two and a third innings and RHP Levale Speigner (4.50, S) did the same in a one-inning span.
The gameball in this case goes to 1B Mike Carp (2 HR, .277), who hit a solo shot in both the fourth and the ninth, the latter deciding it. I keep wanting to call him Big Fish, while acknowledging that that is a perfectly stupid nickname. SS Josh Wilson (.364) and LF Gregory Halman (2B, 2 R, .146) both added two hits, while RF Ryan Langerhans (2B, RBI, .250) and 2B Chris Woodward (2B, R, .281) had doubles. Hannahan was 0-for-4 and made two errors while playing third.
Huntsville 9 (MIL + 3), West Tenn 2
RHP Dan Cortes (8.78, PO) took three and a third innings to hit his pitch count, giving up four runs on six hits, two wild pitches, three walks, and three Ks. RHP Mumba Rivera (8.00) was responsible for two of those scoring and one of his own in two and a third innings after two hits and a K. By now, you know how I feel about that, and you also know that this cannot be articulated in words appropriate for polite company, so I’ll leave that be. LHP Edward Paredes (4.50) let a run score on three hits and two Ks over the next inning and two-thirds, then RHP Anthony Varvaro (5.06) gave up his first runs of the season, three of them, in an inning of work after his command went south and led to two hits, a wild pitch, four walks (one intentional), and a K. RHP Aaron Jensen (0.00) allowed two hits and struck out one in the last two-thirds. Just as a point of clarification, every reliever in this allowed all of their inherited runners to score, two for Rivera, one each for Paredes and Varvaro, and three for Jensen. Awful.
Let’s talk about good things from the offense. It’s not a long list, but at least there were some. First, RF Carlos Peguero (R, PO, .378) walked three times, and anything involving him walking more is just great. Second, LF Joe Dunigan (R, .194) also had a hit and a walk. Again, good, I’m looking forward to him turning things around. Finally, 3B Alex Liddi (2B, PO, 2 E, .263) had two hits and reached base a third time by getting hit. I’d be more enthusiastic about it, but as it happens, he also made his seventh and eighth errors and got picked off, which is not cool.
Lancaster 6 (HOU - 5), High Desert 2
RHP Kenn Kasparek (3.12, L) gave up six runs on eleven hits and six Ks through six innings, so I’ll just assume that fly balls in Adelanto are nothing but the devil’s business. RHP Ryan Moorer (2.08) had a hit batter over the next two innings and RHP Marwin Vega (1.80) allowed a hit in the ninth.
The offense got two hits apiece out of 2B Kyle Seager (R, .364), 3B Edilio Colina (2B, RBI, .323), a hit and a walk from DH Nate Tenbrink (PO, .413), and doubles off the bats of 1B Scott Savastano (2B, .300) and LF Denny Almonte (2B, R, .298). It’s something, I guess.
Clinton 0, Beloit 1 (MIN + 2)
Pitching! LHP Anthony Vasquez (1.45, L) threw the first complete game for the system this season! It was also an eight-inning loss, as he gave up a run on four hits (HR) and struck out five! That’s terrible!
The person on the offense who did not suck was SS Gabriel Noriega (PO, .148), who had a single and a walk. Bless his little bat!... Wait, he got picked off too. Okay, nevermind.
