Tacoma 0, Portland 2 (SD - 26)
You know you could be watching this series on Comcast 179. The camera quality isn’t that great, but it’s definitely the Rainiers. LHP Mauricio Robles (4.50, L) had another uncomfortable start because hey, he struck out eight over six innings and only allowed two runs on three hits (HR), but oh there were the six walks. One walks six and still manages to pitch through the sixth by throwing 109 pitches. Oops. RHP Anthony Varvaro (3.47) had a hit and two Ks in the next two and RHP Josh Lueke (2.84) walked one and struck out a pair in the ninth. This meant that you had Josh Lueke and Cory Luebke pitching in the same game. It was confusing.
3B Matt Mangini (.303) had two singles. That was about all that happened for the offense.
Tennessee 4 (CHC + 15), West Tenn 5
Hey, playoff hopes are still alive. LHP Anthony Vasquez (2.70, PO) had a pretty solid outing, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and seven Ks in five innings. RHP Steven Richard (4.70) was perfect through the next two, striking out a pair. Unfortunately, LHP Cesar Jimenez (1.50, BS, W) had to go and give up a solo shot, and also walked one and struck out a pair in the two innings he worked. But hey, rally.
LF Nate Tenbrink (3B, 3 R, RBI, .289) and 3B Alex Liddi (2B, R, RBI, .268) both had three hits in the game and Liddi added a walk. Rumor of his decline seem to have been exaggerated. He even drove in Tenbrink on a single after Tenbrink tripled with two outs in the ninth. C Brandon Bantz (2B, R, .242) doubled and CF (yes, CF) Carlos Peguero (.250) had a single and a walk.
High Desert 4, Inland Empire 6 (LA - 14)
LHP Nate Reed (6.75) pitched four innings and let four runs (three earned) score on three hits, four wild pitches, four walks, and three Ks. LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.37) followed in relief and gave up two runs on three hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against a K. Considering my recent analysis of LaFromboise as a starter versus as a reliever in the weekly wrap, I mentally just let out an enormous “UGH”. RHP Stephen Penney (3.34) followed and struck out one in the inning and a third he worked, which brought in RHP Cheyne Hann (6.79) for the eighth, and he allowed two hits.
DH Jake Shaffer (2B, R, .333) and CF Maximo Mendez (R, SB, .215) both had two hits and a walk. A hit and a walk was a fairly common thing on the night, as 2B Kyle Seager (3B, R, RBI, .344), SS Edilio Colina (RBI, .295), and 1B Ji-man Choi (2B, R, RBI, .310) all managed it. People should be talking more about Choi, perhaps instead of certain DSL pitchers facing sketchy competition. C Ralph Henriquez (2B, RBI, .283) had a double.
Quad Cities 5 (STL + 6), Clinton 14
RHP Taylor Stanton (4.29, W) had as many strikeouts as the Lumberkings had runs, though he did let two score on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, and a walk in seven innings. RHP Jonathan Arias (9.00) let three score on three hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, and two walks against two Ks, but I think at that point they would have taken just about anything to get through the rest of the game.
C Henry Contreras (2 R, RBI, .375) and CF Matt Cerione (R, 2 RBI, .284) both had three hits and Cerione had a walk. RF James Jones (2B, 2 R, RBI, .261) and LF Vinnie Catricala (3 R, RBI, .305) also reached three times, via two hits and a walk apiece. It’s a bit of a long time getting to it, but 2B Nick Franklin (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .284) had a home run, a walk, and another stolen base. 1B Mickey Wiswall (2B, R, .325) doubled and DH Tim Morris (R, RBI, .253) had a single and a walk.
Everett 7, Eugene 4 (SD - 1)
RHP Chris Sorce (4.03, W) pitched six and two-thirds innings and let two score on three hits, a hit batter, three walks, and nine Ks. That’s probably the best we’ve seen out of him in a while. RHP Willy Kesler (1.63) gave up a pair of hits and struck out two in the next inning and a third and RHP Eric Thomas (4.96) let two score on two hits, two wild pitches, and two walks against a K in the ninth.
RF Kevin Rivers (3B, HR, 3 RBI, .318) had two extra-base hits in the game, which included his tenth home run. I would have figured he was already there? LF Kalian Sams (HR, 2 RBI, .176) hit out his fourth at the level and struck out the other three times. All is right in the world. 3B Terry Serrano (R, SB. CS, .296) and CF Robbie Anston (2B, .297) both had a hit and a walk and DH Kevin Mailloux (2B, 3 R, SB, .285) doubled. Serrano was successful in stealing home but unsuccessful in stealing second.
Pulaski 5, Elizabethton 4 (MIN + 16)
RHP Richard Vargas (4.25) lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks. Worry? RHP Lance Abbott (1.89) pitched the next five and a third innings, which is probably the longest outing of his career, giving up four hits, hitting one, handing out two free passes, and striking out a pair. RHP Matthew Bischoff (3.10, W) had a hit, a walk, and six Ks in the last three. Perhaps he’s okay after all?
2B Jorge Agudelo (3B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .309) had two hits and a walk in the game. All-star utility infielder! RF Jabari Blash (.281) had a hit and a walk. The idea that Blash might have a third outcome and not just two and a half is alarming to my delicate minor league sensibilities.
AZL Rangers 2, Peoria Mariners 5 (seven innings)
LHP Derrick Saito (5.14) pitched three frames this time out and allowed a hit and a walk while striking out four. RHP Taijuan Walker (0.00) then walked one in the next inning, his first time pitching in about forty days. RHP Charles Kaalekahi (5.63, W) let two score on five hits (HR) and two Ks in the last three.
1B Michael Acevedo (R, .350) and LF Guillermo Pimentel (2B, 2 RBI, .233) both had two hits in the gam, RF-CF Alfredo Morales (2 R, .238) had a couple walks, and CF Jarrett Burgess (2B, .300) and 2B Patrcik Brady (2B, .146) both had doubles.
Peoria Mariners 4, AZL Rangers 5 (seven innings)
Game two wasn’t as fun. RHP Seon Gi Kim (5.14) pitched the first five innings and had three runs score against him on seven hits and six Ks. LHP Kody Kurowski (4.09, BS, L) gave up the decisive two runs (one earned) on three hits, a walk, and a K in the sixth.
DH Guillermo Pimentel (HR, .240) and CF Rigoberto Rangel (2B, R, RBI, .250) both had two hits in the game and 2B Patrick Brady (HR, .154), like Pimentel, hit a home run, except his was his first as a pro. It also came in the first, whereas Pimentel’s sixth home run came in the sixth. Wacky.
DSL Mets2 5, Yamasa Mariners 7
You guys, we’re going to the second round! No thanks to RHP Domingo Brazoban (108.00), who let four runs score on four hits, a hit batter, and a walk in just a third of an inning. RHP Gregorio Aquino (0.00) scored one of those on a hit, a wild pitch, a hit batter, two walks, and two LKs in two and two-thirds innings. LHP Wander Marte (0.00) then walked three and struck out one in an inning and a third, which is roughly to be expected. LHP Martin Abad (1.93, W) earned the win with a run scoring against him on three hits and three Ks in the final four and two-thirds innings.
LF George Drullard (2 2B, R, RBI, A, .500) was 4-for-4 out of the ninth spot in the order and threw a runner out at third. Value! DH Axel Wel (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .273) was 2-for-4 with a walk and had the team’s only home run. 3B Jordy Lara (2 R, RBI, .333) added three hits, 2B George Soto (R, .000) had two walks, and RF Janelfry Zorilla (2B, RBI, SB, .300) had a double and a walk.
