Tacoma 7, Colorado Springs 0 (COL - 4)
Two of the last three starts by LHP Chris Seddon (3.66, W) have been complete game shutouts. This time, it was one-hundred seventeen pitches, four hits, two walks, and six Ks. I suppose years ago this would be more commonplace, but in our era of baseball, this is surprising and quite unexpected.
1B Brad Nelson (2B, .290), 3B Matt Mangini (R, .303), and LF Ezequiel Carrera (2B, R, 2 RBI, .265) all had a couple of hits in the game, and SS Chris Woodward (2B, R, RBI, .236) and RF Mike Wilson (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .269) both had an extra-base hit and a walk. It was the seventh home run for Wilson. He’ll have to start hitting for a higher average before I start wondering if this is the year for him though, and besides that, the outfield seems pretty set at the moment.
San Jose 15 (SF + 18), High Desert 11
As was the case in the last start, RHP Andrew Carraway (4.85) didn’t do so hot, giving up eight runs on thirteen hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against five Ks in the same number of innings. RHP Blake Nation (5.55, L) gave up three more on five hits and a walk against one K in the next two innings. RHP Steven Richard (4.30) let four more plate after three hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk in the ninth. That home run went to the same batter that Carraway gave up his to.
You want more dingers? We had six of them, as if to say, not in our house, or something. I don’t know. I miss getting excited about Cal League home runs. DH Dennis Raben (2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 3-4, BB, .392) and CF Denny Almonte (2 HR, 3 RBI, 2-5, .305) both had two leave the park, and 1B Rich Poythress (HR, 3 RBI, 1-5, .292) and RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, E, .290) both had one. 3B Edilio Colina (3 R, .307) and SS Juan Diaz (.302) both had two hits and a walk, and C Trevor Coleman (R, .200) had a single and a walk. That covers everyone who reached base.
Wisconsin 8 (MIL - 18), Clinton 1
RHP Taylor Stanton (3.51, L) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits, a walk, and four Ks in five and two-thirds innings. He’s walked three in his last two starts. Sound the alarms! LHP Jose Jimenez (2.54) let three more (two earned) score on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk against one K in the next inning and a third+. LHP Brian Moran (1.67) walked one and struck out one in the eighth, which I am disappointed in both for its brevity and the walk, and RHP John Housey (2.88) gave up a solo home run and struck out one in the ninth.
3B Vinnie Catricala (2B, .302) doubled. That’s all I have.
VSL Rays 5, Aguirre Mariners 6 (seven innings)
RHP Daniel Mata (3.77) got another start, which did not go so well, as he allowed five runs (two earned) to score on four hits and two walks in just two innings. Following him, RHP Jose Mendoza (4.32, W) threw four innings without a strikeout, though he did have a hit and a walk. He’s no Steve Bray, that’s for sure. RHP Ricardo Pereira (2.61, S) allowed a hit and struck out one in the seventh.
1B Ivan Ramirez (2 R, .324) had three hits in the game. Like Acevedo, I just wish he were promoted already, but multiple years in the summer leagues does not equate to a non-prospect status, as Luis Valbuena and Wladimir Balentien both proved in years past. DH Felipe Burin (2B, 2 RBI, PO, .286) had a couple of hits and SS Roberto Velasquez (2B, E, .310) and C Franklin Diaz (2B, R, RBI, .250) both had doubles, with Diaz adding a walk.
VSL Rays 5, Aguirre Mariners 3 (seven innings)
RHP Jesus Pirela (6.00, L) took the loss as he gave up three runs (two earned) after two hits, a hit batter, a pair of walks, and a K in two+ innings. RHP Jose Flores (1.72) scored one of those and two unearned runs of his own on five hits, a walk, and three Ks in the next three frames, before giving way to RHP Mayckol Guaipe (4.19), to allowed a hit and struck out three in the final two.
DH Ivan Ramirez (.338) had another two hits and a walk, but I’ve already talked about him. C Ricardo Gonzalez (E, .105) walked twice and I don’t think I’ve ever talked about him before.
DSL Cardinals 0, Yamasa Mariners 4
RHP Ambioris Hidalgo (3.86, W) allowed no runs in six innings after five hits, a couple of plunked batters, two walks, and four Ks. Hooray! LHP Martin Abad (1.38, S) allowed two hits, hit one, and struck out four in the final three innings.
DH Efrain Nunez (3B, HR, 3 RBI, .148) had two extra-base hits in the game, which is kind of a big deal. Of course, considering the typical approach taken by most summer league hitters, so is 3B Jordy Lara (R, .216) going 1-for-1 with three walks, or LF George Drullard (R, CS, .161) going 1-for-2 with two walks. C Ivan Brea (RBI, .174) had a single and a walk.
