Moniker Madness has begun! It’s one of my favorite times of year. That said, longtime favorite Jetsy Extrano is going to get hosed because all anyone is going to see in that bracket is “LOL, butts.” Sigh.

Tacoma 9, Reno 3 (ARI - 19)
It helps to have your ace on the mound, even if he’s not at the top of his game. RHP Michael Pineda (4.03, W) got the win after going six and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on five hits, a hit batter, a walk, and three Ks. They pulled him at 85 pitches in the middle of an inning, which indicates some seriousness about the pitch count, even though the Rainiers were then holding a five-run lead and no one was on base. RHP Scott Patterson (1.84) allowed one run after two hits (HR) and a K in the next inning and a third, and then something surely happened, because he was ejected after the Rainiers batted to open the ninth, along with Daren Brown. Perhaps there was some play that made them upset, but since they had the lead it’s hard to imagine what it was. Alfonzo was pulled for a pinch-runner after an injury delay on the field, so there may have been foul play, or the supposition of it. RHP Sean White (0.00) walked one in the ninth. I’m fine with him in a six-run lead.
CF Gregory Halman (2 HR, 5 RBI, .255) hit another two home runs in this one, though he also struck out twice. That makes for eight this month, a season high and only two-thirds of the way in and broken up by the ASG. I wouldn’t bet against him hitting thirty at this point. He did strike out twice though. SS Chris Woodward (2B, 2 RBI, .227) and DH Mike Sweeney (2B, R, .500) also had two hits of lesser distance, 1B Mike Carp (.251) had a single and two walks, 2B Dustin Ackley (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .235), RF David Winfree (2B, R, .284), and C Eliezer Alfonzo (3B, R, E, .271) all had extra-base knocks, and 3B Matt Mangini (R, .310) and LF Matt Tuiasosopo (R, .283) both had a hit and a walk.

West Tenn 7, Huntsville 3 (MIL + 2)
The outcome was pretty awesome. Getting there, not so good. LHP Mauricio Robles (4.32) gave up a run on two hits (HR) and a K in two innings of work. The press release for the game says he was injured, but it also mentioned that there was a rain delay right around the same time, so I don’t know if he just slipped or if he’s arm-hurt. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (3.32) pitched the next four innings and gave up two runs on five hits, a hit batter, and a walk against a K. RHP Aaron Jensen (4.31) allowed a walk and struck out one in the seventh, and then RHP Josh Lueke (0.00, W) allowed a hit and struck out three in the last two innings, ending up with the win as the Jaxx rallied for six runs in the ninth.
So let’s talk about that, shall we? It opened with a walk by 3B Alex Liddi (2B, HR, 2 R, 2-3, BB, .268), who was probably the night’s best hitter. A K later, Quiroz walked, then Savastano singled to load the bases, and LF Joe Dunigan (R, RBI, 1-3, BB, .185) and a pinch-hitting Limonta both drew walks to force in runs. Haveman hit a sac fly to give the Stars two outs, but then 2B Matt Lawson (HR, 3 RBI, 2-5, .353) hit a home run to clear the bases. Nine men, three outs, six runs. Efficient, those home runs.

Inland Empire 6 (LA – 4), High Desert 7
RHP Maikel Cleto (5.73) gave up five runs (four earned) through five frames of work after seven hits (HR), two wild pitches, three walks, and four Ks. If only he was as good as he was earlier in the year. LHP Brian Moran (3.38, W) allowed a hit over the next inning and two-thirds and then RHP Stephen Penney (2.58) had a run score against him on two hits and two Ks over the next inning of work. RHP Wes Littleton (2.19, S) scored that run with a couple of hits and a strikeout over the last four outs.
A few of the Mavs hitters reached three times, including SS Kyle Seager (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .336), DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2B, R, .367), 1B Rich Poythress (2B, RBI, .279), and C Ralph Henriquez (2B, 2 R, .318). Henriquez did it with three hits, where everyone else had two plus a walk. 2B Shaver Hansen (2B, 3B, R, RBI, .231) had a couple of hits, RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, 2 RBI, .295) continued the home run binge by hitting out his twenty-second and drawing a walk, and 3B Edilio Colina (2B, .300) doubled. Curiously, the Mavs were only 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

South Bend 6 (ARI - 7), Clinton 9
Perhaps the expectations ought to be adjusted just a smidge with LHP Nick Czyz (3.51, W). He won this time, certainly, but the start itself wasn’t quite as exciting as what he was doing early on in the year to the MWL. This time out, it was four runs on seven hits (HR), three walks, and three Ks, though he did manage to get through six innings of work. RHP Ryan Moorer (4.15) pitched the next inning and two-thirds and let a couple of unearned runs score on a hit and a hit batter, and then RHP Brandon Josselyn (2.92, S) allowed three hits and struck out one in the final inning and a third.
Both RF James Jones (3B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, SB, E, .246) and C Henry Contreras (2B, 2 RBI, .452) had three hits and a walk, Jones coming to within a double of hitting for the cycle. SS Nick Franklin (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .289) added two hits, including his seventeenth home run, which I guess would be his third home run in the previous six days. Actually, I didn’t guess, I looked that up.

Eugene 5 (SD - 4), Everett 8
I don’t know that I can claim a rivalry between the Emeralds and the Aquasox such as exists between their parent clubs. Woohoo, nonetheless. RHP Chris Sorce (3.79) weathered one of his rougher outings, with five runs allowed on six hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against seven Ks in five and two-thirds innings. RHP Fray Martinez (1.76, W), who ended up with the win, scored one of those after four hits and three Ks in two and a third innings. RHP Stephen Pryor (0.69, S) struck out one on his way to his third save.
There were two hits off the bats of both LF Robbie Anston (2B, R, 2 RBI, .278) and RF Kevin Rivers (2 2B, R, RBI, .314). Strangely, Anston and Rivers both have four doubles total, which was not what I expected. 2B Hawkins Gebbers (2B, R, RBI, .212) had a double and a walk.

Danville 13 (ATL + 2), Pulaski 7
The M’s scored the same number of runs. Danville didn’t. RHP Nolan Diaz (7.94, L) gave up ten runs (eight earned) on nine hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, a walk, a couple of hit batters, and three Ks. RHP Lance Abbott (3.86, E) then came on for two and a third innings and let three score on four hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk, with no Ks. LHP Bennett Whitmore (5.73) had two hits and two Ks over the last three.
RF James Wood (R, RBI, .286), C Larry Gonzalez (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .233), and DH Jake Schlander (2B, R, RBI, CS, .293) all had two hits, with Schlander drawing a walk. LF Jose Rivero (.390), on the other hand, just had two walks. SS Derek Poppert (2B, R, RBI, .246) added a double while leading off.

Aguirre Mariners 7, VSL Reds 5 (eleven innings)
Bonus baseball in the summer leagues! RHP Vicente Campos (4.09) had one of his Jekyll outings, with a run scoring after four hits, a hit batter, two walks, and five Ks in five+ innings. LHP Cruz Pereira (4.10), however, was off his game and scored both Campos’ run and three more of his own after six hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against one K in two and a third innings. RHP Reynaldo Sabala (3.41) ad to hold it there for the next three and two-thirds, limiting the Reds to a run on a hit, two wild pitches, and two walks against four Ks.
One run couldn’t do it in the tenth, so two had to suffice in the eleventh. Okuda singled, and then Michel bunted him to second. Not willing to take any chances, the pitcher walked LF Jesus Ugueto (3 R, 3-4, 2 BB, .315) to set up the DP. Things started out well enough, as Velasquez struck out, but then 2B Felipe Burin (2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, 2-5, .314) had to go and double and that drove both runners in. I try not to get too into summer league performances, but I think he’s pretty exciting as an 18-year-old switch hitting middle infielder. 3B Miguel Brito (R, 2 RBI, .273) added two singles and RF Alexy Palma (HR, 2 RBI, .269) had his third home run in the sixth.
