Fresno 10 (SF + 18), Tacoma 11
Win? RHP Andy Baldwin (4.28) let nine runs score on eleven hits (HR), a walk, and a lone K in four and two-thirds innings. None of those were earned. Que? RHP Brian Sweeney (2.51) pitched the next three anda third innings and let a run score on four hits and two Ks. His run was earned. RHP Levale Speigner (7.43) allowed a hit, chucked a wild pitch, and struck out a pair in the final two innings.
Since the winning run came in the ninth, I’ll run that down. Quiroz singled to open things, then Mangini walked. Despite the usual reservations one would have about running a catcher, Daren Brown nonetheless replaced Mangini with Anthony Phillips, who wound up back on the roster. RF Mike Wilson (2B, 3 R, RBI, 1-2, 2 BB, .261) was hit by a pitch, and that got the bases juiced for CF Ezequiel Carrera (2 RBI, 2 A, 2-4), who singled. Quiroz scored, and Phillips was out at home on the throw. LF Chris Woodward (2B, R, RBI, 1-5, BB, .227) was walked intentionally to set up the DP, but then 2B-SS Jack Hannahan (3 RBI, 3-6, .209) singled and that ended it. Before Quiroz came in, C Adam Moore (2B, 2 R, RBI, .556) had a 4-for-4 night behind the late, which explains exactly why it was Mangini that was run for. 1B Brad Nelson (HR, 3 R, .284) added three hits and DH Tommy Everidge (HR, .248) had two plus a walk. It was the seventh home run for Everidge and the fifth for Nelson.

West Tenn 7, Tennessee 5 (CHC + 12)
Well, shoot. RHP Michael Pineda (2.43, W) was not exactly on game as he gave up five runs (four earned) on ten hits, a walk, and three Ks, though he still lasted six innings, only throwing seventy-seven pitches. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2.39) allowed two hits, hit one, and struck out one in the next inning and two-thirds, then RHP Anthony Varvaro (2.70) closed it out, walking one.
3B Alex Liddi (HR, 4 RBI, .301), 1B Johan Limonta (HR, .308), and SS Carlos Triunfel (HR, 3 R, .288) all had home runs in the game, six, seven, and five respectively, with Liddi and Triunfel having those as one of two hits to go with a walk. Hitter of the Week may be closer than I initially thought. 2B Dustin Ackley (R, .246) had two singles.

High Desert 1, Visalia 3 (ARI - 1) (eleven innings)
Well, that’s no fun. LHP Anthony Vasquez (2.25, PO), freed for the moment from his piggyback duties, gave up a run on eight hits (HR) and four Ks in eight frames of work. RHP Blake Nation (5.08) kept it at the one run, with a hit, a walk, and two strikeouts in the next two innings, but then RHP Cheyne Hann (5.76, L) let two plate on two hits (HR) and two Ks in the tenth.
DH Dennis Raben (2B, .386) and CF Denny Almonte (2B, .300) both had two hits in the game, and 1B Rich Poythress (.287) and SS Juan Diaz (R, .289), two walks. The Mavericks were joined today by RF Eddy Martinez-Esteve. You may remember him as the team’s unsigned third-round pick from 2002.

Fort Wayne 10 (SD - 1), Clinton 4
The second outing by RHP John Housey (2.70, L), not so good, as he allowed five runs (four earned) to score on six hits, a walk, and a K in an inning and two-thirds. RHP Taylor Lewis (6.33) also had issues, with four runs scoring in three innings after five hits, two walks, and two Ks. RHP Daniel Cooper (4.40) also had issues, with a run scoring against him on three hits, a walk, and couple of strikeouts in the two and two-thirds innings that followed, but nothing more, as RHP Jorden Merry (6.75) closed it out with a hit, a free pass, and three Ks in the last inning and two-thirds.
DH Wellingotn Dotel (2 3B, 3 RBI, .288) had three hits in the game, including a pair of triples. It’s not quite the cycle, but it is something you don’t see every day. 3B Vinnie Catricala (2B, 2 R, .298) and 2B Gabriel Noriega (2B, RBI, .229) both had two hits in the game.

VSL Cardinals 0, Aguirre Mariners 1 (five innings)
Rain made this one official a little early. RHP Vicente Campos (0.95) pitched five frames and allowed two hits, two wild pitches, and two walks while striking out nine. So, nearly half of the batters Campos faced struck out.
SS Roberto Velasquez (2B, .324) managed to go 2-for-2, and DH Felipe Burin (.313), 1-for-1 with a walk.

DSL Athletics 4, Yamasa Mariners 3
Yesterday’s game. RHP Oliver Garcia (1.69) let an unearned run score on a hit, a wild pitch, a hit batter, four walks, and two Ks. So, command troubles… RHP Domingo Brazoban (3.00, E) let two more unearned runs score on two hits, a walk, and a K in the next two and a two-thirds innings. I’d say that falls under defensive problems. And LHP Martin Abad (1.80, L) walking one and striking out two in the final three innings and having that one run come around to score? I don’t know what jurisdiction that falls under but it’s not a good one.
The offense got a double and a walk from, surprise, C Rudy van Heydoorn (2B, RBI, 2 PB, .345), again, and two hits off the bat of DH Janelfry Zorilla (2B, 2 RBI, .269).

DSL Brewers 10, Yamasa Mariners 11 (fourteen innings)
Extra summer baseball! Woo? RHP Jochi Ogando (3.86) let four runs (two earned) score on three hits, a walk, and four Ks in four innings of work. RHP Yunior de Jesus (0.00) was perfect over the next three and struck out three. Things turned bad as LHP Wander Marte (INF) took the mound and had two hits, two wild pitches, and two walks without recording an out. This was compounded by RHP Enrique Rosario (7.36) helping all those runners to score (came in with the bases loaded) along with two of his own after two hits and a walk. RHP Junior Nunez (0.00, BS) scored one of Rosario’s runs and had a hit, a walk, and two Ks in two and a third innings, then LHP Henry Perez (0.00, PO, E, W) took over and had two hits, a walk, and four strikeouts through the final four and a third innings. It’s like a doubleheader in a single game.
2B George Soto (2B, CS, E, .162) had four hits in the game. If he keeps doing that, he might be promoted again. SS Noe Berro (2 R, SB, 3 E, .241) also reached four times in the leadoff spot with a hit and three walks. We also had a couple of hits from 1B Bertin Sanon (2B, RBI, CS, .270), 3B Jordy Lara (HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .156), C Rudy van Heydoorn (2 2B, 2 R, RBI, PB, .364), and CF Janelfry Zorilla (HR, 3 RBI, .281), with van Heydoorn adding a walk. DH Axel Wel (R, RBI, .176) had a single and two walks.
