Tacoma 2, Sacramento 6 (OAK + 1)
RHP Andy Baldwin (5.04, L) had five runs score against him on five hits (HR), a hit batter, a walk, and seven Ks in five and a third innings. That’s unlucky. RHP Mike Koplove (4.72) scored one of those and one of his own as he allowed four hits and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning. It would be different if he scored more of Baldwin’s runs. LHP Billy Traber (0.00) gave up a hit in the seventh and RHP Joe Nelson (10.80) walked one in the eighth.
CF Gregory Halman (HR, 2 RBI, .241) hit his fourteenth home run in the fourth inning and also struck out twice in the game. C Adam Moore (.429) pitched in another two hits and SS Chris Woodward (.230) and 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (.347) both had a hit and a walk.
West Tenn 3, Montgomery 5 (TB + 1)
Whatever was working for RHP Dan Cortes (5.59) the past few times out definitely wasn’t today, as he let three runs score on three hits (HR), four wild pitches, and seven walks against two Ks. Either that or he was storing it all up for this occasion. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2.56, L) pitched the next two and two-thirds and had two runs (one earned) score against him on four hits and two Ks. LHP Nick Hill (8.44) struck out a pair in the inning and two-thirds that followed and then RHP Steve Palazzolo (7.71) had a hit, a wild pitch, a walk, and two Ks in the ninth. Two strikeouts for everyone!
DH Johan Limonta (HR, 2 RBI, .294) had a home run and a walk, 2B Dustin Ackley (3B, R, .250) had a triple and a walk, and LF Carlos Peguero (2B, R, RBI, .298) doubled.
Inland Empire 14 (LA – 1), High Desert 10
The Sixers can hit sometimes, I just wish they weren’t doing it against us. RHP Kenn Kasparek (3.18, L) took his second loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits (2 HR!), two walks, and only one K. Kasparek will have great difficulty surviving at this level without strikeouts. RHP Chris Kirkland (18.00) gave up four runs on four hits (2 HR!), a hit batter, and a wild pitch against two Ks. Joining in on the festivities, RHP Blake Nation (5.77) also let three runs score on four hits (HR) and a K. RHP Stephen Penney (3.19) only struck out one in the eighth, and didn’t allow a home run. RHP Wes Littleton (3.00) did, one of three hits and a K in the ninth, though the home run was a solo shot.
The Sixers had six home runs. The Mavericks had one. Lame. The home run we did have was the only hit for RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, .289), but hey, he has thirteen of those things now. Maybe instead I should highlight LF Jake Shaffer (2B, 3B, 2 RBI, A, .294) who was a home run away from cycling and had an assist at second. For the rest of the lineup, you have 3B Kyle Seager (2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .308), SS Edilio Colina (3 R, .307), DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve (3 RBI, .342), CF Denny Almonte (2 R, .294), and 2B Shaver Hansen (2B, R, .192) all with two hits, Colina adding the team’s only walk, and 1B Rich Poythress (2B, .294) and C Blake Ochoa (2B, R, RBI, .385) adding doubles. That’s everyone, but with the loss, it feels kind of empty.
Beloit 1 (MIN 0), Clinton 6
Turnabout, I suppose. LHP Nick Czyz (0.68, W) got a rare start and did pretty well with it, allowing one run to score on three hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while he struck out seven RHP Taylor Lewis (5.34) pitched a third+ after that, with two hits, two walks, and a K. LHP Brian Moran (1.41) took over for another two innings and had two hits and two strikeouts before giving way to RHP John Housey (3.93) for the ninth.
1B Tim Morris (HR, 3 RBI, .279) and CF Daniel Carroll (HR, 3 R, .276) both had two hits in the game, including home runs, the fourth for Carroll and the third for Morris. Carroll also drew a walk. 2B Gabriel Noriega (.226) had three singles, DH Luis Nunez (.308) had two, and SS Nick Franklin (R, RBI, .294) and RF James Jones (2 CS, .204) both had a hit and a walk. Walks! For Franklin!
Everett 6, Spokane 2 (TEX - 6)
Win streak over? No big: start a new one. RHP Chris Sorce (3.75, W) got his first W of the year by going six innings and allowing two runs to score on seven hits, a hit batter, and six Ks. RHP Forrest Snow (0.00, S) was perfect through the last three and struck out three as well.
The six runs were less about an excess of hitting and more about managing to do it right. LF Jose Rivero (3B, R, RBI, .250) was easily the top performer, with a triple and two walks, accounting for the team’s only extra-base hit, but he was the only one that was really at that level. Otherwise, you had 3B Kevin Mailloux (2 R, .238) with two hits and RF Kevin Rivers (R, RBI, .387) with a hit and a walk. Call it a team effort.
Burlington 2 (KC- 3), Pulaski 6
RHP Richard Vargas (1.80, W) threw five innings and gave up two runs (one earned) after three hits, a couple of walks, and five Ks. He was only in the DL for a year, so perhaps he has some potential. On the other hand, Pineda was there for two years, so it’s kind of hard to tell sometimes. RHP Yovanny Olivero (1.29, S) got a four-inning save with four hits and a walk against two Ks. I think that’s the second time this week we’ve seen a four-inning save. Olivero seems to be in the position of getting innings close to a starter without being one.
Today, 3B Ramon Morla (HR, 2 RBI, .556) was not the top hitter, as he merely had his second home run of the year. Instead, it was probably RF James Wood (3 2B, 2 R, .600), who had three doubles, though you could give a little credit to PH-DH Andrew Giobbi (RBI, CS, 1.000) for going 3-for-3 in his pro debut. More worrisome is that he replaced Morban at DH and I really would like it if Morban was not only getting at-bats but also playing the field. SS Jetsy Extrano (HR, 2 R, SB, E, .286) had two hits leading off, including his first home run, and LF Jorge Agudelo (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .389) had a pair of doubles.
AZL Angels 5, Peoria Mariners 7 (ten innings)
LHP Erik Bedard (2.70) gave up a run on three hits and struck out eight in four frames of work. Huzzah! RHP Seon-gi Kim (7.71) got the next four+ and let five runs plate after six hits and seven Ks. Sort of good! RHP Danny Cruz Ayala (0.00, W) scored one of those, and had three hits, a wild pitch, and a balk in two innings of work, but also struck out four. The arm program he was on may have worked.
C Ji-man Choi (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .667) kept hitting and had another four in this game. LF Guillermo Pimentel (2B, R, RBI, E, .267) added three hits, SS Danny Lopez (R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, .313), and 2B Carlos Ramirez (2B, RBI, .214), 1B Jose Flores (2B, R, E, .400), 3B Matt Browning (2B, RBI, .154), and RF Robert Rodriguez (2B, R, .250) all had doubles, with Flores and Ramirez adding walks.
VSL Cardinals 6, Aguirre Mariners 12
Offense! Not so much pitching! RHP Kevin Quintanilla (3.78) got an actual start, but ended up allowing two runs to score after two hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, five walks, and two Ks in three and two-thirds innings. LHP Oscar Bravo (4.26, W) got the final out of the fourth to leave the bases juiced, and then had four (three earned) score against him after three hits, a hit batter, and two walks in an inning and a third. LHP Cruz Pereira (4.85, S) also managed a four-innings save (that’s three now) after allowing four hits and a walk while striking out two. He also scored two of Bravo’s runs.
For all the offense though, there weren’t that many extra-base hits, just three total. DH Jesus Ugueto (2B, 3 R, .323) had one of the doubles while going 3-for-4 with a walk. LF Kenny Hart (3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, A, E, .293) and 3B Miguel Brito (2B, R, 3 RBI, E, .253) had the other two, with two hits apiece, adding a walk for Hart. SS Roberto Velasquez (3 R, RBI, .317) had two hits and two walks, whereas C Ricardo Gonzalez (PB, .133) just had a hit and one walk.
DSL Athletics 6, Yamasa Mariners 4 (seven innings)
RHP Ambioris Hidalgo (5.04, L) didn’t get the win because he didn’t get an out, despite facing seven batters. Three hits were allowed, four free passes were handed out, and RHP Oliver Garcia (1.08) managed to strand one of them as he pitched the next three innings allowing just two hits, a walk, and two Ks. RHP Gregorio Aquino (11.37) was next up for a similar stint and he had a hit, two walks, and two Ks to his line. LHP Wander Marte (21.60) had the same totals, minus a hit and adding a wild pitch, in two-thirds of an inning pitch before RHP Enrique Rosario (6.00) got the final out.
RF Efrain Nunez (HR, 2 RBI, .151) getting his second home run of the season was probably the most exciting part of the game. There was also C Ivan Brea (R, .213) getting two hits and 1B Rudy van Heydoorn (RBI, .356) getting a single and a walk, I guess.
Yamasa Mariners 0, DSL Athletics 2 (seven innings)
RHP Joan Vizcaino (2.21, L) pitched four and a third innings and gave up a couple of unearned runs after six hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and four Ks. RHP Junior Nunez (0.00), who apparently is not required to pitch on the same day as de Jesus, struck out two in the last inning and two-thirds.
1B Westlonder Marcelino (2B, .263) had a double and a walk in the game and I think that’s the first time I’ve gotten to type out that magnificent name all season.
