Sometime in the distant past, I remember staying up to try to recap an extra-inning game that had gone onto something like sixteen. After the third or fourth inning of just sitting there, biding my time, I gave up, and in the half inning after I went to bed, the game was concluded. This was a fairly similar scenario. RHP David Pauley (3.38) started this out, four hours prior, giving up a run on three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and five Ks. Unfortunately, RHP Steven Shell (3.24, BS), who’d had little opportunity to pitch of late, gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits in the next inning. RHP Andy Baldwin (3.68) kept it close with one walk in the eighth, but again, RHP Levale Speigner (5.40, BS) gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and three Ks and there we were in extras again. That brought in RHP Brian Sweeney (2.79, W), who really did earn this win by managing to stick it out for seventy-two pitches, getting through four and a third frames allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven. If there’s a rotation spot opening in Tacoma, I’d say it ought to go to him.
As all good extra-inning affairs are inclined to end, this one went out with a bang, as DH Tommy Everidge (HR, 3 RBI, .258) hit a bomb with Woodward on and that ended it. C Eliezer Alfonzo (2 2B, R, RBI, .286) was the other big contributor, collecting three hits in the game. As this went over by another half a game and then some, I kind of feel awkward about highlighting guys that only went two-for, and there unfortunately weren’t any other extra-base hits beyond those two guys either. One note I would add is that Saunders struck out three times, went 0-for-7, and is hitting .138 and I’m starting to get spooked.
Montgomery 4 (TB + 1), West Tenn 8
This was better, I think. RHP Dan Cortes (6.56, W) let two runs score on three hits, two wild pitches, and three walks while striking out seven in five innings. A little less wildness and we’re in the clear. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (1.84) pitched the next three frames and let two runs (one earned) score on four hits and three Ks. RHP Anthony Varvaro (2.79) allowed one hit in the ninth.
D-Jaxx hitting feasted on the Biscuits pitching… what? No? Fine. 1B Johan Limonta (2B, HR, 2 RBI, CS, .291) was the best of the bunch, with three hits in the game. LF Carlos Peguero (2B, 2 R, .385) and DH Dustin Ackley (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, .153) both added two hits, Peguero coming a few feet shy of his tenth home run with that double. RF Joe Dunigan (HR, 2 RBI, E, .215) added a home run, his third. I might’ve expected more walks though, as there were only two.
Rancho Cucamonga 3 (ANA 0), High Desert 5
RHP Jake Wild (4.81, W) ran his record to 3-0 too, giving up three runs on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, and seven Ks, with no walks. Close enough to a quality start, right? RHP Stephen Penney (0.87) had one hit allowed and three Ks over the next three innings. The ninth had RHP Cheyne Hann (1.80, S) picking up his third save.
For the second night in a row, 1B Rich Poythress (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .313) was one of the stars of the offense with three hits total, including his fifth home run. But Rich, I’d sure appreciate it if you’d do that outside of both Adelanto and Lancaster. It would really mean a lot to us prospect watchers. For next up, I’ll go with RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, .290) for hitting his second home run and walking. Of the rest, 2B Kyle Seager (SB, .319) added another two walks to his totals, 3B Nate Tenbrink (2B, R, .392) had a double, DH Jake Shaffer (2 RBI, .305) had two RBI, and SS Juan Diaz (SB, .230) had a single and a walk.
Clinton 5, Cedar Rapids 7 (ANA - 5)
It would be tempting the fates a bit much to ask for a sweep three days in a row. LHP James Gilheeney (3.20, L) had a bit of a dinger problem in this one, giving up two home runs in five innings, which contributed to six runs (four earned) after six hits. He didn’t allow any walks though, so I suppose that’s something, but no one on the staff did. LHP Brian Moran (0.00) scored one of those and an unearned of his own on two hits, a wild pitch, and a K before giving way to RHP John Housey (4.26), who allowed one hit and struck out four in the final two and two-thirds. He also let Moran’s run score.
The Kernels were hardly the only ones with dingers. SS Nick Franklin (HR, 2 RBI, E, 2-5, .337), DH Dennis Raben (2B, HR, 2 R, 2-5, .280), and LF Matt Cerione (HR, 1-4, .167) all had home runs. It was the first for Cerione, and the fifth for both Raben and Franklin. That's as weird for me to type as it is for you to read. RF James Jones (E, .221) added a hit and two walks, though little came of it. Jones is the first Lumberking to break double digits in walks.
