We did it! RHP Blake Beavan (6.69) gave up five runs on eleven hits (HR), a wild pitch, walk, and four Ks in four frames, which wasn’t so cool but could have been worse. RHP Anthony Varvaro (4.01) pitched the next inning and a third and had two score against him after two hits, a wild pitch, and two walks with four Ks. LHP Edward Paredes (5.60) faced one batter, who reached on error and that scored a run, and the same runner along with the remaining one from Varvaro scored when RHP Levale Speigner (4.99, W) came in and gave up three hits while striking out one in two and two-thirds. RHP Dan Cortes (4.50) struck out one in the ninth.
3B Matt Mangini (2 HR, 3 R, .313) had four hits, which is notable in and of itself because two of them left the park. It we’re sticking with that line of thinking, you also have DH Brad Nelson (2 HR, 3 R, 5 RBI, .260) who also had two hits for which the same thing happened. Gosh there have been a lot of home runs in this series. For three-hit offerings, C Eliezer Alfonzo (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .248) pulled that off, 1B Justin Smoak (2 R, RBI, .266) and RF David Winfree (2 2B, 3 R, RBI, .322) were both in the two hits and a walk camp, and LF Mike Carp (HR, 3 R, A, .249) had a home run and two walks. CF Gregory Halman (2B, 3B, R, 4 RBI, E, .246) had two hits and didn’t walk. Someone be surprised about that. 2B Dustin Ackley (HR, .271) finally got in on the festivities by hitting his fourth home run at the level, but on the whole I think he’s been losing steam this August. It’s mostly this past week.
West Tenn 1, Montgomery 10 (TB - 3)
Demoralizing. RHP Steve Bray (5.23, L) let eight runs score on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, three walks, and four Ks, all in three innings. His record is 7-11. I giggled. RHP Aaron Jensen (4.75) let two score in the next frame and had two score against him on three hits and a walk. Things were less dumb from where out as LHP Cesar Jimenez (1.29) allowed two hits without trouble and RHP Wes Littleton (7.91) and LHP Nick Hill (4.46) both had strikeouts while splitting the last three in a 2:1 ratio.
CF Carlos Peguero (HR, .252) hit a home run. Of his twenty-two on the season, thirteen have been in not-April. C Guillermo Quiroz (2B, .296) and SS Leury Bonilla (2B, .263) both had doubles.
Lake Elsinore 4 (SD 0), High Desert 5
RHP Andrew Carraway (5.26) gave up four runs on five hits, two walks, and six KS in seven innings which included three home runs. I am becoming strangely numb to this phenomenon. LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.42) struck out one in the next inning and RHP Daniel Cooper (4.05, S) allowed a hit and walked a pair in the last frame.
SS Edilio Colina (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .299), DH Jake Shaffer (3B, RBI, .338), and LF Daniel Carroll (2 2B< 2 R, .222) all had two hits, C Trevor Coleman (HR, 2 RBI, .210) hit his sixth home run and walked, and 2B Kyle Seager (2B, .345) doubled.
Clinton 6, Peoria 2 (CHC - 1) (seven innings)
Doubleheader! RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (2.15, W) let both the runs score after nine hits, four walks, and five Ks. Even though it wasn’t that good a game and abbreviated, it was a complete one, technically.
RF James Jones (2B, R, 2 RBI, .271) had four hits out of the leadoff spot. Yay! SS Nick Franklin (R, .283) walked three times batting second. Also yay! C Henry Contreras (2B, R, .344) and CF Matt Cerione (2B, R, .286) both had doubles and LF Ryan Royster (2 R, RBI, .455) had a single and a walk. That’s cool too.
Clinton 1, Peoria 2 (0) (seven innings)
This one was lost in the seventh and, frankly, that sucks. RHP Jonathan Arias (3.86) pitchedthe first four and had a hit, a walk, and three Ks to his name. RHP Stephen Pryor (4.38) then had a hit and a K in the next two. RHP Brandon Josselyn (4.22, BS, L) turned four consecutive hits without an out into two runs in the seventh.
1B Mickey Wiswall (2B, .301), LF Vinnie Catricala (2B, .306), and CF Matt Cerione (2B, R, SB, .287) all had doubled. No walks or anything.
Eugene 2 (SD - 1), Everett 7
RHP Ogui Diaz (5.12, W) pitched five innings and allowed just three hits while striking out a pair and that’s just dandy. RHP Chris Kessinger (7.42) gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in the next inning and a third. I’m less enthused about that. RHP John Housey (3.09) got the next two outs, one of which was a K, and then RHP Willy Kesler (1.52, S) struck out four of six that he faced to get the save.
RF Kevin Rivers (2 R, 2 RBI, .330) had three hits, CF Robbie Anston (2B, R, CS, .295) and 3B Kevin Mailloux (2 2B, R, RBI, .295) both had two, 2B Terry Serrano (2B, 2 R, .304) and DH Fred Bello (CS, .189) both had a hit and a walk and C Steve Baron (2B, 2 RBI, .250) doubled.
Greeneville 4 (HOU - 4), Pulaski 5
RHP Jesse Nava (4.36, E) gave up three unearned runs after five hits, a wild pitch, four walks and four Ks which was not so hot. It was pretty awesome when RHP Preston Vancil (2.84) gave up a hit and struck out seven in the next three and two-thirds, though. RHP Ben Versnik (3.86) and RHP Matthew Bischoff (3.30, S) split the last two innings, Versnik with a walk and three Ks, Bischoff also with three Ks, but giving up a run on two hits before he got there. Why, that’s seventeen strikeouts.
LF Jose Rivero (HR, 2 RBI, .302) had three hits in the game, 3B Ramon Morla (2 2B, 2 R, E, .325) had two,1B Matt Browning (2B, .324) and DH Jetsy Extrano (2B, R, .229) both had doubles with Extrano adding a walk, and RF Jabari Blash (RBI, .255) had a single and a walk.
AZL Padres 3, Peoria Mariners 4
At least the season ended with a win over our horrible rivals. RHP Jandy Sena (4.01, W) pitched five innings and let a run score on three hits, a wild pitch, three walks, and three Ks. RHP Charles Kaalekahi (5.21) pitched the next three and another run scored on two hits, a walk, and three Ks. In the ninth, a last run scored against LHP Kody Kurowski (4.30, S) after two hits and a K.
LF Guillermo Pimentel (2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .250) had three hits and a walk, which is a fine way of going out. 2B Carlos Ramirez (2 R, .234) and SS Bryan Brito (SB, CS, .157) both had two hits, though Ramirez added a walk. 1B Jose Flores (2B, 2 RBI, .228) doubled.
