Close, but the bullpen let it go. Not that RHP Maikel Cleto (5.58) wasn’t exactly brilliant either, as he gave up three runs on five hits, two walks, two hit batters, and three Ks LHP Brian Moran (4.76) had an uneventful seventh, and then RHP Marwin Vega (10.25) let four score on three hits and a hit batter in a third of an inning, two of them coming on a blown save by RHP Stephen Penney (2.51, BS), who gave up a hit and struck out one. That doesn’t change the fact that Vega is probably one of the most frustrating pitching prospects we’ve had in recent memory, having basically failed to develop since his Everett stint. RHP Blake Nation (5.08, L) gave up one last run on two hits, a hit batter, and a walk in the last third of an inning. So there was that.
SS Kyle Seager (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .329), 2B Edilio Colina (2 R, RBI, .304), DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2B, .386), CF Denny Almonte (HR, .280), and LF Jake Shaffer (R, .322) all had two hits. Seventeenth home run for Almonte, and the fifth for Seager. RF Johermyn Chavez (RBI, .294) had a hit and a walk. I don’t know that he’s worried about Almonte catching up for the team lead.
Clinton 5, Kane County 7 (OAK + 2)
This was not the LHP Nick Czyz (2.96, L) start I was hoping for, but I suppose he had to struggle some time. He went five innings this time with six runs scoring on seven hits (HR), two hit batters, and three Ks. RHP Taylor Lewis (6.16) had a run score on a hit, a double in this case, and a K in the next inning, then RHP Ryan Moorer (4.50) walked one in the next frame, and LHP Jose Jimenez (2.43) finally finished it off with a hit and a K in the eighth.
Major offensive contributions included extra-base hits and walks from CF Daniel Carroll (HR, 2 R, SB, .276) and RF James Jones (2B, R, .243). Everyone in the lineup did have a hit, it was just exactly one hit and didn’t come together nicely enough.
Spokane 2 (TEX - 1), Everett 6
Hooray, more wins. RHP Chris Sorce (3.00, W) gave up two runs on five hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against three Ks in a six-inning start. LHP Jason Markovitz (1.00) took over from there, walking one and striking out two in two frames of work, and then RHP Fray Martinez (2.38) had a hit, a walk and a K in the last inning.
2B Hawkins Gebbers (HR, 2 R, .211) and DH Kevin Mailloux (R, RBI, .258) both had two hits, with Mailloux adding a walk, and like Gebbers, SS Terry Serrano (HR, E, .254) also had a home run. I kind of feel bad that Gebbers is on a return tour of the league, but he wasn’t doing much at the higher levels thus far and at least he’s familiar to the area. RF Dwight Britton (R, 2 SB, .214) drew two walks.
Pulaski 6, Danville 0 (ATL - 1)
RHP Nolan Diaz (6.20) pitched one of his better starts to this point, going seven innings and allowing eight hits and a walk while striking out five. No runs! RHP Lance Abbott (1.29) walked a pair and struck out three in the last two frames.
The Mariners got two hits apiece from 2B Derek Poppert (2B, R, RBI, E, .224), RF Jose Rivero (R, SB, .500), and CF Mario Yepez (HR, 2 R, SB, .176).
AZL Athletics 5, Peoria Mariners 1
RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (0.60) finally gave up a run after a hit, a couple wild pitches, and a walk against five Ks through the same number of innings. Promote him anyway. RHP Jeroen de Haas (6.00, L) let two runs score on three hits and a walk in the next inning which was enough for the loss. RHP Michael Aviles (12.96) also let a run score, in his case on a hit, two wild pitches, a hit batter, and a pair of walks against a K in the seventh. LHP Scott Ronnenbergh (3.86) pitched the last two innings and allowed a hit and struck out a pair.
C Carlton Tanabe (R, SB, .150) had a single and a stolen base and scored the team’s only run. That’s a reach pick.
VSL Pirates 12, Aguirre Mariners 2
It was another messy start for RHP Vicente Campos (4.38, E, L), who gave up five runs on five hits and a wild pitch, and a walk in two innings. Do I excuse it on the grounds of him facing the league’s best? RHP Isliexel Gonzalez (5.23) also had an ugly run in his inning and a third, letting three score on five hits and four walks. RHP Rafael Carrera (0.00) made his pro debut after that, stranding all of Gonzo’s runners and allowing a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk himself over two and two-thirds innings while striking out two. RHP Daniel Mata (6.41) let four plate on five hits, a couple wild pitches, a hit batter, and three walks against three Ks in the last three innings. Gonzo seems unluckier in that context.
As was the case in Peoria, I’m reaching for offense, so let’s go with CF Rashynol Michel (R, SB, .273) and PH-DH Jose Kalbakgi (R, SB, .163), who both had a hit in two at-bats, scored the team’s only runs, and stole bases. In Michel’s case, it was a steal of home.
DSL Cardinals 2, Yamasa Mariners 8
LHP Henry Perez (0.58, W) pitched seven innings and gave up five hits and a walk while striking out six. Somehow I would think of this as a lesser start for him. RHP Oliver Garcia (2.08) gave up two runs (one earned) on a hit, a wild pitch, two walks, and a K in the next third of an inning. RHP Junior Nunez (0.95) scored one of those, but was otherwise perfect through the last inning and two-thirds, striking out one.
1B Rudy van Heydoorn (HR, 2 RBI, .298) and DH Axel Wel (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .143) both had home runs in the game, with Wel adding one walk and van Heydoorn adding two. SS Luis Matias (2B, 2 RBI, .262) and LF George Drullard (2B, RBI, .250) both had two hits, with Matias drawing a walk on top of that.
