Tacoma 4, Nashville 0 (MIL + 8)
RHP Steven Shell (1.62, W) shut down a legitimate team, holding the Sounds to four hits and a walk against six Ks. That’s the whole nine innings right there. Quality stuff. I’m not entirely sure how far Shell has come this season, but this is a big step in the right direction.
2B Chris Woodwad (R, .274) and C Josh Bard (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .250) both had two hits, though those hits were pretty different on distance. It was Bard’s second home run, but he wasn’t alone, as 1B Mike Carp (HR, 2 RBI, .193) had one too, his fifth. Odd to recognize considering I had the perception he was doing pretty much nothing at the plate for a long time. LF Brad Nelson (CS, .308) walked twice and was caught stealing. Why he was running, I don’t know.
Mobile 3 (ARI + 1), West Tenn 4
Hey we didn’t get killed this time. RHP Dan Cortes (5.09, W) pitched six innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits (HR), a pair of wild pitches, and four walks against four Ks. Seriously. Four walks. His 4-1 record aside, I think that relief is inevitable at the current rate. RHP Josh Fields (2.89, S) got the final three innings and the save with a hit, a walk, and a K in that span.
CF Kuo-hui Lo (R, RBI, SB, .250), down at fifth, and DH Dustin Ackley (2 2B, .200) at sixth both had two hits. C Jose Yepez (2B, 2 RBI, .333) had the only other extra-base hit.
High Desert 1, Bakersfield 2 (TEX + 1)
I don’t know how to respond to low-scoring games in the Cal League. At least all the scoring was derived from solo home runs. RHP Andrew Carraway (4.45, L) was not the beneficiary of that, as he gave up two solo shots along with four other hits, a hit batter, a walk, and four Ks in seven innings. That’s his second walk of the year. RHP Steven Richard (4.91) allowed two hits and struck out one in the eighth.
LF Nate Tenbrink (HR, .387) was the one with the home run, his fifth. Good stuff there. C Trevor Coleman (2B, .208) had two hits batting ninth, which is decent considering how much he’s struggled offensively to start the year.
Clinton 5, Peoria 4 (CHC + 4)
It’s kind of neat to sweep a series from one of the better teams in the league. RHP Taylor Stanton (4.09, PO, W) picked up his third win after allowing three runs (two earned) to score on four hits (HR), a walk, and five Ks in five innings. RHP Chris Kirkland (0.43, PO) pitched the next three innings, walking one and striking out three. In the ninth, RHP Brandon Josselyn (3.68, S) let a run score on three hits and a K, which is a little closer than I’d like, but whatever. Lumberkings come out on top.
RF James Jones (2 R, .195) did the most damage, and was the only real notable with his three hits and a walk in the game. Boy it would be nice if he turned things around.
