9:12 am PDT:

Everyone reasonably awake?  Good.  Refresh your memory with the list of guys not selected yesterday.  I'm thinking that Allie probably gets picked at some point in the second round here, probably before we come ot the plate.

As I was posting about things yesterday, a lot of people seemed upset with the organization for the Walker pick, presuming that the M's should have gone with more of a sure thing with #43.  This is a bit short-sighted, for a number of reasons.  One is that the likelihood of getting a guy who's going to make an impact and help your team immediately with the #43 pick is extremely low, particularly for a draft that's a little thin on frontline talent.  These kinds of players don't just drop out of the sky at this point.  Secondly, if the M's had gone after an Allie, or another high-end pick with that spot, they not only would have had to spend a lot of money on him to get him, they would have received no compensation if they had not.  It's not the kind of thing you want to lose particularly when you only have one pick in the first fifty.  Third off, look at the other teams around the M's and even in the first round and you're just not going to see a lot of teams going with extraordinary players.  Sure, you had the Cardinals tab Cox, the Tigers look at Castellanos, and the Red Sox looking at Renaudo and Brentz, but those were exceptions, not the rule.  No one had any idea about the kid that the Cubs drafted.  The M's benefited from a general hesitance on the part of all clubs, and few were being ambitious with their supplemental round picks.

Walker is not a bad player.  BA had him at 70 on their top 200.  There were other guys that they were looking at that would have been worse overdrafts, or bigger risks not to sign.

9:14 pm PDT:

Pirates tab Allie.  Told you he wasn't going to be around for long.

9:17 pm PDT:

With how ambitious teams are being right now with the second round, you wouldn't believe this is the same draft we were watching yesterday.

9:20 pm PDT:

Nitro.  High.  School.

9:24 pm PDT:

Yordy Cabrera should have been drafted by the Reds.

9:31 pm PDT:

M's draft Utah SS Marcus Littlewood, so Churchill's probably happy.

Littlewood has fantastic hands, but poor footwork and running speed and is projected to be a third baseman in the future.  He's a switch-hitter with power output that intrigues some and leaves others a bit cold.  Working on a USSM write-up.

9:43 pm PDT

Littlewood write-up.  Not much that I haven't said already there.  I thought the M's were going to take him at #43, which upset me, but at #67, I can get behind it.

9:52 pm PDT:

Some of the best players still around: RHP A.J. Cole, a Florida prep, LSU Catcher Micah Gibbs, and indy leaguer LHP James Paxton.

10:00 pm PDT:

Gibbs is gone.  Rays continue to draft from the NW.

10:03 pm PDT:

Ryne Stanek.  Not anticipated pick, but a great prep RHP.

10:14 pm PDT:

Stanek write-up.  Exciting.  Loving this draft so far.

10:27 pm PDT:

And still, no one is talking James Paxton.

10:33 pm PDT:

Garin Cecchini?  Jesse Hahn?  Anyone?

10:34 pm PDT:

PAXTON!  BEST DRAFT EVER!

10:43 pm PDT:

J-Pax.  I hate citing cliches, but this draft is melting my face.

10:48 pm PDT:

Garin Cecchini goes to the Red Sox and I wanted him bad.

10:55 pm PDT:

Jason Adam was a smart pick by the Royals right there.  I'm sure the M's are a little disappointed.

11:08 pm PDT:

Joc Pederson, I'm hearing.

11:12 pm PDT:

Stephen Pryor.  Not expected.  Big college RHP.

11:24 pm PDT:

I'm spread all over the place at the moment.  Here's a Pryor write-up.  I see him as a continuation of the Mark Lowe/Stephen Kahn tradition, a guy who could contribute to the bullpen three years from now, health willing.

11:52 pm PDT:

Didn't see this one coming, but we have a catcher.  Welcome Keanu Carmichael.

We just drafted a guy named Maguire Wiswall.

11:59 pm PDT:

Wizzle wozzle.  I like it.

12:02 pm PDT:

Pederson is probably off our board by now.  Too strong a college commitment, too far over slot.

12:10 pm PDT:

RF Jabari Blash, of the Virgin Islands.  What are you thinking?  Light rum, blue curacao, little something else?

12:16 pm PDT:

Woodinville, represent: RHP Luke Taylor.

12:27 pm PDT:

Luke Taylor.  M's just got a college RHP, Tyler Burgoon.  I wonder if he's a big goon.  (looks it up)  He isn't.

12:41 pm PDT:

The Goon.  i'll be hanging out here from now on, I think I've wrapped up at USSM.

12:49 pm PDT:

RHP Jon Keller out of Xaivier HS in Ohio.  Probably got lost in the shuffle, because the Buckeye State was high on talent this year.  Mechanics are a little inconsistent, but he throws high 80s and is another 6'5 ~200 lbs pitcher.  Could have some future potential.

12:58 pm PDT:

3B Stefen Romero from Oregon State.  He's a third baseman in the same sense Catricala was, and similarly hasa good eye and a little bit of power, probably not enough to get him to the big leagues.  Good pick for the twelfth round though.

1:11 pm PDT:

Off the board pick with LHP Jason Markovitz.  He's a Dirtbag, Cal State Long Beach.  Reliever solely this year, 34/15 K/BB in 27.2 innings, 22 hits.  Not exciting I guess.  He's thought of as a situational guy and has never started much in college.

1:20 pm PDT:

Another California left-hander, this time a prep one in Tyler Linehan of Sheldon HS in Sacramento.  He set and broke his school's strikeout record in consecutive years.  That was after he missed time with a knee injury.  He also has thrown both of the school's no-hitters.  He was a two-way player and could be good if focused on pitching.  I feel like I say this a lot.  Bonus points:  Sheldon's mascot is the Huskies, and they borrow the UW logo.

1:31 pm PDT:

M's go back to Hawaii for RHP Charles Kaalekahi.  Not a strong FB, maybe 84, good command though and known to be a good student.  He's commited to Hawaii.

1:43 pm PDT:

Prep LHP Jordan Shipers of Missouri.  Undersized lefty with average or better veocity and a good slider.  Delivery has a lot of effort in it, may end up as a reliever.  Very highly regarded otherwise.  Thought to be a strong commit to Missouri State.

1:55 pm PDT:

SS Danny Lopez, a four-year shortstop of U Pittsburgh.  He's your prototypical middle infielder, flashy glove, average hitter, except he draws walks.  His arm isn't great.

This just went official, but I'm going to be on The Locker Room on 1510 AM KGA Spokane at 5:15 pm or so tomorrow, broadcasting dulcet tones all over the radio waves, but mainly talking about the draft.

2:10 pm PDT:

First LaFromboise, then Hesketh, now Kessler.  We love the New Mexico Lobos.  Started 16 games for the Lobos, 96/25 K/BB in 101 innings, three complete games, one shutout.  Probably an org arm, for consumption of tasty innings.

2:20 pm PDT:

CF Frankie Christian of Upland HS in California.  Bit of an uppercut swing, left-handed, sort of looks like Eric Young.  He's a center fielder at present, speed and arm probably being his best tools.  I don't think he signs as he'll have a lot more opportunities coming out of college.  He's known to ave a strong commitment to USC.

2:31 pm PDT:

RHP Matthew Bischoff of Purdue. 95/14 K/BB in 95.0 innings.  As a senoior pick, you would expect him to be solid and an organization guy.

2:51 pm PDT:

The literary geek in me would have loved for the M's to have drafted Christopher Marlowe and not the Jays.

2:53 pm PDT:

C Luke Guarnaccia, prep Floridian.  Big backstop, switch-hitter with a bit of pop, known to operate on both sides of the battery and has logged a fair amount of time as a pitcher as well.

3:02 pm PDT:

The White Sox drafted Ozney Guillen.

3:03 pm PDT:

RHP Steven Landazuri of Carter HS in California.  Known commitment to Cal Baptist.  Plays the hot corner in addition to pitching.  86/20 K/BB in 62.0 innings, which isn't quite as impressive as him hitting over .400 I guess.  At this point, I would expect him to either be in the second or third tier of California, possessing a strong college commitment, or both.

3:14 pm PDT:

I think someone's kid just called a name out for the Brewers.

3:15 pm PDT:

We're back to selecting enormous pitchers.  This time, it's RHP Jandy Sena of Alabama, 6'6, 260 lbs.  He's also a left-handed hitting first baseman.  Pitched 25.0 innings for Marion Military Academy and ran a 25/13 K/BB.  Sixteen runs scored on him, four earned.  Yikes.

3:26 pm PDT:

Daniel Poncedeleon? The draft has something for everyone.

LHP Bennet Whitmore, Concordia U.  A redraft for us, from us, as we picked him in the 32nd round last year.  98/21 K/BB in 101.1 IP this past season.  Fifteen starts got him that far.  He's another senior innings eater if he signs.

3:37 pm PDT:

We've got five rounds left.  Even after the ten minute break, five rounds ago, I kind of feel like I'm about to pass out.

RHP Ernesto Zaragoza, another California pick.  At some point today, we're going to draft another position player.  At this rate, probably a catcher.  52/17 K/BB in 45.2 IP innings for Kaiser HS this year, 32/8 K/BB in 32.1 IP last year.  He's another two-way player, so if all else fails, we can just put 'em back on the field.  Right?

3:53 pm PDT:

CF Robert Anston,. Boston College.  He's a teammate of Wiswall.  A senior signing, he's got okay speed, but managed to be a good defender on instincts despite a below-average arm.  I'm thinking poor man's Johnny Damon.

4:02 pm PDT:

The Cubs picked Bryce Harper's brother.  Surely, that's on talent..

RHP Nick Fleece, Texas A & M.  Anyone who knew about Fleece was probably looking at Barret Loux at one point.  Fleece got five starts for the Aggies and was in the pen the rest of the time.  23/11 K/BB in 38.1 innings.  He was a two-way player as a prep in Texas and at one point was regarded as one of the state's better prospects, which is saying something.  He took a little while to get rolling in college and has been purely a pitcher for the last two seasons.

4:12 pm PDT:

Someone really needs to get the White Sox a better connection.

4:14 pm PDT:

RHP Tim Griffin. We will never see another non-catching position player again.

As a senior, Griffin made the NCAA Division II All-American Team.  Or the third team therein.  He was first team for the South Region.  94/23 K/BB in 101 innings, and managed to limit the hits a bit better than some of the other guys I've talked about recently, as he had only eighty-seven.

4:25 pm PDT:

I was mistaken.  1B Jonathan McGibbon, prep from NY.  McGibbon is also a football star, but the letter of intent he signed for Clemson was in fact for a baseball scholarship.  I'm lacking '10 numbers for him, or '09 stats, so here's an interview.  Don't expect him to sign either.

4:38 pm PDT:

SS Derek Poppert, University of San Francisco.  .308/.373/.458 for the Dons this past season.  Another senior signing that they apparently didn't want to risk as a NDFA.  I imagine we might see a lot of those on hitters.  He doesn't strike out much and possesses decent footspeed, 11 for 16 on stolen base attempts this season.

That's it for the day.  I think I'm going to take a nap now.  Special thanks to my laptop  for not crapping out on me today even though it really hates the internet a lot of the time.
