Huntsville 1 (MIL + 3), West Tenn 12 (seven innings)
RHP Steven Hensley (1.80, W) gave up a run on three hits, a walk, and four Ks through five and two-thirds innings. You know what I like about that? The lack of walks. Also the 9/4 ground/fly. And all this against a team that was earlier giving the Jaxx fits. Keep it up Hensley. RHP Josh Fields (1.74) pitched the next inning and a third and allowed a hit and two walks while striking out three. I’m less enthusiastic about that, and am hoping to rationalize it somehow as him working on a few things given that he had an eleven run lead at the time.
It doesn’t have quite the right sound to it to claim that there was a hero of the game when the team has won by double-digits, but if there were one, I would say it was RF Mike Wilson (3B, 2 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .280), because he had two home runs and a triple. Well done, sir. DH Carlos Peguero (HR, 2 RBI, 2-4, .380), C Guillermo Quiroz (HR, 1-3, .366), and SS Carlos Triunfel (HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, 1-3, .232) also had home runs, which is dandy, particularly in Triunfel’s case as it was a grand slam, as you might have been able to surmise. LF Johan Limonta (R, .228) and 1B Alex Liddi (2B, 2 R, .255) both had two hits apiece. The D-Jaxx only left one man on base all night. Wrap your minds around that if you can. This offense was extremely efficient.
High Desert 7, Lake Elsinore 1 (SD - 1)
After the heavens stopped conspiring against him, LHP Bobby LaFromboise (2.93, W) had a pretty good start, going five and a third innings and allowing a run to score on a solo shot, and had three other hits, a hit batter, a walk, and five Ks to his line. Following him, LHP Travis Mortimore (8.10) hit one and struck out three in the next inning and two-thirds, and, hey, great to see him doing that. RHP Steven Richard (7.11) allowed two hits, but no further runs in the next inning, then RHP Stephen Penney (1.42), who walked one, balked, and struck out one in an inning of work.
The offense did pretty well, lacking a bit in firepower, but no complaints otherwise. C Travis Scott (R, .286) and RF Johermyn Chavez (2 RBI, .311) both reached three times, Scott with a single and two walks, Chavez with two singles and one walk. CF Maximo Mendez (R, SB, .333), 3B Nate Tenbrink (2B, R, RBI, .407), DH Jake Shaffer (R, .268), and SS Juan Diaz (2B, 2 RBI, SB, .192) all got aboard twice, everyone with two hits save Diaz, who had the double and a walk.
Kane County 5 (OAK - 2), Clinton 4
I had one particular word that I wanted to use to open this recap, but it got me to wondering what would get by the language censors and what wouldn’t and I decided I like it here. So, phooey? LHP James Gilheeney (2.21) had a decent outing, going five innings and allowing four hits and three walks while striking out seven. It is the walks that prohibit me from being more exuberant. RHP Chris Kirkland (0.90, BS) then gave up two unearned runs on a hit, a hit batter, two walks, and two Ks in two-thirds of an inning. RHP John Housey (4.32) did all right through the next inning and a third, allowing one hit and striking out a pair. Following him, RHP Brandon Josselyn (4.50, BS, L) gave up three runs on three hits and a walk against three Ks. I would use this and his bad week as an excuse to dog on him for being a Yalie, which would have the added effect of making me feel both pretentious and stupid, but I’m not going to do that because RHP Daniel Cooper (6.14) let the deciding run score after a hit in a third of an inning, and realistically, he’s just not as bad as his recent numbers would lead one to believe anyway.
Moving awkwardness to… offense… DH Vinnie Catricala (2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .281) had a fine night with a pair of doubles, and 2B Nick Franklin (3B, .333) had a triple and a walk, but didn’t score because it was two-out triple.
