RHP Andy Baldwin (5.29) gave up eight runs on nine hits (HR), three walks, and seven Ks in five and two-thirds innings. Such is not enough to lose a game entirely in Vegas. RHP Anthony Varvaro (0.00) pitched the next two and a third innings, allowing a hit and striking out a pair, and then RHP Levale Speigner (4.83, BS, L) gave up two runs on four hits (HR) and a walk in the last third. Whoops.
RF David Winfree (2 R, RBI, PO, .304) had three hits, 1B Mike Carp (.255) had two, and SS Chris Woodward (R, E, .227), DH Matt Mangini (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .309), 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, 2 R, .284), and 2B Dustin Ackley (2 R, 2 RBI, E, .263) all had a hit and a walk. Eleventh home run for Mangini!
West Tenn 12, Huntsville 5 (MIL + 1)
So the D-Jaxx are good again? RHP Steven Hensley (3.26, W) was allowed to cruise a bit with the lead, giving up a run on six hits, a hit batter, and two walks against four Ks in six and a third innings. LHP Nick Hill (6.75) gave up two hits and struck out one in the next inning and two-thirds, but RHP Steven Richard (7.71) struggled in the ninth, as he let four runs score on five hits and a walk.
CF Brandon Haveman (2 R, .299), 2B Matt Lawson (HR, 4 RBI, .348), 1B Johan Limonta (R, .279), 3B Alex Liddi (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .270), C Guillermo Quiroz (.303), RF Nate Tenbrink (3B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .266), and LF Joe Dunigan (2B, 2 R, SB, .193) all had two hits, with Haveman adding two walks and Limonta and Dunigan adding walks. If you weren’t one of those seven hitters, you weren’t part of the Cool Kids Club.
Inland Empire 17 (LA – 3), High Desert 11
A fantastic way to end the homestand. RHP Cheyne Hann (7.05, L), of all candidates, was the starter and gave up seven runs on eight hits (HR) and two Ks in two and two-thirds innings. RHP Marwin Vega (11.97) scored two of those and nine of his own somehow after seven hits (3 HR!), a walk, and two Ks, and a hit batter which I guess got him ejected. RHP Blake Nation (5.30) scored two of Vega’s runs and one of his own on three hits and five Ks in three and a third innings and LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.15) allowed two hits in the ninth.
At least we have hitting to talk about? 1B Rich Poythress (2 HR, 7 RBI, E, .287) had a 4-for-4 night where he hit his seventeenth and eighteenth home runs and I miss having a home park where I can feel okay about getting excited about these kind of things. RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, 3 R, .296) had his twenty-third home run as well, and walked three times because he is terrifying. SS Edilio Colina (2 R, .308) had a xbh-less four hit night, 2B Kyle Seager (2 R, RBI, .340) had three hits and a walk, DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2B, R, 2 RBI, .360) and C Ralph Henriquez (2B, .306) both had doubles, with EM-E adding a walk, and LF Jake Shaffer (.323) and CF Maximo Mendez (R, SB, .212) both had two singles.
South Bend 4 (ARI - 6), Clinton 1
RHP Erasmo Ramirez (2.90, L) gave up four runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, a walk, and nine Ks in six and two-thirds innings. Earned runs suck. RHP Daniel Cooper (4.78) had a hit, a walk, and a K in the next inning and a third and then RHP Taylor Lewis (6.30) allowed a hit in the ninth.
1B Tim Morris (2B, R, .313) and DH Vinnie Catricala (2B, CS, .278) both had doubles and RF James Jones (2 SB, .248) had a single and a walk. Catricala’s caught stealing was of home. Even if Ramirez had pitched a little better, it doesn’t look like the offense would have supported him enough for the win.
Eugene 3 (SD - 5), Everett 4 (ten innings)
So the Aquasox clinched the first half title. I don’t know how much doubt there was in that. LHP Edlando Seco (3.49) had an unusually good start for him as far as command goes, walking two and striking out nine in five innings. He would also give up three runs (one earned) with the aid of three hits and a wild pitch. RHP Ogui Diaz (11.91) had two hits, a walk, and three Ks over the next two innings and then RHP Jonathan Arias (3.55) had a hit and two Ks in the following two frames. RHP Austin Hudson (3.18, W) pitched the ninth and got the win as the Sox walked off with it.
The tenth opened with RF Kevin Rivers (2 R, 1-2, 3 BB, A, .317) drawing a walk, and then Mailloux singling to move him to third. 3B Mickey Wiswall (2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2-4, BB, .273) was then intentionally walked to load the bases, which isn’t the brightest idea, I don’t think. Sharpley pinch-hit for Jacquot, which resulted in a K, but then Baron had an infield hit to drive in the winning run. SS Anyhony Phillips (HR, .222) added two hits from the bottom of the order, which included his second dinger, and 2B Hawkins Gebbers (.216) had a hit and a walk.
Danville 7 (ATL + 1), Pulaski 8 (twelve innings)
Hey, a slightly different number of runs scored. RHP Jesse Nava (6.51) gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits, four wild pitches, a hit batter, and three walks against six Ks in five innings. Sooooo… semi-effectively wild? LHP Ryan Kiel (3.65) let three runs score on three hits, two walks, and a K in an inning+, then RHP Tim Griffin (7.90) took over for two frames, scoring one of Kiel’s runners and one unearned run of his own on three hits and two Ks. RHP Matthew Bischoff (1.53) allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out four over the next three, because he’s the relief ace, and then RHP Bryan Leigh (0.87, W) rung up one in the ninth.
Runs! After a strikeout to open the twelfth, 3B Ramon Morla (2 R, SB, 2-6, .310) singled, LF Jose Rivero (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, 2-5, BB, E, .391) walked, Morla stole third on a K and then Rivero got second just before RF James Wood (R, 2 RBI, SB, 2-4, BB, .295) singled. 2B Jorge Agudelo (3B, R, RBI, CS, .316) and C Larry Gonzalez (2B, 2 RBI, .229) both had an extra-base hit and DH Derek Poppert (R, .233) and 1B Matt Browning (R, .000), up from Peoria, both had a couple of walks.
Peoria Mariners 5, AZL Athletics 6
RHP Eric Valdez (9.00, L) got another three innings in and gave up five runs on seven hits, a hit batter, and two walks against two Ks. LHP Matt Petiton (1.80) gave up a run on four hits and a wild pitch while striking out four in the next three frames, and then RHP Michael Aviles (10.32) had a hit, a walk, and two Ks in the last two.
1B Ji-man Choi (RBI, .433) and 3B Jose Martinez (R, .149) both had a hit and two walks. Similar results, very different hitters. LF Michael Acevedo (RBI, .324) and RF Guillermo Pimentel (R, RBI, PO, .232) both had two hits, DH Jose Flores (2B, R, .255) doubled, and 2B Carlos Ramirez (R, 2 RBI, SB, .295) had a single and a walk.
Aguirre Mariners 3, VSL Pirates 4 (twelve innings)
Bonus baseball again! This wasn’t so good, as seems to be the case whenever we face the Pirates, who are the only team that’s ahead of us. RHP Ivan Julio (2.38) let three score on seven hits (HR), a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and four Ks in the first three+ innings, and was followed by RHP Isliexel Gonzalez (4.26), who pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed four hits, hit a batter, walked two, and rung up four. RHP Maikol Guaipe (3.15) let the winning run score after two hits and three walks in the final inning and two-thirds.
3B Felipe Burin (R, E, .331) collected four hits in the game. All were singles, but there was only one extra-base hit in the game, which went to LF Reginald Lampe (2B, PO, .315), who had two hits, as did DH Miguel Brito (RBI, .279), CF Jesus Ugueto (RBI, .313) had a single and a walk leading off.
DSL Cardinals 0, Yamasa Mariners 5
LHP Henry Perez (0.51, W) was back to his typical outings and went six innings this time, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out seven. RHP Junior Nunez (0.84) pitched the next two and a third innings, giving up a couple of hits and striking out one, and then LHP Wander Marte (15.43) struck out both of the batters that he faced.
The offense featured something different for the league, which is to say 3B Jordy Lara (2 HR, 5 RBI, .168) hit two home runs in a game, including a grand slam. Multi-home run games are uncommon enough, but there it might happen once a season. CF Randy Perez (R, SB, CS, A, .2640 added two hits and a walk, RF Janelfry Zorilla (2B, .279) and C Ivan Brea (2B, .197) both doubled, 2B George Soto (R, .198) had a hit and a walk, and PH-DH Miguel Sanchez (R, .143) walked twice.
