Tacoma 3, Sacramento 8 (OAK + 2)
RHP Ian Snell (4.00, L) couldn’t string two good outings together, as he was pulled after four innings having given up four runs on five hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, four walks, and three Ks. RHP Levale Speigner (5.87) let four more (one earned) score on six hits and three Ks in the next two and a third innings before RHP Mike Koplove (4.45) wrapped things up, a hit and a K to his line. During Speigner’s start to the fifth inning, there was a ground out, two singles, and a reach on error that Daren Brown had so much to say about, it got him ejected.
C Josh Bard (HR, 2 RBI, .235) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run off former Mariner John Halama. Two others, 1B Brad Nelson (R, .289) and DH Adam Moore (RBI, .462), also reached three times, Nelson on two hits and a walk and Moore on three singles.
West Tenn 2, Montgomery 6 (TB + 2)
RHP Steve Bray (3.44, L) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits, a hit batter, and two Ks in five and two-thirds innings of work. Credit three of those to LHP Edward Paredes (3.41), who allowed three hits and managed to score a run of his own before recording an out. RHP Luis Munoz (3.80) and RHP Anthony Varvaro (2.84) split the last two frames, Munoz having a hit and a walk, Varvaro with the same plus a run and a walk.
LF Nate Tenbrink (HR, SB, .270) hit his third double-A home run, stole a base, and drew a walk. He’s still good even at double-A. CF-3B Leury Bonilla (2B, E, .226), 3B-1B Alex Liddi (2B, RBI, .281), and C Jose Yepez (2B, .330) all had doubles, Bonilla drawing a walk, and 2B Dustin Ackley (R, .250) had a single and a walk.
Inland Empire 14 (LA 0), High Desert 2
Cripes. RHP Maikel Cleto (6.12, L) let five (three earned) score after six hits, a couple of hit batters, a pair of walks, and four Ks in four and two-thirds innings. RHP Marwin Vega (8.22, L) pitched an inning after that and managed to let five more score after five hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk, then RHP Cheyne Hann (5.86) came one to score one of those and four of his own on five hits (HR) and two Ks in an inning and a third. Blarg. At least RHP Blake Nation (5.49) got through two innings without allowing anyone to reach, striking out one along the way.
The runs came via solo shots by CF Denny Almonte (HR, E, .293) and RF Johermyn Chavez (HR, .289), who also had a walk. It was the twelfth home run for Almonte and the fourteenth by Chavez. PH-C Carlton Tanabe (3B, .500) had a triple in one of his two at-bats. It’s good to see him actually playing instead of hanging out catching bullpen sessions in Tacoma because they’d rather be careful with Moore and Bard.
Beloit 6 (MIN - 1), Clinton 8
RHP Erasmo Ramimrez (2.88) pitched five and two-thirds innings and had six runs score against him on eight hits, a hit batter, a walk, and four Ks. He had a 10/2 ground/fly in that span, so balls appeared to be finding holes. LHP Jose Jimenez (2.14, W) walked three and struck out one in the next two and a third innings, but came up with the win anyway as the Lumberkings rallied for three runs in the seventh. RHP Brandon Josselyn (3.41, S) gave up two hits in the ninth.
SS Gabriel Noriega (R, 2 CS, E, .225) had a hit and two walks, but ended up with a few miscues when he wasn’t at the plate. I don’t know how to quantify that in terms of steps forward and steps back. 2B Luis Nunez (2 SB, CS, .353), 3B Vinnie Catricala (2B, R, .286), 1B Tim Morris (2B, 2 R, .292), RF James Jones (2B, R, RBI, PO, .209), and LF Matt Cerione (2B, R, 2 RBI, .240) all had two hits, with Morris drawing a walk. DH Kalian Sams (HR, 2 RBI, .191) hit his fourteenth home run, but his slugging is probably under .500 now. It would be great if more of our home run hitters were good at doing things other than hit home runs.
Everett 4, Spokane 5 (TEX - 5)
I find it difficult when LHP Edlando Seco (4.32) comes up in the rotation, because I’ll admit, three Ks in three and two-thirds innings is somewhat interesting, but three runs (two earned) after three hits, a balk, two hit batters, and three walks is not. RHP Tyler Burgoon (0.00) scored one of those and had a hit and two Ks in the next inning and a third. The last three innings were split amongs RHP Willy Kesler (5.40, L), LHP Jason Markovitz (0.00), and RHP Stephen Pryor (0.00). Kesler gave up two runs after a hit and two walks, but two of those came opening the seventh, which meant Markvitz scored both as he had two hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and a K, also in a little over an inning. Pryor just had a K because he doesn’t need to do much else.
A lot of people might look at the end score and think that the Aquasox earlier win streak might just be a product of bad teams, but there was a good amount of fight in the team this evening, as three batters, CF Robbie Anston (HR, .269), 3B Kevin Mailloux (HR, .342), and RF Kevin Rivers (HR, A, E, .371) all had home runs spread throughout the game, Anston as one of two hits. It’s just a shame that they were all solo shots, and that the lineup managed to K fourteen times. 1B Evan Sharpley (2B, R, SB, .294) had two hits in the game, 2B Fred Bello (.125) walked twice, and DH Dwight Britton (2B, .200) doubled.
Burlington 10 (KC- 2), Pulaski 5
The Royals were teeing off against RHP Nolan Diaz (9.35, L), who gave up seven runs on eight hits (2 HR!), a walk, and two Ks in three and two-thirds innings. RHP Yao Wen Chang (8.53), on the other hand, wasn’t half bad, giving up a run on five hits (HR) and striking out eight in three and a third innings, though he did score one of Diaz’ runs. LHP Ryan Kiel (0.00) let an unearned run score on a hit, a wild pitch, and a K in the eighth, and then RHP Josh Krist (13.50) hit a batter and walked two, leading to a run in the ninth. Those two instances of plunked batters both involved the same player who hit two home runs off the M’s earlier in the game. Instant rivalry!
After a certain point, the game got past the threshold for a blowout and they just started playing anyone, anywhere they could to get some extra at-bats. One of the beneficiaries of that was 1B Ethan Paquette (E, .263), who used the opportunity to get two hits and a walk. 1B-3B Ramon Morla (3B, R, RBI, .522) and SS Jake Schlander (RBI, .278) also had two hits apiece, CF Mario Yepez (2B, 2 R, .167) had a double immediately after missing on a bunt single, and a walk as well, and RF James Wood (.500) had two walks in the game.
Peoria Mariners 0, AZL Dodgers 7
RHP Nolan Gallagher (5.40) got another start in and gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits (2 HR!), a walk, and two Ks this time. On the plus side, eleven grounders, one fly? RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (0.00) allowed a hit and struck out four in the next two innings before giving way to RHP Jarrett Attard (0.00), who struck out one in the ninth.
SS Danny Lopez (E, .350) and 2B Carlos Ramirez (.294) both had two hits batting 1-2 in the order. Choi was also in the lineup, and playing first, but it’s not my policy to highlight a walkand a hit by pitch.
VSL Reds 4, Aguirre Mariners 5 (seven innings)
Swept VSL doubleheader! I know you’re all stoked about this. RHP Daniel Mata (4.15) pitched four and two-thirds innings, with three runs (one earned) scoring after five hits, three walks, and a K. RHP Reynaldo Sabala (3.22, W) got the win and let two more score after two hits, a wild pitch, and four Ks in the last two and two-thirds.
SS Roberto Velasquez (2B, R, RBI, E, .333) and C Ricardo Gonzalez (R, 2 RBI, .188) both had a couple of hits in the game, and RF Jesus Ugueto (2B, R, E, .318), 1B Ivan Ramirez (2B, R, .349), and CF Rashynol Michel (2B, RBI, .317) all had doubles, with Ramirez drawing a walk. The game also marked the first start for Pedro Okuda, who debuted yesterday.
Aguirre Mariners 6, VSL Reds 1 (seven innings)
RHP Ivan Julio (1.17, W), like the guy who took the mound for the Reds, pitched the complete game in the second part of the DH, allowing a run on seven hits and four walks while striking out six. Hits aside, his opponent probably had the better start, but them’s the breaks.
SS-3B Ramon Coronel (3B, 3 R, .222), C Ivan Ramirez (2B, 2 RBI, .355), 1B Franklin Diaz (R, .286), and RF-CF Jesus Ugueto (SB, .333) all had two hits in the game.
