Tacoma 3, Reno 6 (ARI - 18)
Of all the teams the Rainiers could start losing to, Reno was not one that I anticipated. LHP Luke French (2.97, L) pitched five and two-thirds innings, scoring five runs on ten hits (HR) and five Ks in that span. Reno cares nothing for ERA leaders. RHP Joe Nelson (7.50) gave up a run on two hits and a K in the next two-thirds, and then LHP Edward Paredes (36.00) saw two-thirds of an inning, walking one, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out one. RHP Anthony Varvaro (0.00) struck out one in the ninth.
Positive news could be found in 3B Matt Mangini (2B, R, RBI, .311) and 2B Dustin Ackley (2 2B, RBI, .250) both getting two hits. You might also like DH Mike Sweeney (2B, R, .600) getting three hits, I don’t know. SS Matt Tuiasosopo (R, .284) and 1B Brad Nelson (RBI, .285) both had a hit and a walk. Did you know that Tui has more walks than Ks? I don’t think most people realize that. C Adam Moore (.352) walked twice and RF David Winfree (3B, .286) tripled. Someone call up Moore already.

West Tenn 6, Huntsville 13 (MIL + 3)
Ouch. RHP Blake Beavan (11.25, L) took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk against three Ks in four innings. RHP Steve Bray (4.02), who was the man displaced in the rotation, I guess, let seven more (two earned) score after nine hits (HR) and two walks in the next inning and two-thirds. RHP Luis Munoz (4.29) allowed a solo home run and struck out two in the final two and a third innings.
SS Carlos Triunfel (HR, 3 RBI, .277) hit his sixth home run! He may yet hit double-digits this year. 2B Matt Lawson (2B, R, .333) and 3B Alex Liddi (2B, R, RBI, SB, E, .264) both had two hits, and DH Carlos Peguero (2B, R, RBI, .273) and CF-C Leury Bonilla (R, .255) both had a single and a walk. Bonilla played both the position that requires the most speed and the one that requires the least. Awesome.

Inland Empire 12 (LA – 3), High Desert 4
LHP Anthony Vasquez (3.10, L) let nine runs (seven earned) score on eleven hits, two walks, and a K in four and two-thirds innings. I can’t even blame on the wind this time, but it was awful hot out. RHP Blake Nation (5.47) let three more runs score on two hits (HR) and a walk against two Ks in the next inning and a third, before giving way to LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.20), who allowed a hit, threw a wild pitch, and struck out six in two innings of work. Methinks he’d like to be back in the rotation. RHP Marwin Vega (9.88) had a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and a K in the ninth, and no runs scored. Something of a minor miracle.
2B Kyle Seager (HR, 2 RBI, .333) had three hits leading off, including his sixth home run. LF Kuo-hui Lo (3B, R, .417) had a triple and a walk and then was pinch-hit for halfway through the game. Who knows why? CF Denny Almonte (R, RBI, .278) had two hits, DH Jake Shaffer (2B, R, RBI, .324) doubled, and RF Johermyn Chavez (.296) had a single and a walk.

South Bend 0 (ARI - 6), Clinton 6
I don’t know what’s gotten into LHP Jimmy Gilheeney (2.73, PO, W) these past few weeks, but it’s been one of the best surprises in recent memory. This time out he went seven innings, allowing five hits, plunking a batter, and striking out five. RHP John Housey (4.27) struck out one in the eighth and RHP Daniel Cooper (4.93) allowed a hit in the ninth.
DH Tim Morris (2 R, .318) and 1B Vinnie Catricala (2B, HR, 3 RBI, .280) were both 2-for-3 with a walk in the winning effort. That was Catricala’s second home run this month. 3B Mario Martinez (2B, R, RBI, .243) added a double, but struck out three times, which was a problem Cerione and Carroll also had. Franklin unfortunately stopped reaching base every time up. It had to happen sometime.

Everett 5, Yakima 3 (ARI - 3)
RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (5.40, W), promoted from the desert just the other day, went five innings and let three runs score on six hits while striking out five in the same number of innings. RHP Forrest Snow (0.00, S) on the other hand, may have catapulted himself into POTW status with a four-inning save that had him allow two hits, walk one, and strike out seven.
The offense was a solo shot by DH Mickey Wiswall (.243) in the fourth and a grand slam by 3B Kevin Mailloux (HR, 4 RBI, .255) the next inning. SS Anthony Phillips (R, .206) added two walks and CF Ryan Royster (R, CS, .317) had a single and a walk.

Danville 6 (ATL + 1), Pulaski 7
I don’t know at this point if Vargas is on the DL or not (my gut says “maybe”), but RHP Timothy Boyce (4.76, W) started the game and went seven innings, allowing five runs (three earned) to score after six hits, a walk, and two Ks. RHP Preston Vancil (13.50) had a nearly disastrous start to the eighth as he allowed three hits without recording an out, which led to a run scoring, but RHP Matthew Bischoff (1.84, S) stranded both and had a walk and a K overall in two innings of work.
The offense got two hits apiece out of DH Derek Poppert (2B, 2 R, .246), CF Mario Yepez (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .200), RF James Wood (HR, SB, .272), and 1B Ethan Paquette (HR, 2 RBI, .247). It was the fourth home run for Yepez and the first pro dinger for both Wood and Paquette. I could have sworn each already hit theirs. C Andrew Giobbi (R, .292) walked twice and LF Jose Rivero (3B, RBI, .421) had a triple.

Peoria Mariners 11, AZL Cubs 13
The offense was better today, but the pitching made me sad. RHP Seon Gi Kim (7.52) let five runs score in four innings on six hits, a hit batter, two walks, and seven Ks. Wild. LHP Kody Kurowski (4.50) let seven more runs (three earned) score on seven hits, a walk, and a K in the fifth inning, then RHP Jeroen de Haas (4.80) gave up a run on two hits and a walk in the sixth. RHP Danny Cruz Ayala (0.79) allowed two hits and struck out three in the final two. With the promotions of Wilhelmsen and Vancil, he may be the most interesting pitcher there outside of Walker.
Offense!... AZL offense at least. It was 108 at game time. I can’t imagine. 3B Carlos Ramirez (2B, R, 2 RBI, .298) had four hits in the game, LF Michael Acevedo (R, RBI, SB, .310) had three, and 2B Danny Lopez (3 R, 2 E, .256), C Ji-man Choi (3B, 2 R, RBI, .438), DH Jose Flores (2B, R, 3 RBI, .260), and 1B Matt Browning (R, 2 RBI, .267) all had two hits, with Choi contributing the team’s only walk. RF Guillermo Pimentel (3B, R, .215) added his first triple. Choi’s triple was also his first.

The whole of the VSL was rained out today. Not only that, it was rained out pretty early in the day.
