That’s two Ls in a row after a six-game win streak. LHP Mauricio Robles (3.05) gave up two runs on five hits (HR), four walks, and three Ks in five and two-thirds innings. So yeah, he’ll be great when that command gets straightened out. Any time now. RHP Anthony Varvaro (3.63, BS) let two runs (one earned) score on three hits (HR) and three Ks in the next inning and a third, and then RHP Josh Fields (4.29) let a run score on a hit, a wild pitch, and two walks in the eighth. Yup, any time now. RHP Wes Littleton (7.88, L) gave up the winning run on two hits, two walks, and a K in two-thirds of the ninth inning.
So this was a little soul-crushing because the D-Jaxx came back to tie it in the ninth. 1B Scott Savastano (SB, 2-3, BB, .500) singled, and then LF Carlos Peguero (2 R, 3-5, .333) grounded into a force out, which might have been a DP, except on the relay the second baseman threw it away and Peguero made it in to second. Then Triunfel singled to drive Peguero home, but after that, he was picked off and Liddi struck out. It was Triunfel's second pickoff of the game, and he also made an error earlier. But hey, the tying RBI would have redeemed him a bit. If it had gone on any longer, DH Johan Limonta (HR, 3 RBI, .314) would have come up, and he had himself a good night, hitting a three-run shot in the first and drawing a walk. CF Kuo-hui Lo (R, .240) also had a hit and a walk and RF Joe Dunigan (2B, RBI, CS, .194) doubled. There was still no Jack Wilson.
Inland Empire 18 (LA - 15), High Desert 3
You would not think that the Sixers were one of the worst teams in the league today. LHP Ryan Feierabend (5.31, 2 PO, L) gave up six runs on nine hits (2 HR!) and three Ks in five innings. The fun continued as LHP Nick Czyz (4.79) came on in relief for two innings and gave up three runs on four hits, a wild pitch, three walks, and two Ks. Travis Scott was not pleased with this development and got himself ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the middle of it. RHP Blake Nation (4.01) had three more score on four hits (HR) in the eighth. As RHP Ryan Moorer (7.07) opened the ninth, he faced seven batters without an out, allowing five hits and two walks, which came around as six runs, because RHP Marwin Vega (4.50) managed to strand one, despite a hit and a walk against two Ks, while pitching the ninth.
C Travis Scott (HR, 3 RBI, E, .279) was as much in support of his pitchers at the plate as behind it, collecting two hits including his fourth home run. LF Nate Tenbrink (R, .375) added two walks and 1B Rich Poythress (.268) had a single and a walk.
Clinton 1, Burlington 4 (KC - 11)
Reversals! LHP James Gilheeney (2.34, PO) let an unearned run score on six hits, a walk, and four Ks in seven innings, which isn’t bad at all. Unfortunately, RHP Daniel Cooper (5.71, L) let three runs score on two hits (HR) and a walk in the eighth and that about did it.
RF James Jones (HR, .213) had a home run and a walk batting second, continuing his hot hitting of the past week or so. 3B Hawkins Gebbers (2B, E, .400) doubled in the seventh. Oh, how I have missed typing the name Hawkins Gebbers. I’m sure Brewster, WA is also appreciative. On a somewhat depressing note, Steve Baron popped into a double play to shortstop that caught Daniel Carroll straying a bit from first. Bummer.
