I don’t wholly know how to interpret this, but the knee jerk reaction is that LHP Garrett Olson (4.66, E, L) is still just as bad at starting as we remember. Four Ks against no walks in five innings isn’t much consolation when you give up five runs on seven hits (HR) and a hit batter. LHP Chris Seddon (4.50) struck out two in the next inning and two-thirds, so I guess he’s out of the rotation now. That brought in RHP Shawn Kelley (27.00), newly optioned, who gave up two runs on a hit, two walks, and two Ks in two-thirds of an inning. RHP Chad Cordero (5.40) scored one of those on a hit, a walk, and a K in the final inning and two-thirds. But hey, not nearly as heartbreaking as that M’s game, am I right? (hangs head)
1B Brad Nelson (2B, .294) and RF Ryan Langerhans (2B, R, E, .257) both had doubles and 2B Chris Woodward (R, .289) had a single and a walk. I will have few opportunities to speak about hitting tonight.
Montgomery 10 (TB + 2), West Tenn 4
Bullpen day!... is more awful than it is exciting. RHP Steve Bray (7.27, L) gave up six runs (two earned) on five hits (HR), a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and a K in three innings. LHP Edward Paredes (2.84) pitched the next two, allowing two hits, two walks, and a K, which would be all right, if not for the walks. After that, RHP Mumba Rivera (8.59) gave up four runs on three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks, but RHP Luis Munoz (5.06) scored two of those on a hit, a walk, and a K in an inning and a third. RHP Josh Fields (1.35) gave up a hit and struck out one in the ninth.
CF Kuo-hui Lo (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .243) and 3B Alex Liddi (HR, 2 RBI, .273) both went 2-for- 4 with their third home runs.
Rancho Cucamonga 3 (ANA - 1), High Desert 11
RHP Kenn Kasparek (3.18, W) managed to avoid quite a lot of danger, giving up just three runs (two earned) despite eight hits (HR), a walk, and a K. He also had 2/12 ground/fly, at home, in Mavericks Stadium. Like I said, danger. RHP Fray Martinez (0.00) followed for three innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Apparently Marwin Vega is on the restricted list or something, for reasons I can’t identify. Anyway, that’s probably why Martinez is around. RHP Steven Richard (4.82) pitched the ninth and allowed two hits while striking out one.
DH Travis Scott (2B, 2 R, RBI, .286) was the one hitter in the lineup to reach four times, though everyone reached at least once and kudos to them on that. Seeing this squad draw nine walks in a game is awesome. 2B Kyle Seager (2B, R, .320), SS Edilio Colina (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .308) and 1B Rich Poythress (R, .313) were all on three times, Colina with two hits and a walk and the others with a hit and two walks. Seager has a OBP .105 points higher than his average. I like that. Reaching twice were RF Johermyn Chavez (2B, 2 R, SB, .288), CF Denny Almonte (2 R, SB, .244), and LF Jake Shaffer (2B, R, 3 RBI, .317), Chavez and Almonte with a hit and a walk and Shaffer with a pair of hits. C Trevor Coleman (2B, 3 RBI, .156) had the one remaining double in the lineup. That’s eight for nine on mentions.
Clinton 0, Peoria 4 (CHC + 6) (five innings)
This was something I didn’t expect so soon, but RHP Erasmo Ramirez (3.07, L) got the start, and, not that he was pitching well, the rain held him to four innings in which he gave up four runs on seven hits and a K. On the plus side, he had a 10/0 ground fly, which will make your calculator break if you try to enter it.
The offense was no-hit. Sure, Jones walked, but then he was picked off. I don’t know that it would have been the case had we gone a full nine innings. It sucks regardless.
