Surprise! RHP Yoervis Medina (0.00, W) got the start and wasn’t awful, going five and two-thirds innings and allowing three hits and four walks while striking out four. It’s rare that a NWL pitcher comes over and does so competently. RHP Anthony Varvaro (3.27) allowed two runs to score on two hits and a K in the next inning and a third, then RHP Josh Lueke (0.00, E, S) pitched the last two innings, allowing a hit and striking out four. He might be in the M’s ‘pen by year’s end.
DH Mike Sweeney (RBI, SB, .324) went 1-for-1 with three walks and stole a base and you guys, Mike Sweeney stole a base! Anyway. RF Mike Wilson (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .303) had three hits and I don’t know why he’s batting ninth. In addition to Wilson, 3B Matt Mangini (HR, .298) and CF Gregory Halman (HR, .259) both had home runs and 1B Justin Smoak (2B, R, RBI, .296) doubled in his first game as a Rainier. I don’t mind him being down there because he has the fewest ABs at the minor league level of any ’08 draftee save Gordon Beckham. But I’ve noted this elsewhere before? C Eliezer Alfonzo (.254) had a single and a walk.
West Tenn 1, Tennessee 9 (CHC + 7)
Well that was not fun. RHP Steve Hensley (3.89, L) lost it as he lasted only two and two-thirds innings having given up seven runs on eight hits (HR), two hit batters, and two walks. I wonder about his elbow. RHP Steven Richard (5.68) allowed a couple of hits and struck out two in the next two and a third innings, scoring one of Hensley’s runs in the process. LHP Nick Hill (5.40) allowed three hits in then ext two innings, and RHP Luis Munoz (4.36) gave up two runs on two hits (HR) in the eighth.
RF Nate Tenbrink (SB, .287) had three singles in the game and CF Brandon Haveman (2B, .295) and C Guillermo Quiroz (2B, .278) both doubled, with Quiroz drawing a walk. Triunfel got ejected in the Smokies’ half of the first. I’m sure there’s a story behind that.
Rancho Cucamonga 4 (ANA + 6), High Desert 3
Close? RHP Kenn Kasparek (3.17, L) gave up three runs on three hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against five Ks in seven innings. LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.07) gave up another solo shot and one more hit to go with a K in the last two innings. I like dingers less when they happen to us.
It was mostly singles with the occasional double for the Mavs, as RF Johermyn Chavez (R, RBI, .315), 3B Rich Poythress (2B, R, .305), and C Trevor Coleman (.207) all had three hits, and 2B Kyle Seager (2B, R, SB, .343), SS Edilio Colina (.291), and LF Kuo-hui Lo (RBI, .296) all had two hits.
Clinton 10, Wisconsin 0 (MIL - 4)
Lumberkings SMASH. Chris Mehring couldn’t have been happy about this. RHP Erasmo Ramirez (2.51, W) plowed through six and two-thirds innings allowing six hits, two hit batters, and a walk while striking out four. LHP Jose Jimenez (2.47) allowed one hit and struck out three pitching through the eighth, and RHP Brandon Josselyn (3.35) struck out one in the ninth.
C Blake Ochoa (HR, 3 RBI, .317) continued to prove he doesn’t really need to be in the MWL, hitting his fourth home run and walking three times. Those reaching three times included RF James Jones (2 R, .248), with a hit and two walks, 2B Nick Franklin (3B, 2 R, RBI, .289), with a couple of hits and a walk, and CF Matt Cerione (2B, HR, 2 R, SB, A, .238) who had three hits. Cerione and Ochoa both have four dingers now. DH Luis Nunez (R, CS, .291) and SS Gabriel Noriega (2B, R, .261) each had two hits.
Everett 3, Tri-City 2 (COL 0)
With their usual guy in Tacoma, RHP Austin Hudson (2.19, E) had to get the start, and he let an unearned run score on a hit, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks while striking out one in four innings. LHP Jason Markovitz (3.57, W) pitched the next four frames and also had an unearned run, his coming on two hits and five Ks. RHP Jonathan Arias (3.06, S) hit one and struck out one in the ninth.
CF Robbie Anston (2B, R, SB, .289) had two hits and 2B Hawkins Gebbers (2B, RBI, 2 E, .205) had a double.
Pulaski’s game was canceled?
Peoria Mariners 2, AZL Indians 8
Crushed. RHP Dylan Unsworth (4.21, L) took the loss as he gave up six runs (five earned) on ten hits, a wild pitch, and two Ks in four and a third innings. RHP Luke Taylor (7.56) got the next two and two-thirds and let two score on three hits, two wild pitches, a hit batter, and three walks against two Ks. LHP Kody Kurowski (8.10) had an uneventful ninth. Three groundballs are pretty cool though.
2B Patrick Brady (2B, .147) doubled. That’s good. Four errors and a passed ball were not. Two outfield assists were good though. I suppose it comes out fundamentally positive.
Aguirre Mariners 2, VSL Cardinals 0 (seven innings)
The M’s are pretty good when they don’t have to face the Pirates. But then playoffs… Anyway, RHP Vicente Campos (3.27, W) was Jekyll this time and allowed just three hits and a walk over six innings while striking out eight. RHP Maikol Guaipe (3.09, S) walked one and struck out one in the seventh.
2B Felipe Burin (R, .331) and CF Alexy Palma (CS, .265) both walked twice. They are the future. SS Roberto Velasquez (CS, .293) had two singles. I guess he’s all right.
Aguirre Mariners 6, VSL Cardinals 4 (seven innings)
LHP Cruz Pereira (3.43, W) somehow weathered giving up two of three hits as home runs, leading to four runs overall through six and a third innings along with a wild pitch, a hit batter, four walks, and three strikeouts. RHP Daniel Mata (5.56, S) had a hit, a walk, and a K in the last two-thirds.
No extra-base hits for the M’s, and yet the Lots of Singles approach seemed to work for them. DH Felipe Burin (R, RBI, .337) and 2B Yidid Batista (R, RBI, .261) both had two hits and RF Alexy Palma (R, RBI, .267) had a hit and a walk.
Yamasa Mariners 2, DSL Cardinals 3
I don’t know when this was posted save that it was after 3 am EDT. So. LHP Henry Perez (0.62) had an unusually bad start for him, which is to say that he gave up a run in five innings after three hits, a wild pitch, two walks, and five Ks. RHP Noel de la Cruz (3.38, L) let another couple of unearned runs socre on two hits and two walks while striking out one in the next two and two thirds before LHP Leoncio Munoz (3.65) induced a groundout from the final batter. We lost on unearned runs, but we also gained the lead on the same.
1B-3B Rudy van Heydoorn (2 E, .306) had a single and two walks. It may just be my memory messing with me, but it doesn’t seem like he’s caught many games recently. CF Janelfry Zorilla (.274) had two singles and RF Efrain Nunez (SB, .169) had a single and a walk.
DSL Athletics 1, Yamasa Mariners 2
LHP Brandol Perez (0.30) pitched four inning and gave up two hits and two walks while striking out eight. So I guess he’s starting now. RHP Gregorio Aquino (3.42, W) got the piggyback and went the next four, allowing a hit, hitting one, walking two, and striking out one. RHP Yunior de Jesus (1.91, S) saved wit with two hits, a walk, and two Ks turning into a run in the ninth.
RF Efrain Nunez (RBI, .189) had three hits out of the leadoff spot. 2B Luis Matias (R, .232) and 1B Rudy van Heydoorn (.315) both had two hits, with van Heydoorn adding a walk, and 3B Jordy Lara (2B, RBI, .180) doubled and walked. Mostly it was the one through four doing the heavy lifting.
