LHP Luke French (1.41, PO, W) had about the oddest start I’ve seen in recent memory. What do you think ten hits, two wild pitches, five walks, and two Ks will get you over seven innings? Try one run. One. By contrast, RHP Mike Koplove (9.45) let a run score on three hits, a wild pitch, and a walk in just a third of an inning. In the final inning and two-thirds, RHP Levale Speigner (4.72, S) struck out one.
The offense wasn’t quite as interesting, but not bad by any stretch. 2B Josh Wilson (2B, .329), DH Jack Hannahan (2B, R, RBI, .235), 1B Mike Carp (2B, RBI, .242), RF-1B Brad Nelson 92B, R, .286), and LF-RF Ryan Langerhans (2B, R, RBI, .282) all had doubles, Hannahan and Langerhans both as one of two hits, though Hannahan would walk as well. It kind of gives one ideas doesn’t it? CF Michael Saunders (R, .138) added a single and a walk, which I think is the first time I have mentioned him in a positive light this season, and I hope to do so many more times.
Game three of the set between Montgomery and West Tenn was postponed due to flash floods, tornados, and other forms of severe weather. If the town is not wiped off the face of the earth by an unsympathetic nature, they will play one game tomorrow and then a doubleheader on Monday morning.
Rancho Cucamonga 8 (ANA 0), High Desert 6
Oh boy. RHP Andrew Carraway (6.16) let three runs score on six hits, a hit batter, a walk, and three Ks over five innings. LHP Travis Mortimore (7.90) pitched the next inning+, giving up two runs on a hit, a walk, and two Ks. Just when it seemed like he was starting to get back on track… RHP Blake Nation (2.87, BS) scored one of those, and run of his own on two hits and three Ks in two innings of work. The Mavs survived that much and were ready to come back to at least tie it, but the final two runs allowed by RHP Cheyne Hann (2.65, L) provided a couple nails for the coffin, coming on two hits, a walk, and a K in the final two innings.
3B Nate Tenbrink (2 R, RBI, SB, .384) had a single and three walks, as though following up on my earlier comments that he might not be walking enough. RF Johermyn Chavez (3B, .289) was on three times, with a triple and two walks. The twos were pretty interesting as well, with 2B Edilio Colina (R, .309) and DH Rich Poythress (RBI, .310) comprising the hit and walk combos, and LF-CF Denny Almonte (HR, 3 RBI, E, .253) and SS Juan Diaz (.244) representing the two hits. Not to be overlooked, PH-2B Kyle Seager (2B, R, .329) came in late and had a double.
Clinton 2, Peoria 3 (CHC + 7)
LHP Anthony Vasquez (0.94) pitched seven innings this time out, allowing two unearned runs to score on six hits, a hit batter, and five Ks, while running a 11/1 ground/fly. Hardly infinite, but one would think he’s first in line if someone’s needed out west. LHP Brian Moran (0.75, L) pitched the eighth and his first run of the year, coming on two hits, was enough to do the Lumberkings in.
CF Daniel Carroll (RBI, CS, .258) had three hits from the leadoff spot, though I guess I like it better that 3B Mario Martinez (HR, 2 R, .195) had a home run and a walk. First home run, and a rare walk in his case.
