Tacoma 12, Sacramento 3 (OAK - 3)
Take that, John Halama. Well, pitching first. LHP Luke French (1.93, W) won his sixth giving up three runs through eight innings on seven hits (HR), a plunked batter, a walk, and four Ks. RHP Levale Speigner (8.27) struck out one in the ninth.
RF Gregory Halman (2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 7 RBI, 2 A, .239) had two home runs in the game, both of them with two outs and bookending the scoring for the Rainiers. He also had two outfield assists. Good golly. DH Tommy Everidge (HR, 3 R, .271), 1B Mike Carp (2 R, .238), C Guillermo Quiroz (3 R, RBI, .361), 3B Matt Mangini (HR, 2 RBI, .312), and CF Ezequiel Carrera (.256) all had two hits. Mangini has seven home runs, which is one more than Everidge and one shy of tying his total for the entire 2008 season. LF Mike Wilson (2B, RBI, .275) added a double.
West Tenn 5, Chattanooga 2 (LA - 8)
RHP Michael Pineda (2.20, W) pitched seven innings and gave up a run on four hits, a walk, and four Ks and I thought about complaining in the same way one might complain about Felix not throwing no-hitters all the time but then I thought, “screw it”. RHP Luis Munoz (3.55) had a hit and a K in the eighth and in the ninth, RHP Anthony Varvaro (3.09) let a run score on a hit, a walk, and two Ks. After having a 15/8 K/BB in 9.2 innings in May, Varvaro had a 12/4 in 12.2 innings of May. Surely, something is happening.
1B Johan Limonta (2B, R, .293), DH Kuo-hui Lo (R, .256), and RF Leury Bonilla (RBI, .225) all had two hits in the game, and LF Carlos Peguero (2B, R, RBI, .307), 3B Alex Liddi (2B, RBI, .273), and C Jose Yepez (2B, R, RBI, .333) all had doubles, with Peguero drawing two walks and Yepez getting one. CF Brandon Haveman (R, RBI, .364) had a single and a walk. He was leading off too. A player that had seen all of three games outside of short-season was leading off for the D-Jaxx. I hope he succeeds because I think that’s neat.
High Desert 5, Lake Elsinore 1 (SD + 16)
We took the series from a team that was running away with the division? PLAYOFFS! RHP Maikel Cleto (3.38) had a run score against him on two hits, a walk, and four Ks in three frames of work. Following him, LHP Anthony Vasquez (2.84, W) gave up three hits, hit a batter, handed out a couple of free passes, and rung up four in the final six innings of work. That’s a fine piggyback start right there.
2B Kyle Seager (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .325) and LF Dennis Raben (3B, R, .370) both had two hits in the game, with Raben drawing a walk. SS Juan Diaz (2B, R, .2920 and DH Shaver Hansen (2B, 2 R, RBI, .118) both had a double and a walk in the game.
Clinton 2, Bowling Green 7 (TB - 8)
Today, we played against one of two teams that transferred into the league in the offseason. So that happened. I’d rather talk about that because RHP Taylor Lewis (5.40, E, L) was not pitching well and let seven earned runs score on eleven hits (2 HR!), two hit batters and one K through five and two-thirds innings. I think he puts the ball in play a bit much. RHP Daniel Cooper (3.86) took it the rest of the way and struck out one.
RF James Jones (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .215) had another two extra-base hits, which is getting to be normal-ish for him. 1B Vinnie Catricala (2B, R, .272) and 3B Mario Martinez (.228) both had a hit and a walk.
