A bit bland. RHP Steven Shell (2.66) gave up a run on four hits, a walk, and three Ks in seven innings, then in the final two, RHP Andy Baldwin (4.32, L) let two runs plate on four hits, two walks, and a K. At least they got grounders?
SS Josh Wilson (2 2B, R, .333) and CF Michael Saunders (2B, SB, .159) both had two hits in the game and one of these notes is more exciting than the other. RF Brad Nelson (E, .292) and 2B Chris Woodward (.292) both had a single and a walk, and are perhaps equally exciting in this case, which is to say, not a whole lot but I’ll take it. The team was 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position. This is bad.
Jackson, TN had as much weather on Sunday as they did on Saturday. Perhaps they’ll still play the DH on Monday? I think they should probably tend to other priorities first, being in a state of emergency and all.
Rancho Cucamonga 7 (ANA + 1), High Desert 6
I fear bullpen days now. LHP Ryan Feierabend (0.00) got another one of his highly irregular starts and gave up four hits while striking out one in three innings of work. After him, things did not work ut so well. LHP Nick Czyz (4.00) let two runs score on three hits, two walks, and a K over the next two frames, RHP Marwin Vega (3.48, L) let three runs (two earned) score on three hits (HR) and a K taking it through the seventh, and RHP Steven Penney (2.19) had two more runs against him in the final two on four hits and two Ks.
What makes all this nonsense particularly frustrating is that the Mavs had some fight in them, and rallied for four runs in their half of the ninth before getting shut down, in each case with one of the better hitters on the roster not holding up their end. For the highlights, I’d note both DH Scott Savastano (2B, R, RBI, .291) and 3B Nate Tenbrink (R, RBI, CS, .396) for getting three hits apiece, Savastano adding a walk, and contributing to that particular rally, but would frown a bit on 1B Rich Poythress (2 RBI, .315), who recorded the final groundout, as well as Seager, who rarely strikes out, but did just before Savastano and Tenbrink came to the plate. A couple of runners caught stealing over the course of the game didn’t help either. It’s all rather sad, in the same way a Mariners game is sad.
Clinton 4, Peoria 3 (CHC + 6)
Consider this to be a pleasant surprise, because the Chiefs are a good team and RHP Tyler Blandford (4.50, 2 E, PO) was not a good pitcher, giving up three runs on seven hits (HR), a wild pitch, a balk, and three walks without striking out anyone in four and two-thirds innings. RHP Daniel Cooper (5.56) struck out one over the next two and a third innings and managed to strand both runners he inherited, which isn’t saying a whole lot but every little bit counts. LHP Jose Jimenez (1.64) had a hit and two walks against him in the next inning and a third before RHP Brandon Josselyn (3.86, S) came back for his second save by striking out one in the final two-thirds.
Playing on the road, the Lumberkings couldn’t walk-off with it, but they did the next best thing, which is bookend the ninth inning with home runs, one by 3B Mario Martinez (HR, .210), hitting his second in as many days, and the other by PR-RF Vinnie Catricala (HR, .261), who wasn’t even starting this one. SS Nick Frankin (2B, R, RBI, .319) added two more hits, which is hardly unusual for him at this point, and CF Matt Cerione (3B, R, A, .176) and LF Kalian Sams (RBI, .212) both had a hit and a walk.
