Tacoma 4, Nashville 3 (MIL + 8)
RHP David Pauley (3.27) gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits, two walks, and five Ks in seven innings, which is pretty solid. RHP Brian Sweeney (1.84, W) and RHP Chad Cordero (4.91, S) had identical lines of one inning pitched, two Ks over the last two frames.
The win can be attributed directly to 1B Mike Carp (HR, 2 RBI, .197) hitting a two-run shot in the ninth, followed by a solo blast from 3B Matt Mangini (HR, E, .281) an out later. C Eliezer Alfonzo (2B, R, .258) and 2B Ramon Vazquez (RBI, .227) both had two hits.
Mobile 3 (ARI - 1), West Tenn 4
When people ask me about LHP Mauricio Robles (3.03, E), I always feel as though I have to be measured in my responses, in a “yes, he’s good, but…” sort of way. This was such an outing. Through five and two-thirds innings, he let a run score on five hits and struck out eight. The “but”, which is hardly minor, is that he walked six. He didn’t suffer any from it, but yeah, not good. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2.28) was just plain unlucky, having two runs score against him on two hits and two walks in three innings, and then RHP Aaron Jensen (5.12, W) came on for the final out, and won with the walk-off.
The way the final run scored was a little dumb. First Liddi was hit by a pitch, and ordinarily you’d think “oh, he must have come around to score, instant karma”, except Ackley grounded into a DP. Yepez then walked, and RF Joe Dunigan (2 2B, R, RBI, .194) doubled to move him to third, and SS Carlos Triunfel (2B, R, .289) managed to reach on a throwing error by the shortstop, during which time Yepez scored. DH Guillermo Quiroz (RBI, .346) had two singles and LF Carlos Peguero (RBI, .339) had a hit and a walk. The corresponding move to Mike Wilson going to Tacoma was apparently Quiroz leaving the DL.
Stockton 9 (OAK - 6), High Desert 10 (eleven innings)
I’m pleading ignorance on the Mavericks rotation for a while, because LHP Ryan Feierabend (3.52, PO) did get the start, it just didn’t go well for him because he gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, two walks, and two Ks in four and a third innings. RHP Ryan Moorer (3.21) didn’t do well either, giving up three runs on three hits (HR) and a walk against one K. Good pitching news to come out of this was that RHP Maikel Cleto (1.69) came off the DL and promptly struck out four and induced two groundballs. I LIKE HIM! RHP Marwin Vega (4.85) had a hit, a walk, and a K in the next inning, and then as it went to extras, RHP Steven Richard (4.32) had the same line as Cleto. This will probably be the closest I come to comparing the two outside of mentioning they throw with the same hand.
The bottom of the eleventh involved C Travis Scott (2B, 1-6, .250) doubling and moving on to third on a wild pitch before RF-CF Johermyn Chavez (2B, 2 R, 2-6, .285) struck out swinging. The pitcher intentionally walked Shaffer to set up the DP, but then 1B Scott Savastano (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, 1-4, BB, .291) hit the sac fly and that was the game. All of this ignores the fact that SS Juan Diaz (2 HR, 5 RBI, E, 4-5, .282) was seriously on fire tonight, hitting his second and third home runs of the season. May seems to have brought his bat back to life, like so many others, so any time they want to promote one of the double play duo up there in West Tenn, I’d say he’s ready. The same might be said of 2B Kyle Seager (R, .304), who was 3-for-6. 3B Edilio Colina (2B, E, .307) doubled, DH Rich Poythress (.267) had a single and two walks, and LF-RF Nate Tenbrink (R, RBI, .384) had a single and one walk. I think that covers all the starters.
Some bookkeeping stuff on the Mavericks' end... so Cleto's off the DL. The corresponding move to that was Maximo Mendez going on it. Now, you might think, doesn't that leave them down an outfielder, except you'll somewhat mysteriously see Luis Nunez, a career infielder, playing center for them in today's box. He was added when Travis Mortimore was released. I feel bad for Mortimore because when your career is mostly pitching in High Desert, that's pretty awful.
Cedar Rapids 5 (ANA + 6), Clinton 1 (seven innings)
This seems like a start gone to waste for LHP Jonathan Hesketh (6.82, L), who had four runs (two earned) score against him on six hits, one walk, and nine Ks in five+ innings. Partially, this is because RHP Daniel Cooper (4.41) scored two of those and one of his own on two hits and a K in the final two innings.
It’s not like the offense was doing anything though. 1B Vinnie Catricala (.278) walked twice and that was about it.
Cedar Rapids 1 (+ 5), Clinton 5 (seven innings)
Turnabout is kind of awesome though. LHP James Gilheeney (2.72, W) gave up a run on four hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against six Ks in six innings, to which I’ll say “yay, only two walks!” LHP Brian Moran (2.08) had an uneventful seventh.
The big thing to happen for the offense was LF Kalian Sams (HR, 4 RBI, .193) hitting out his ninth. Despite hitting under .200, Sams is slugging well over .500 and over 75% of his hits are going for extras. That’s why he’s my favorite. DH Vinnie Catricala (2B, RBI, .279) added a double and 3B Mario Martinez (R, .221) had a single and a walk.
